How do I connect the Faderfox UC44 controller?

Connect the controller with the included USB cable to your computer before you start your application.

The controller will be recognized by the computer as ‘Faderfox UC44’ or ‘USB audio device’.

How can I power the Faderfox UC44?

You can power the unit via the USB connection to your computer.

If you want to control your MIDI gear only (without a computer), use a USB power adapter (5V min 300mA).

You can also use any kind of USB hub to power the unit.

How do I select a setup on the UC44?

1. Enter setup mode: Press the blue setup key while holding down the red shift key. The yellow setup LED will blink.

2. Select the setup: Turn encoder 1.

3. Leave setup mode: Press the blue setup key while holding down the red shift key again. The yellow setup LED will turn off.

How does the UC44 work as a generic MIDI controller?

Setups 01 to 07 are preconfigured to use the unit as a generic controller.

In these setups, all controls send standard CC (Control Change) commands with 7-bit resolution.

Setups 1 to 6 work on 2 MIDI channels (refer to the chapter on factory reset for specifics).

Setup 7 works on 16 MIDI channels, corresponding to the fader/button/group numbers (e.g., fader/button/group 01 = MIDI channel 01, fader/button/group 02 = MIDI channel 02, and so on).

How do I set up the Faderfox UC44 for use with Ableton Live?

1. Decompress the control surface setup file (UC44.ZIP) from the included CD.

2. Copy the included folder (containing the script files) into Ableton Live’s MIDI remote script folder:

* On Windows: `\Program\Ableton\Live x.x.x\Resources\MIDI Remote Scripts`

* On OSX: Navigate to `/Ableton/Live.app`, right-click, select “show package contents”, then go to `contents/app-resources/MIDI Remote Scripts`.

3. Check the content of the copied folder; it must contain at least 11 files of type PY.

4. In Ableton Live’s preferences under the MIDI Sync tab:

* Select ‘UC44’ as the Control Surface.

* Select ‘Faderfox UC44’ for both the MIDI Input and Output ports associated with the UC44 control surface.

How do I control Ableton Live using setup 08 on the UC44?

Use setup 08 on the UC44 to control tracks 1-16 in Ableton Live. The controls function as follows:

Encoders:

* Assignments follow the front panel labeling in the upper two rows.

* Upper row controls 1st functions: rack macros, sends, and scene select.

* Lower row controls 2nd functions: tempo, quantization, cue, pan, master, and scene select.

* Encoders are automapped only to parameters within Ableton Live’s Rack devices. For other devices, you must either place them inside a Rack device or manually map the parameters.

Faders: Control the track volumes.

Gray Buttons: Select the tracks.

Green Button: Launch clips (1st function) or activate/deactivate tracks (2nd function).

Function Switching: Switch between the 1st and 2nd functions for the encoders and green buttons using the black and blue keys.

Can I manually map controls in Ableton Live with the UC44?

Yes, manual mappings of all controls are possible in Ableton Live. These manual mappings will override the default instant mappings provided by the script (especially relevant for setup 08).

What modes are recommended for the encoders when using Ableton Live?

It is preferable to use absolute mode for the encoders. This ensures that the values are displayed immediately in Ableton Live, rather than using relative mode where the software value only changes when the hardware control moves.

For manual mappings to sensitive parameters like resonating filters, use the high resolution mode. To enable this, select the MIDI mode ‘Absolute (14bit)’ in Live’s bottom row status bar area for the specific mapping. This helps to avoid audible stepping or control noises.
