How should I handle the speakers during unboxing?

Unbox the speakers carefully to avoid physically damaging them.

What kind of speaker wire should I use and how do I choose the gauge?

For optimal results, use multi-stranded wire specifically designed for amplifier-to-speaker connections. The gauge (thickness) of the wire significantly affects performance, especially over longer distances. Consider the length of the wire run to each speaker. Longer runs require larger gauge (smaller number) wire to maintain performance and minimize signal loss. Use the following table as a guide:

WIRE GAUGE CHART
WIRE GAUGE DISTANCE
18 Gauge Up to 100 feet (30 meters)
16 Gauge Up to 150 feet (45 meters)
14 Gauge Up to 250 feet (80 meters)
12 Gauge Up to 400 feet (122 meters)
10 Gauge Up to 650 feet (198 meters)

How do I prepare the speaker wires for connection?

Strip off approximately ½” (12mm) of the insulation from the ends of the speaker cable. Twist the bare strands tightly together.

How do I connect the speaker wires correctly?

Follow these steps and precautions:
  • Ensure your amplifier or receiver equipment is turned off before connecting speakers.
  • Make sure wire polarity is connected correctly. Most speaker cables are coded (e.g., color, stripe) for ease of use. Connect the positive (red) terminal on the amplifier to the positive terminal on the speaker.
  • Follow the same procedure for the negative side, connecting the negative terminal on the amplifier to the negative terminal on the speaker.
  • Insert the twisted bare strands of the prepared wire ends into the Euroblock connector provided.
  • After connecting, check carefully to ensure that the positive and negative wires (or strands) are not touching each other at the speaker terminals or the amplifier terminals, as this could cause a short circuit.

Where should I place the speakers for the best sound?

For the best sound performance, place the speakers at ear level, facing the listener. If the speakers must be mounted above or below ear level, pivot them up or down using the mounting bracket to direct the sound toward the listener.

Can the speakers be mounted horizontally or vertically?

Yes, the speakers can be oriented horizontally or vertically without any impact on sound quality, giving you flexibility in how you install them. The logo on the grille is rotatable to match the orientation.

What are the requirements for the mounting surface?

The mounting bracket must be attached to a structurally sound surface that can safely support the weight of the speaker and withstand vibrations during operation.

What type and size of screws should I use for mounting the bracket?

Always use two screw points for mounting the bracket. Recommended screw sizes are:
  • #14 to #20 diameter screws with a length of 2 inches.
  • M6 to M8 diameter screws with a length of 50mm.
The appropriate type of screw (e.g., wood screw, machine screw with anchor) depends on the mounting surface material.

How should I mount the bracket on different wall surfaces?

  • For drywall or plasterboard: Secure the bracket directly to a wall joist or stud for adequate support. Do not mount only to the drywall sheet itself.
  • For brick or concrete: Use appropriate wall plugs or concrete anchors designed for the weight of the speaker to ensure stability.

Is there an additional safety measure for mounting?

Yes, for additional security, attach a suitable safety cable (not included) to the U-bolt located on the back of the speaker and secure the other end to a solid structural point.

How do I adjust the speaker’s angle after mounting?

You can rotate the speaker within the bracket to direct the sound towards the listeners.
  1. Loosen the side bolts on the speaker/bracket assembly using the provided Allen key.
  2. Rotate the speaker to the desired position (horizontally or vertically).
  3. Securely lock the side bolts back in place to fix the speaker’s position.

How do I route the speaker wire into the speaker enclosure?

Route the speaker wire through the wire grommet located on the rear cover plate. After passing the wire through, tighten the grommet nut to create a weather-resistant seal around the cable.

How do the shoulder mount and bracket attach to the speaker?

The included shoulder mount fits between the speaker cabinet and the mounting bracket arm. Insert the mounting screw (1/4″ bolt) through the bracket arm, then through the shoulder mount, and screw it into the threaded insert on the speaker cabinet. The shoulder mount has markings in 15-degree increments, which can help facilitate the precise alignment of multiple speakers.

How can I remove the speaker grille?

To gain access to the front of the speaker (drivers and port plugs), remove the grille locking screw located on the top and bottom edges of the speaker cabinet. Once the screws are removed, the grille can be carefully detached.

How do I switch between sealed and vented (ported) operation?

These speakers feature a versatile design allowing for either sealed or ported operation. They come configured as sealed units. To change to a ported configuration for potentially enhanced bass performance, first remove the speaker grille. Then, remove the removable port plugs located on the front baffle. The ported configuration should typically only be used when weather conditions permit, as the open ports can reduce the speaker’s resistance to water ingress compared to the sealed configuration. Remember to reinstall the port plugs if the speaker will be exposed to harsh weather.

Where are the 70/100 Volt tap settings located?

The tap settings selector switch for 70V/100V operation (and Low-Z/8-Ohm bypass) is located behind the rear cover plate, near the wire input terminal/grommet.

How do I adjust the 70/100 Volt tap setting?

The 70/100-Volt tap allows you to adjust the power level for your speaker when used in distributed audio systems. To adjust it:
  1. Remove the rear cover plate to access the selector switch.
  2. Rotate the dial switch to the wattage setting appropriate for your system’s design and power requirements.
  3. Available wattage options are marked on the dial (e.g., for OD-M61T 70V: 3.8W, 7.5W, 15W, 30W; 100V: 7.5W, 15W, 30W. For OD-M81T 70V: 7.5W, 15W, 30W, 60W; 100V: 15W, 30W, 60W). There is also a Low-Z (8 Ohm) setting.
  4. Reinstall the rear cover plate.
Make sure to select the correct voltage (70V or 100V) based on your amplifier type and system design.

How do I set the wattage taps correctly in a 70/100V system?

When configuring a 70V or 100V distributed audio system, it’s crucial that the total power draw of all connected speakers does not exceed the amplifier’s power rating. Follow these steps:
  1. Determine the amplifier’s maximum power output rating for the voltage being used (e.g., 120W, 250W at 70V).
  2. Decide on the desired wattage setting (tap) for each speaker in the system based on required sound levels for different zones or areas.
  3. Add up the wattage settings (taps) of all speakers connected to the amplifier channel. For example, if you have four speakers set to the 20W tap each, the total load is 4 x 20W = 80W.
  4. Ensure that this total combined wattage load does not exceed the amplifier’s maximum power rating.
  5. To prevent overloading and potential damage or shutdown, it is strongly recommended to leave a safety margin, typically 10-20%, below the amplifier’s maximum power. For example, if using a 120W amplifier, keep the total connected speaker load below approximately 100W to 110W.
  6. Adjust individual speaker tap settings as needed to meet the desired sound levels while staying within the amplifier’s safe operating limits.
