To insert the batteries into the remote control for your DENON AVR-X4000, follow these steps:

1. Slide the rear cover off the remote control unit in the direction of the arrow.

2. Load the two R6/AA batteries properly as indicated by the ⊕ and ⊖ marks in the battery compartment.

3. Put the rear cover back on.

NOTE:

• When inserting the batteries, be sure to do so in the proper direction, following the ⊕ and ⊖ marks in the battery compartment.

• To prevent damage or leakage of battery fluid:

– Do not use a new battery together with an old one.

– Do not use two different types of batteries.

– Remove the batteries from the remote control unit if it will not be in use for long periods.

– If the battery fluid should leak, carefully wipe the fluid off the inside of the battery compartment and insert new batteries.

The front panel of your DENON AVR-X4000 has the following controls:

Power operation button (X): This turns the power of the MAIN ZONE on/off (standby).

Power indicator: This lights up to indicate the power status:

• Power on: Green

• Normal standby: Off

• When “HDMI Pass Through” or “HDMI Control” is set to “On”: Red

• When “IP Control” is set to “Always On”: Red

Door: Press the bottom of the door to open it, revealing more buttons and connectors. Close it when not in use.

MASTER VOLUME knob: This adjusts the volume level.

Display: This displays various pieces of information.

Remote control sensor: This receives signals from the remote control unit.

SOURCE SELECT knob: This selects the input source.

Behind the door on the front panel of your DENON AVR-X4000, you will find the following buttons and connectors:

• AUX1 HDMI 7 connector: Used to connect HDMI output compatible devices such as video cameras and game consoles.

• USB port: Used to connect USB storage devices and the USB cable for an iPod.

• Headphones jack (PHONES): When headphones are plugged in, audio will no longer be output from the connected speakers.

• BACK button: This returns to the previous screen in the menu.

• ENTER button: This confirms a selection in the menu.

• SETUP button: This displays the menu on the TV screen.

• AUX1 INPUT connector: Used to connect analog output compatible devices such as video cameras and game consoles.

• SETUP MIC jack: Used to connect the supplied Setup and measurement microphone for speaker calibration.

• QUICK SELECT buttons: With a single press, you can call up various registered settings such as input source, volume level, and sound mode.

• DIMMER button: Each press switches the brightness of the display.

• OPTION button: This displays the option menu on the TV screen.

• Cursor buttons (△▽◁▷): These select items in the menu.

• Information button (INFO): This displays status information on the TV screen.

• STATUS button: Each press switches the status information that is shown on the display.

• ZONE3 SOURCE button: This selects the input source for ZONE3.

• ZONE3 ON/OFF button: This turns the power of ZONE3 on/off.

• ZONE2 SOURCE button: This selects the input source for ZONE2.

• ZONE2 ON/OFF button: This turns the power of ZONE2 on/off.

The display on your DENON AVR-X4000 provides information through various indicators:

• Information display: Shows the input source name, sound mode, setting values, and other information.

• Front speaker indicator: Lights according to the setting of the front A and B speakers.

• Input/output signal channel indicators: Displays the channel for input/output signals. It can be set to show either the input channels or the output channels from the speakers.

• Master volume indicator: Shows the current volume level.

• MUTE indicator: Lights when the audio mute mode is selected.

• Sleep timer indicator: Lights when the sleep mode is selected.

• MULTI ZONE indicator: Lights up when ZONE2 or ZONE3 power is turned on.

• Monitor output indicator: Lights according to the HDMI monitor output setting.

• Tuner reception mode indicators:

– STEREO: In FM mode, this lights up when receiving stereo broadcasts.

– TUNED: Lights up when the broadcast is properly tuned in.

– RDS: Lights up when receiving RDS broadcasts.

• Audyssey® indicator: Lights when “MultEQ® XT32”, “Dynamic EQ”, “Dynamic Volume”, “Audyssey LFC™”, or “Audyssey DSX®” settings are active.

• Decoder indicator: Lights when Dolby or DTS signals are being input or decoded.

• Input signal indicators: The respective indicator will light corresponding to the input signal (e.g., HDMI, DIGITAL, ANALOG).

To connect the speaker cables to your DENON AVR-X4000, follow these steps. Be sure to check the left (L) and right (R) channels and the + (red) and – (black) polarities.

1. Peel off about 10 mm of sheathing from the tip of the speaker cable, then either twist the core wire tightly or terminate it.

2. Turn the speaker terminal counterclockwise to loosen it.

3. Insert the speaker cable’s core wire to the hilt into the speaker terminal.

4. Turn the speaker terminal clockwise to tighten it.

NOTE:

• Disconnect the unit’s power plug from the power outlet before connecting speakers.

• Ensure the speaker cable core wires do not protrude from the terminal and touch the rear panel or each other.

• Use speakers with an impedance of 6 – 16 Ω/ohms.

For optimal performance with your DENON AVR-X4000, position your speakers as follows:

• FL/FR (Front Left/Right): Place the FRONT left and right speakers an equal distance from the main listening position. The distance between each speaker and your TV should also be the same.

• C (Center): Place the CENTER speaker in between the front speakers and above or below your TV.

• SL/SR (Surround Left/Right): Place the SURROUND left and right speakers an equal distance to the left and right sides of the main listening position. If you don’t have Surround Back speakers, move the surround speakers slightly behind your listening position.

• SBL/SBR (SB) (Surround Back Left/Right): Place the SURROUND BACK left and right speakers an equal distance from the main listening position and directly behind it. If you only have one Surround Back speaker, center it.

• FHL/FHR (Front Height Left/Right): Place the FRONT HEIGHT left and right speakers just outside of the front left and right speakers. Mount them as close to the ceiling as possible and aim them towards the main listening position.

• FWL/FWR (Front Wide Left/Right): Place the FRONT WIDE left and right speakers outside of the front left and right speakers so that there is an equal distance between all front speakers.

• SW (Subwoofer): Place the SUBWOOFER at a convenient location near the front speakers. If you have two subwoofers, place them symmetrically across the front of your room.

Turning the power on:

Press the POWER (X) button on the remote control or the main unit to turn the power on.

Selecting the input source:

Press the input source select button on the remote control (e.g., DVD, Blu-ray, CBL/SAT) for the device you want to play. You can also turn the SOURCE SELECT knob on the main unit.

Adjusting the master volume:

Use the VOLUME (△▽) buttons on the remote control to adjust the volume. You can also turn the MASTER VOLUME knob on the main unit.

Turning off the sound temporarily (Muting):

Press the MUTE (:) button on the remote. The “MUTE” indicator on the display will flash. Press MUTE again or adjust the volume to cancel.

A bi-amp connection uses four amplifier channels to drive one pair of bi-amp capable speakers, which have separate inputs for the bass driver (woofer) and upper range drivers (tweeter/midrange). This can improve sound quality by avoiding electrical interference between the drivers.

1. Ensure your speakers are bi-amp capable. They will have two sets of input terminals. Consult the speaker’s owner’s manual.

2. Remove the short-circuiting plate or wire between the speaker’s woofer and tweeter terminals.

3. Connect one pair of speaker cables from the FRONT speaker terminals on the DENON AVR-X4000 to the woofer terminals on your speakers.

4. Connect a second pair of speaker cables from the SURROUND BACK speaker terminals on the DENON AVR-X4000 to the tweeter/midrange terminals on your speakers. Ensure you connect the left channel to the left speaker and the right channel to the right speaker for both sets of connections.

5. In the receiver’s menu, go to “Speakers” -> “Manual Setup” -> “Amp Assign” and set “Assign Mode” to “5.1ch (Bi-Amp)”.

Your DENON AVR-X4000 can play music and view still picture (JPEG) files from a USB memory device. It supports WMA, MP3, WAV, MPEG-4 AAC, FLAC, and ALAC file types.

1. Connect the USB memory device to the USB port on the front panel of the receiver.

2. Press the iPod/USB button on the remote control to switch the input source to “iPod/USB”. The file/folder list will appear on your TV.

3. Use the cursor buttons (△▽) to select the file you want to play, then press ENTER. Playback will start.

The following buttons can be used for playback control:

Listening to FM Broadcasts

1. Press the TUNER button on the remote to switch the input source to “TUNER”.

2. Press TUNE + or TUNE – to scan for the station you want to hear. The receiver will stop scanning when it finds an available radio station.

Presetting a Station (Preset Memory)

You can preset up to 56 of your favorite stations.

1. Tune in to the broadcast station you want to preset.

2. Press the OPTION button.

3. Use the cursor buttons (△▽) to select “Preset Memory”, then press ENTER.

4. Use the cursor buttons (△▽) or the number buttons (0 – 9) to select the channel number you want to preset, then press ENTER. The station is now saved to that preset channel.

Listening to Preset Stations

Use the CH/PAGE (△▽) buttons or the number buttons (0 – 9) on the remote to select the desired preset channel.

You can stream music stored on your Apple device directly to the DENON AVR-X4000.

1. Ensure your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your DENON AVR-X4000.

2. Start the music or iPod app on your Apple device. The AirPlay icon will be displayed on the screen.

3. Tap the AirPlay icon.

4. Select “Denon AVR-X4000” from the list of available speakers. The music will now play through your receiver.

You can stream your iTunes library from a Mac or Windows PC to the DENON AVR-X4000.

1. Install iTunes 10 or later on a computer that is connected to the same network as the receiver.

2. Turn your DENON AVR-X4000 ON. For best results, set “IP Control” to “Always On” in the receiver’s Network settings menu.

3. Launch iTunes on your computer. Click the AirPlay icon (which looks like a rectangle with a triangle at the bottom) displayed in the iTunes window.

4. Select “Denon AVR-X4000” from the list of devices.

5. Choose a song and click play in iTunes. The music will stream to your receiver.

The sleep timer function can automatically switch the power to standby after a set time has elapsed. It can be set for each zone (MAIN ZONE, ZONE2, ZONE3).

1. Press the MAIN, ZONE2, or ZONE3 button on the remote to switch to the zone you want to set the timer for. The button for the selected zone will light up.

2. Press the SLEEP button repeatedly to cycle through the desired time. You can set the timer from 10 to 120 minutes in steps of 10 minutes. The sleep timer indicator will light on the display.

To cancel the sleep timer:

Press the SLEEP button until “Off” is displayed. The sleep timer indicator on the display will turn off.

You can save your preferred settings (input source, volume level, sound mode, and Audyssey settings) to the QUICK SELECT 1 – 4 buttons for easy recall.

1. Set the items below to the settings you want to save:

• Input source

• Volume

• Sound mode

• Audyssey settings

2. Press and hold the desired QUICK SELECT button (1, 2, 3, or 4) on the front panel until “Quick * Memory” appears on the display. The current settings are now memorized to that button.

To recall the settings, simply press the desired QUICK SELECT button once.

If the display is abnormal or operations cannot be performed, you can reset the microprocessor to its factory default settings. Note that this will erase all your current settings.

1. Turn off the power using the Power (X) button.

2. Press the Power (X) button while simultaneously pressing the INFO and BACK buttons on the front panel (behind the door).

3. Once the display starts flashing at intervals of about 1 second, release the two buttons.

If the display does not start flashing, please start over from step 1.

If your DENON AVR-X4000 is having power issues, check the following:

Power does not turn on:

• Check whether the power plug is correctly inserted into the power outlet.

Power automatically turns off:

• The sleep timer may be set. Try turning the power on again.

• The “Auto Standby” feature may be activated. This feature turns the unit off after a period of inactivity. To disable this, go to the menu and set “Auto Standby” to “Off”.

Power turns off and the power indicator flashes in red approx. every 2 seconds:

• This indicates the protection circuit has been activated due to a rise in temperature. Turn off the power, wait for about an hour for the unit to cool down, and ensure it is in a well-ventilated place before turning it on again.

Power turns off and the power indicator flashes in red approx. every 0.5 seconds:

• The protection circuit may have been activated due to a speaker wire issue. Unplug the power cord. Check that speaker cable core wires are not touching each other or the rear panel of the unit. Correct any issues and reconnect the wire.

• After checking the speaker wires, turn the volume down and turn the power on again.

• If the problem persists, the unit’s amplifier circuit may have failed. Turn off the power and contact a Denon service adviser.

If the remote control for your DENON AVR-X4000 is not working, please check the following points:

• The batteries may be worn out. Replace them with new batteries.

• Ensure you are operating the remote within about 7 meters (23 feet) and at an angle of within 30° of the front panel sensor.

• Remove any obstacles between the remote control and the unit’s remote sensor.

• Check that the batteries are inserted in the proper direction, matching the ⊕ and ⊖ marks.

• The unit’s remote sensor may be exposed to strong light (like direct sunlight or from an inverter-type fluorescent bulb). Move the unit to a place where the sensor is not exposed to strong light.

• Ensure the correct operation zone (MAIN, ZONE2, or ZONE3) is selected on the remote control.

• The remote might be in a mode to operate other devices (DEV. or TV indicator is lit). Press the AVR button to switch the remote to operate the receiver.

If no sound is coming out of the speakers connected to your DENON AVR-X4000, please follow these steps:

• Check connections: Ensure all cables are correctly and securely connected for all devices.

• Check speaker cables: Make sure speaker cables are properly connected, with no loose strands touching the rear panel or other terminals.

• Check input source: Verify that the correct input source is selected on the receiver.

• Check volume: Adjust the master volume. The volume may be turned all the way down.

• Check mute: Cancel the mute mode. The MUTE indicator will be flashing on the display if it’s active.

• Check digital connections: Verify the digital input connector settings in the menu. Also, check the digital audio output setting on the connected device (e.g., your Blu-ray player); on some devices, it is set to off by default.

• Check headphones: No sound is output from the speakers when headphones are connected.

• Check DVI-D connection: If using a DVI-D connection for video, no sound will be transmitted. You must make a separate audio connection.

If you have no picture on your TV, check the following possible causes:

• Check all video cable connections for all devices and ensure they are secure.

• Make sure the input setting on your TV is matched to the input connector you are using to connect the receiver.

• Check that the proper input source is selected on the DENON AVR-X4000.

• Check the video input connector settings in the receiver’s menu.

• Make sure the output resolution of your source device (e.g., Blu-ray player) is compatible with your TV.

• Your TV may not be compatible with HDCP (copyright protection). If you connect a device that is not compatible with HDCP, video will not be output correctly.

• The receiver cannot convert an HDMI signal to an analog signal. If your source is connected via HDMI, your TV must also be connected via HDMI.

If the menu or status information from your DENON AVR-X4000 is not displaying on your TV, consider the following:

• The menu screen is only displayed on a TV connected by an HDMI cable. If you are using a different type of video connection (component, composite), you must operate the receiver while watching the display on the unit itself.

• No status information is displayed for some 3D videos or videos with a computer resolution (like VGA).

• In the Pure Direct playback mode, the menu screen and status information are not displayed. Switch to a different sound mode to see the menu.

• Check the “TV Format” setting in the menu and ensure it is set to a selection that is appropriate for your TV (PAL or NTSC).
