What does the “HOT SURFACE. DO NOT TOUCH.” caution mean?

The top surface over the internal heat sink may become hot when operating this product continuously.

Do not touch hot areas, especially around the “Hot surface mark” and the top panel.


What are the general warnings for using this receiver?

• Avoid high temperatures. Allow for sufficient heat dispersion when installed in a rack.

• Handle the power cord carefully. Hold the plug when unplugging the cord.

What are the main features of the AVR-1912?

Fully discrete, identical quality and power for all 7 channels (125 W x 7ch)

The unit is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction.

Supports internet radio, music, and photograph streaming. Supports AirPlay®

When connected to a network, this unit can play audio files and still images such as photographs that are stored on your computer. You can also listen to internet radio and a host of other online music sources that use network technology. This unit also supports AirPlay that lets you stream your music library from an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or iTunes.

Compatible with “Denon Remote App” for performing basic operations of the unit with an iPhone or iPod touch

“Denon Remote App” is application software that allows you to perform basic operations with an iPhone or iPod touch such as turning the unit ON/OFF, controlling the volume, and switching the source.

Easy to use, Graphical User Interface

This unit is equipped with an easy to see “Graphical User Interface” that uses menu displays and levels. The use of level displays increases operability of the this unit.

Direct play for iPod® and iPhone® via USB

Music data from an iPod can be played back if you connect the USB cable supplied with the iPod via the USB port of this unit, and also an iPod can be controlled with the remote control unit for this unit. When an iPod is connected, merely pressing iPod 1 on the main unit starts playback of music from the iPod.

Supports HDMI 1.4a with 3D, ARC, Deep Color, “x.v.Color”, Auto Lip Sync and HDMI control function

This unit can output 3D video signals input from a Blu-ray Disc player to a TV that supports a 3D system. This unit also supports the ARC (Audio Return Channel) function, which reproduces TV sound with this unit via an HDMI cable used for connecting the unit and a TV.

6-HDMI inputs and 1-output

The unit is equipped with 6 HDMI input connectors for connecting devices with HDMI connectors, such as a Blu-ray Disc player, game machine, HD video camera, etc.

High definition audio support

The unit is equipped with a decoder which supports high-quality digital audio format for Blu-ray Disc players such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, etc.

Setup wizard, providing easy-to-follow setup instructions

What are the cautions on handling the receiver?

• Before turning the power on

Check once again that all connections are correct and that there are no problems with the connection cables.

• Power Supply

Power is supplied to some of the circuitry even when the unit is set to the standby mode. When going on vacation or leaving home for long periods of time, be sure to unplug the power cord from the power outlet.

• About condensation

If there is a major difference in temperature between the inside of the unit and the surroundings, condensation (dew) may form on the operating parts inside the unit, causing the unit not to operate properly. If this happens, let the unit sit for an hour or two with the power turned off and wait until there is little difference in temperature before using the unit.

• Cautions on using mobile phones

Using a mobile phone near this unit may result in noise. If that occurs, move the mobile phone away from this unit when it is in use.

• Moving the unit

Turn off the power and unplug the power cord from the power outlet. Next, disconnect the connection cables to other system units before moving the unit.

• About care

• Wipe the cabinet and control panel clean with a soft cloth.

• Follow the instructions when using a chemical cleaner.

• Benzene, paint thinner or other organic solvents as well as insecticide may cause material changes and discoloration if brought into contact with the unit, and should therefore not be used.


What should I know before making connections to the receiver?

• Make connections as follows before using this unit. Select an appropriate connection type according to the devices to be connected.

• You may need to make some settings on this unit depending on the connection method. Refer to each description for more information.

• Select the cables (sold separately) according to the devices being connected.

NOTE

• Do not plug in the power cord until all connections have been completed. (When the Setup wizard is running, follow the instructions in the Setup wizard screen for making connections.)

• When running the Setup wizard, turn off the power supply of connected devices.

• When making connections, also refer to the operating instructions of the other devices being connected.

• Be sure to connect the left and right channels properly (left with left, right with right).

• Do not bundle power cords together with connection cables. Doing so can result in noise.


How does the video conversion function work?

This unit is equipped with four types of video input connectors (HDMI, Component video, S-Video and video) and two types of video output connectors (HDMI and video).

Use the connectors corresponding to the devices to be connected.

This function automatically converts various formats of video signals input to this unit into the formats used to output the video signals from this unit to a monitor.

• The video conversion function supports the NTSC, PAL, SECAM, NTSC 4.43, PAL-N, PAL-M and PAL-60 formats.

NOTE

• HDMI signals cannot be converted into analog signals.

• Component video input signals cannot be converted into Video format.

• When a non-standard video signal from a game machine or some other source is input, the video conversion function might not operate.


What kind of information is displayed on the TV screen?

• Menu screen: This screen allows you to access and adjust various settings like Audio Adjust, Information, Setup Wizard, System Setup, and Input Setup.

• Status display screen: This screen appears briefly when the input source is switched or the volume is adjusted. It shows information like the current source, surround mode, and master volume level.

NOTE

• If you operate the menu while playing back 3D video content or a computer’s resolution (e.g., VGA), the playback video is replaced by the menu screen.

• This unit does not show the status display while playing back 3D video content or a computer’s resolution (e.g., VGA).

• The menu screen and status display are shown when this unit and a TV are connected by HDMI. They are not displayed when connected by VIDEO.


What HDMI functions does the AVR-1912 support?

This unit supports the following HDMI functions:

What is the HDCP copyright protection system?

To play back digital video and audio such as BD-Video or DVD-Video via an HDMI connection, both this unit and the TV or player need to support the copyright protection system known as HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection System). HDCP is a copyright protection technology comprised of data encryption and authentication of the connected AV devices. This unit supports HDCP.

If a device that does not support HDCP is connected, video and audio will not be output correctly. Read the owner’s manual of your television or player for more information.


What type of HDMI cables should I use?

• When a device supporting Deep Color is connected, use a cable compatible with “High Speed HDMI cable” or “High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet”.

• When the ARC function is used, connect a device with a “Standard HDMI cable with Ethernet” or “High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet” for HDMI 1.4a.


What is the HDMI control function?

This function allows you to operate external devices from the unit and operate the unit from external devices.

NOTE:

• The HDMI control function may not work depending on the device it is connected to and its settings.

• You cannot operate a TV or Blu-ray Disc player/DVD player that is not compatible with the HDMI control function.


What do I need to know about the 3D function?

This unit supports the input and output of 3D (3-dimensional) video signals of HDMI 1.4a. To play back 3D video, you need a TV and player that support the HDMI 1.4a 3D function and a pair of 3D glasses.

NOTE:

• When playing back 3D video, refer to the instructions provided in the manual of your playback device along with this manual.

• If you operate the menu while playing back 3D video content, the playback video is replaced by the menu screen. The playback video is not displayed behind the menu screen.

• This unit does not show the status display while playing back 3D video content.

• If 3D video with no 3D information is input, the menu screen and status display on this unit are displayed over the playback video.

• If 2D video is converted to 3D video on the television, the menu screen and status display on this unit are not displayed correctly. To view them correctly, turn off the television’s 2D to 3D video conversion setting.


What is the ARC (Audio Return Channel) function?

The Audio Return Channel in HDMI 1.4a enables a TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data “upstream” to this unit.

NOTE:

• To enable the ARC function, set “HDMI Control” to “ON” in the menu.

• When connecting a TV that does not support the ARC function, a separate connection using an audio cable is required.


What is the HDMI Content Type function?

HDMI 1.4a enables simple, automated picture setting selection with no user intervention. To enable the Content Type, set “Video Mode” to “Auto” in the menu.


How do I connect an HDMI-compatible device?

You can use a single HDMI cable to transfer digital video and audio signals. Connect your Blu-ray Disc player, DVD player, set-top box, game console, or digital camcorder to one of the HDMI IN ports on the receiver. Connect the HDMI OUT (MONITOR) port to your TV’s HDMI IN port.

• When this unit is connected to other devices with HDMI cables, connect this unit and TV also with an HDMI cable.

• When connecting a device that supports Deep Color, please use a “High Speed HDMI cable” or “High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet”.

• Video signals are not output if the input video signals do not match the monitor’s resolution. In this case, switch the Blu-ray Disc/DVD player’s resolution to one that the monitor is compatible with.

• If the monitor is not compatible with HDMI audio signal playback, only the video signals are output to the monitor.


How do I connect a device with a DVI-D connector?

When an HDMI/DVI conversion cable (sold separately) is used, the HDMI video signals are converted to DVI signals, allowing connection to a device equipped with a DVI-D connector.

NOTE:

• No sound is output when connected to a device equipped with a DVI-D connector. Make separate audio connections.

• Signals cannot be output to DVI-D devices that do not support HDCP.

• Depending on the combination of devices, the video signals may not be output.


How do I connect a TV?

To listen to TV audio through this device, use an optical digital cable to connect the TV’s OPTICAL OUT to the receiver’s OPTICAL IN (TV) port. For video, refer to the HDMI connection instructions.

NOTE: The optical connection is not required when a TV compatible with the ARC (Audio Return Channel) function is connected to this unit via an HDMI connection. For details, see “About ARC (Audio Return Channel) function” or refer to your TV’s instruction manual.

If necessary, go to the “Input Assign” menu to change the digital input connector assignment for the TV source.


How do I connect a Blu-ray or DVD player?

You can enjoy video and audio from a Blu-ray Disc or DVD. Select the connector to use and connect the device.

HDMI Connection (Recommended): For the best quality, including HD Audio, use an HDMI cable to connect the player’s HDMI OUT to one of the receiver’s HDMI IN ports (e.g., BD or DVD).

Analog Connection: If not using HDMI, connect the player’s VIDEO OUT to the receiver’s VIDEO IN (e.g., DVD) using a video cable. For audio, connect the player’s AUDIO OUT (L/R) to the receiver’s AUDIO IN (L/R) using an audio cable.

After connecting, you may need to go to the “Input Assign” menu to assign the correct input connectors to the source.


How do I connect a set-top box (Satellite/Cable TV)?

Select the connector type that matches your set-top box.

HDMI Connection (Recommended): Connect the set-top box’s HDMI OUT to the receiver’s SAT/CBL HDMI IN port.

Component Video Connection: Connect the Y, PB, PR outputs from the set-top box to the corresponding COMPONENT VIDEO IN on the receiver. For audio, use either a coaxial digital cable (COAXIAL OUT to COAXIAL IN) or a standard analog audio cable (AUDIO OUT L/R to AUDIO IN L/R).

After connecting, go to the “Input Assign” menu to ensure the correct connectors are assigned to the SAT/CBL source.


How do I connect a digital camcorder or game machine?

You can enjoy video and audio from a digital camcorder or games by connecting it to the V.AUX input connectors on the front of the receiver.

1. Connect the VIDEO OUT of your camcorder/game machine to the yellow VIDEO IN jack on the front panel.

2. Connect the AUDIO OUT (L/R) of your device to the white (L) and red (R) AUDIO IN jacks on the front panel.

3. Select the input source to “V.AUX”.

For camcorders with an HDMI output, you can also connect it to one of the rear HDMI IN ports.

NOTE: When a non-standard video signal from a game machine or some other source is input, the video conversion function might not operate. In this case, use the monitor output of the same connector as the input.


How do I connect a DENON control dock for iPod?

Connect a control dock for iPod (e.g., ASD-1R or ASD-11R, sold separately) to enjoy video and music stored on an iPod.

1. Use the AV/Control Cable supplied with the DENON control dock for iPod.

2. Connect the cable to the DOCK CONTROL port on the receiver.

3. Connect the other ends of the cable to the corresponding audio and video inputs on the receiver (usually the DOCK inputs).

For specific instructions on the control dock settings, refer to the control dock’s operating instructions.


How do I connect an iPod or USB memory device to the USB port?

You can enjoy music stored on an iPod or USB memory device by connecting it to the front USB port.

For an iPod: Use the USB cable supplied with your iPod to connect it to the USB port on the front of this unit.

For a USB memory device: Plug the USB memory device directly into the front USB port.

NOTE:

• To play back a video file stored on an iPod, a DENON control dock is required.

• Playback is possible with iPhone, iPod touch, classic, and nano (5th-generation or later).

• DENON does not guarantee that all USB memory devices will operate or receive power. If using a portable USB HDD that requires external power, use its AC adapter.

• USB memory devices will not work via a USB hub.

• Do not use an extension cable when connecting a USB memory device.

• This unit does not support playback on an iPad. Do not connect an iPad to the unit.

• When connecting an iPhone, keep it at least 20 cm away from the unit to avoid noise during phone calls.


How do I connect the FM and AM antennas?

Connect the supplied FM and AM loop antennas to enjoy listening to radio broadcasts.

AM Loop Antenna Assembly:

1. Put the stand section through the bottom of the loop antenna from the rear and bend it forward.

2. Insert the projecting part into the square hole in the stand. You can then stand it alone or suspend it on a wall.

Connections:

1. For the AM loop antenna, connect the two wire ends to the AM antenna terminals (Black and White).

2. For the FM indoor antenna, plug the connector into the FM 75Ω COAXIAL terminal.

3. If you have an FM outdoor antenna, disconnect the indoor antenna and connect the outdoor one to the FM terminal.

4. After connecting, tune to a broadcast and position the antenna where the noise level is minimal.

NOTE:

• Do not connect two FM antennas simultaneously.

• Even if an external AM antenna is used, do not disconnect the AM loop antenna.

• If you are unable to receive a good broadcast signal, installing an outdoor antenna is recommended.


How do I connect a CD player?

To enjoy CD sound, connect your CD player to the receiver.

1. Use a standard analog audio cable (RCA).

2. Connect the AUDIO OUT (L/R) from your CD player to the CD AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks on the back of the receiver.

If you need to use a digital connection, you can assign one of the digital inputs (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) to the CD source in the “Input Assign” menu.


How do I connect the receiver to a home network (LAN)?

Connecting this unit to your home network allows you to play music files from a computer, listen to Internet radio, and use other network features.

Required System:

Broadband internet connection: A contract with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is required.

Modem: Connects to your broadband line.

Router: A router with a built-in DHCP server and a 100BASE-TX switch is recommended.

Ethernet cable (CAT-5 or greater recommended): Use a shielded STP or ScTP LAN cable.

Connection Steps:

1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router’s LAN port to the ETHERNET port on the back of the receiver.

2. Ensure your router is connected to your modem, and the modem is connected to the internet.

NOTE:

• Do not connect the ETHERNET connector directly to a LAN port on your computer.

• This unit is not compatible with PPPoE; a PPPoE-compatible router is required if your ISP uses this protocol.

• If your network requires manual settings (static IP), you will need to configure them in the “Network Setup” menu.


What is Audyssey® Auto Setup?

Audyssey® Auto Setup is a feature that automatically measures the acoustic characteristics of your connected speakers and listening room, then makes the optimum settings for them. It measures multiple locations around the listening area to achieve the best results.

When you perform Audyssey® Auto Setup, the following functions become active:

• Audyssey MultEQ®

• Audyssey Dynamic EQ®

• Audyssey Dynamic Volume®


How should I place the setup microphone for Audyssey® Auto Setup?

Proper microphone placement is crucial for accurate measurements.

Main Listening Position (*M): The main listening position is where a listener would normally sit. Before starting, place the setup microphone in this main listening position. The measurements from this position are used to calculate speaker distance, level, polarity, and the subwoofer crossover.

Multiple Positions: For best results, it is recommended to measure in up to six positions around the main listening area. This helps the system create a more effective correction for the entire space.

Microphone Height: Mount the setup microphone on a tripod or stand and adjust the height of the sound receptor to the level of the listener’s ear.

Important Notes:

• Make the room as quiet as possible. Close windows and turn off devices like TVs, radios, and air conditioners.

• Do not stand between the speakers and the microphone during measurements.

• Do not hold the setup microphone in your hand.

• Avoid placing the microphone too close to a seat back or wall, as reflections can cause inaccurate results.


How do I perform the Audyssey® Auto Setup procedure?

Follow these steps to automatically configure your speakers.

STEP 1: Preparation

1. Set up the microphone: Mount the setup microphone on a tripod at the main listening position, at ear level.

2. Set up the subwoofer: If using a subwoofer with a direct mode, set it to “On”. If not, set its Volume to the “12 o’clock position” and its Crossover frequency to “Maximum/Highest Frequency”.

3. Set up the remote control: Press ZONE SELECT to switch to MAIN ZONE. Press AMP to set the remote to AMP operation mode.

4. Connect the microphone: Plug the setup microphone into the SETUP MIC jack on the front of the unit. A screen will appear on your TV.

5. Select “Next” and press ENTER.

STEP 2: Detect & Measure (Main Position)

6. On the “Audyssey Auto Setup” screen, select “Auto Setup Start” and press ENTER. (You can also adjust Amp Assign or Channel Select here if needed).

7. Select “Measure” and press ENTER. A test tone will be output from each speaker. This will take several minutes.

8. The detected speakers will be displayed. Check that they match your setup.

9. Select “Next -> Measure” and press ENTER.

STEP 3: Measure (2nd – 6th Positions)

10. Move the setup microphone to the second listening position. Select “Measure” and press ENTER. The measurement will start. You can repeat this for up to six positions.

11. After all desired positions are measured (or if you select “Next -> Calculate” to skip remaining positions), proceed to the next step.

STEP 4: Calculate

12. On the STEP 3 screen, select “Next -> Calculate” and press ENTER. The system will analyze the results, which may take several minutes.

STEP 5: Check

13. Use the arrow keys to select and check the results (Sp.Config, Distance, Ch.Level, Crossover).

14. When finished, select “Next -> Store” and press ENTER.

STEP 6: Store & Finish

15. Select “Store” and press ENTER to save the measurement results.

16. Unplug the setup microphone from the unit’s SETUP MIC jack.

17. A prompt will ask “Turn on Dynamic Volume?”. Select “Yes” or “No” and press ENTER.


What does the Audyssey error “Caution! Microphone or Speaker is none” mean?

Error Details:

• The connected setup microphone is broken, or a device other than the supplied setup microphone is connected.

• Not all speakers could be detected.

• The front L speaker was not properly detected.

Measures:

• Connect the included setup microphone to the SETUP MIC jack of this unit.

• Check the speaker connections.


What does the Audyssey error “Caution! Ambient noise is too high or Level is too low” mean?

Error Details:

• There is too much noise in the room for accurate measurements to be made.

• Speaker or subwoofer sound is too low for accurate measurements to be made.

Measures:

• Either turn off any device generating noise or move it away.

• Perform again when the surroundings are quieter.

• Check the speaker installation and the direction in which the speakers are facing.

• Adjust the subwoofer’s volume.


What does the Audyssey error “Caution! Speaker:None” for a specific speaker mean?

Error Detail: The displayed speaker could not be detected. (For example, the screen indicates the front right speaker cannot be detected.)

Measure: Check the connections of the displayed speaker.


What does the Audyssey error “Caution! Speaker:Phase” for a specific speaker mean?

Error Detail: The displayed speaker is connected with the polarity reversed. (The screen indicates that the polarity phases of the front right speaker, for example, are reversed.)

Measures:

• Check the polarity of the displayed speaker.

• For some speakers, this error message may be displayed even if the speaker is properly connected. If you are sure the connection is correct, press the up/down arrows to select “Skip”, then press ENTER.

Set “Dimmer” on the menu to something other than “OFF”.


The power indicator is blinking red in intervals of approximately 2 seconds. Why?

• The temperature inside the unit has risen. Please turn off power once, and re-apply the power after the temperature has fallen sufficiently.

• Please re-install this unit in a place with good ventilation.


The power indicator is blinking red in intervals of approximately 0.5 seconds. What does this mean?

• Please use speakers which have the specified impedance.

• The speaker cable has shorted (is touching). Firmly twist the core wire in the speaker cable, and then re-connect it to the speaker terminal.

• The unit’s amplifier circuit may have failed. Turn off the power and please contact the DENON service adviser.


The set does not operate properly. What should I do?

Try resetting the microprocessor.


There is no audio output with an HDMI connection. What should I do?

• Check the connection of the HDMI connectors.

• When outputting HDMI audio from the speakers, set “HDMI Audio Out” on the menu to “AMP”.

• When outputting HDMI audio from a TV, set “HDMI Audio Out” on the menu to “TV”.


There is no video output with an HDMI connection. What is the problem?

• Check the connection of the HDMI connectors.

• Set the input source to match the connected HDMI connector.

• Check whether the TV is compatible with copyright protection (HDCP). If connected to a device not compatible with HDCP, video will not be output correctly.


Audio is not being output from any speakers. What should I check?

• Check the connections for all devices.

• Check the speaker connections and configurations.

• Check whether the audio device power is turned on.

• Adjust the master volume.

• Cancel the mute mode.

• Select a suitable input source.

• Select a suitable input mode.

• Disconnect the headphones. No sound is output from the speakers or the PRE OUT connectors when headphones are connected.


There is no sound from the surround, surround back, or front height speakers. What is the issue?

• Check that the respective speakers are connected correctly.

• For surround back and front height speakers, check if “Amp Assign” is set appropriately in the menu.

• Check the “Speaker Config.” settings to ensure the speakers are not set to “None”.

• For surround back speakers, check that “Surr.Parameter” – “S.Back” is not set to “OFF”.

• For front height speakers, check that “Surr.Parameter” – “PLIIz Height” is set to “ON”.

• Ensure the surround mode is not set to “STEREO” or “VIRTUAL”.


There is no sound from the subwoofer. What should I check?

• Check the subwoofer connections.

• Turn on the subwoofer’s power.

• In the menu, go to “Speaker Config.” and set “Subwoofer” to “Yes”.

• If “Front” and “Center” speakers are set to “Large” and “Subwoofer Mode” is set to “LFE”, no sound may be output from the subwoofer, depending on the input signal or selected surround mode.


Dolby PLII mode or DTS NEO:6 mode cannot be selected. Why?

• Check that “Speaker Config.” – “Center” or “Surround” is set to something other than “None”. If the speaker system is 2.0/2.1ch, this surround mode cannot be selected.

• When headphones are used, Dolby PLII or DTS NEO:6 cannot be selected.


Audyssey MultEQ®, Dynamic EQ®, or Dynamic Volume® cannot be selected. What is the cause?

• Switch the surround mode to other than “DIRECT” or “PURE DIRECT”.

• When headphones are used, these functions cannot be selected.

• You may need to run Audyssey® Auto Setup again.


Radio reception fails, or there is a lot of noise or distortion. How can I fix this?

• Change the antenna orientation or position.

• Separate the AM loop antenna from the unit.

• Use an FM outdoor antenna.

• Separate the antenna from other connection cables.


My iPod cannot be played when connected to the USB port. Why?

Some iPods do not support being used connected directly to the USB port.


I cannot connect to preset or favorite internet radio stations. What is wrong?

• The radio station may not be currently broadcasting. Wait a while before trying again.

• The radio station may no longer be in service.

• The station may be congested or not currently broadcasting. Wait a while before trying again.


The set cannot be operated with the remote control unit. What should I check?

• Batteries are worn out. Replace with new batteries.

• Operate the remote control unit within a distance of about 23 ft/7 m from this unit and at an angle of within 30°.

• Remove any obstacle between this unit and the remote control unit.

• Insert the batteries in the proper direction, checking the + and – marks.

• The set’s remote control sensor may be exposed to strong light. Move the set to a place where the remote control sensor will not be exposed to strong light.

• The ZONE SELECT setting may not be correct. Press ZONE SELECT to select the zone to operate.

• The operation mode may not match the settings of the device to operate. Check the operation mode.
