To properly store your DRUM PLUTO 4 pump, please follow these steps:

1. Store in a dry and heated building.

2. Handle carefully and keep ports plugged to prevent ingress of dirt.

3. Rotate the pump shaft occasionally to prevent seals from sticking.

The DRUM PLUTO 4 pump is built with fine clearances. It is essential that a fine mesh filter is fitted on the suction side of the pump to prevent damage from foreign bodies entering the pump. If a reverse flow valve is fitted, a filter is also required on the other side of the pump.

The DRUM PLUTO 4 pump should be mounted with its shaft as near to a horizontal plane as possible. However, it can be inverted or side-mounted if required. In such cases, it must be supported by both sets of feet.

The angle and length of the propshaft must be kept to an absolute minimum. If this cannot be avoided, the propshaft should be balanced. The maximum angle of the propshaft under any conditions is approximately 12 degrees.

The centre line of the power take-off shaft must be parallel with the centre line of the DRUM PLUTO 4 pump.

When bolting the pipework to the pump (or its reverse flow valve), care should be taken to prevent distortion of the body by misalignment. If a reverse flow valve is fitted, adequate support should be given to it.

Should water enter the DRUM PLUTO 4 pump, oil should be flushed through it immediately to prevent rusting.

The length of the suction pipe should be kept to an absolute minimum, and its bore should be as large as the pump branches. The delivery pipework and hose should ideally be the same bore as the pump branches. To ensure full output from this high-capacity pump, it is recommended that the pump is mounted on the trailer portion of articulated road tankers to achieve good suction conditions.

Ensure that the relief valve and spring are fitted in the suction side of the DRUM PLUTO 4 pump. See the “PUMP ROTATION – FLOW DIRECTION” diagram for orientations of different drive options and refer to Service Instructions for details on how to interchange the relief valve and blanking plate.

The standard relief valve setting is 85psi (6Kp/cm²). Alternative spring settings are available on request. The DRUM PLUTO 4 is fitted with a 2-stage relief valve as standard, which causes the pressure to drop by approximately 25psi (1.75Kp/cm²) when on full bypass, thereby reducing hose pressure and horsepower absorbed.

The DRUM PLUTO 4 pump has an internal bearing design and therefore must not be used to handle corrosive or abrasive products.

The DRUM PLUTO 4 pump is suitable for handling viscosities up to 10,000 seconds RI (2,500 c.St.). For products with higher viscosities, please contact Drum.

You must thoroughly flush out the DRUM PLUTO 4 pump under pressure after discharging liquids with thermo-setting properties. Failure to do so can cause serious damage when the pump is next started.

When handling viscous products using a DRUM PLUTO 4 with a reverse flow valve, start with the valve in the neutral position. Then, gradually move the handle to increase the flow. This procedure will reduce the stock load on the drive system.

If the reverse flow valve on your DRUM PLUTO 4 is used infrequently, rotate it once a day to prevent sticking.

For the optimum discharge rate, start with a slow drive speed and gradually increase it until the pump starts to become noisy. Then, reduce the speed slightly until the noise disappears.

To clear the pump lines, increase the speed or pump just prior to the compartment becoming empty. Revving the DRUM PLUTO 4 pump after it starts to pull air will not clear the lines. Do not run the pump at this elevated speed for more than approximately 60 seconds.

Please observe the following restrictions when operating your DRUM PLUTO 4:

1. Do not run the pump dry.

2. This pump must not be run on full bypass for more than 3 minutes.

No routine maintenance is required for the DRUM PLUTO 4. The product being pumped lubricates the bearings and synchronising gears.

Should the DRUM PLUTO 4 pump become noisy during normal operation, it is essential that it is immediately removed from service and the reasons are investigated. It is essential the pump is not stripped or even partially stripped as this will invalidate the warranty.
