Unfolding with Seating Module Attached:
1. Install rear wheels on the mobility base if they have been removed. Confirm the wheels are all the way in and you hear a “click,” indicating securement on the axle.
2. Pull on the recline cord on the back of the seating module and bring the seat back to an upright position.
3. Install 90° removable front riggings by squeezing the red levers on both sides and sliding them onto the leg rest extension tube.
Preparing Mobility Base without Seating Module:
1. Install rear wheels if they have been removed. Confirm they are secure by listening for the “click”.
WARNING: Keep fingers free of the folding mechanism.
How do I fold the CONVAID FLYER wheelchair?
Folding Instructions with Seating Module Attached:
1. Remove the user from the chair.
2. Make sure the tilt is returned to the upright position before folding.
3. While holding the back on the push handle, pull on the recline cord from the center of the pull strap.
4. Fold the seat back forward by pulling the recline cord and pushing the seat back forward, then release the recline cord.
5. Simultaneously grasp and squeeze the red levers on both sides of the 90-degree removable leg rest (if equipped) and pull out to remove. Folding may be limited by positioning components.
Unfolding Instructions:
1. Move the seat back to the upright position.
2. Adjust the seat to back angle to the desired position and release the recline cord. Check for proper pin engagement.
How do I lift and carry the components of the CONVAID FLYER?
Lifting/Carrying the Seating Module:
1. To safely lift or carry the Seating Module, hold it using two hands.
2. With one hand, hold the seating module by the backrest handle bar.
3. With the other hand, hold the lock bar located on the bottom of the seat.
Lifting/Carrying the Mobility Base:
1. To safely lift or carry the Flyer mobility base, grasp the curved side mobility base tubes using two hands, keeping clear of wheels and accessories.
WARNINGS:
ALWAYS carry the seating module by the backrest handle bar and the module’s lock bar.
ALWAYS check that the tilt and recline mechanisms are locked before lifting or carrying the seating module.
Keep your hands away from folding mechanisms when carrying/lifting the Flyer.
Accessories will add extra weight to the module. Lift with caution.
How do I install the Seating Module onto the Mobility Base of the CONVAID FLYER?
1. Ensure the wheel lock is engaged.
2. Adjust the seat back angle to an upright 90-degree position by pulling the recline cord.
3. Carefully lift the seating module with both hands, one holding the upper back and the other holding the lock bar at the bottom of the seat.
4. Face the seating module forward at a 45-degree angle over the mobility base docking tubes. Align the rear docking plate insert on the seating module with the rear cross tube on the mobility base.
5. With the seating module resting on the rear mobility base tube, slide the safety latch lock lever and lift the docking latch tube.
6. Pivot the module forward. Once fully docked, the seating module will automatically click in place. Ensure the docking latch is firmly attached.
WARNING: Check for proper seat module docking by lifting the front seat pan up and down to ensure it does not disengage from the mobility base before placing a user in the chair.
How do I remove the Seating Module from the Mobility Base of the CONVAID FLYER?
1. Engage wheel locks.
2. Remove the user from the chair.
3. Adjust the seat back to the upright position.
4. Adjust tilt to a neutral position so the seat pan is parallel to the floor.
5. Hold the seat base lock bar and push the safety lock release lever.
6. Lift the seat module safety latch lock.
7. Once the safety latch lock is released, push on the upper back to release the seating module from the docking tubes on the mobility base.
8. Lift the seating module from the mobility base.
WARNING: Always remove the user from the chair prior to removal of the seating module. The mobility base should never be used without the seating module assembly properly installed. The seating module shall NEVER be used as a car seat.
How do I adjust the back height of the CONVAID FLYER?
To determine the correct back height, measure from the seat to the upper portion of the user’s shoulder.
1. Loosen the two back plate adjustment knobs.
2. Loosen the chair upholstery attached to the back as necessary.
3. Slide the back up or down carefully to the desired position.
4. Tighten knobs and check for proper position of all items loosened in step 1.
WARNING: Confirm that all adjustment knobs and accessories are properly tightened before placing the user back in the chair.
How do I adjust the seat depth of the CONVAID FLYER?
To measure for seat depth, measure from the most posterior portion of the buttocks to the back of the knee and subtract 1-2” (25-51mm) for clearance.
1. Remove the user from the chair.
2. Remove the seating module from the base and remove the cushions.
3. Set the seat back recline to 90 degrees (2nd hole from the top).
4. Follow the Cane Position seat depth adjustment chart for the seat depth position range. Make note of all spacer and washer locations.
5. Loosen any accessories that may prevent the seat pan from sliding.
6. Using a 5/32″ Allen wrench and 7/16″ wrench, remove 2 horizontal bolts and nuts from both sides of the seating module.
7. Remove 2 bolts and nuts from the back of the seating pan. Loosen two (2) adjustment bolts located within the adjustment slots on the top of the seat pan. Do not remove nuts from bolts.
8. Adjust seat tubes with pan attached to the desired depth by aligning holes on the stationary seat base with the incremental holes on the seat tubes. Reattach the hardware removed in step 7. Retighten any loosened hardware.
9. Push the seat pan back evenly on both sides until the desired depth is reached.
10. Tighten the adjustment knobs and any loosened accessories.

How do I adjust the seat width of the CONVAID FLYER?
The seat width of the CONVAID FLYER ranges from 12″ to 16″. Use a 5/32″ Allen wrench and 7/16″ wrench to remove adjustment bolts.
1. Remove the seating module from the mobility base.
2. Remove any cushions or upholstery.
3. Remove the removable leg rest.
4. On the top of the seat pan, remove the six adjustment bolts.
5. On the front of the chair, remove the three adjustment bolts on the docking latch assembly.
6. On the seat back pan, remove the four adjustment bolts connecting the side pans with the center pans.
7. On the back of the chair, remove the adjustment bolts on the back cross tube and lower cross tube.
After removing bolts, adjust the telescoping tubes to the desired width according to the adjustment chart, then reinstall all bolts securely. Note: If a one-piece push handle is installed, an additional growth kit must be purchased.
How do I adjust the tilt-in-space angle on the CONVAID FLYER?
The tilt-in-space range on the CONVAID FLYER is -5° anterior to 40° posterior.
1. With your left hand, hold onto the back cross tube on the back of the seat to support the user’s weight.
2. With your right hand, squeeze the tilt lever on the handle.
3. Move the user to the desired tilt angle while holding the handle and the tilt lever.
4. Release the lever to engage the tilt lock. The tilt has a stopper, so it locks when the lever is released.
Note: When releasing the tilt handle, verify the mechanism is engaged.
How do I adjust the recline angle on the CONVAID FLYER?
The CONVAID FLYER has a standard back angle adjustment of 80° – 110° in 10° increments. An optional feature extends this range to 80° – 130°.
1. Make sure wheel locks are engaged.
2. If a user is in the chair, move their back forward slowly and carefully to shift their weight.
3. Grab the pull strap on the center of the recline cord.
4. With your free hand on the top of the back, and while holding the recline cord, adjust the back to the desired recline angle and release the pull strap.
5. Confirm that the recline lock pins are fully engaged on both sides.
6. Replace the user to a relaxed position and release the wheel locks.
WARNING: Engage wheel locks prior to adjusting recline angle. Check to confirm that recline lock pins are fully engaged prior to use. Keep fingers free of the recline mechanism. Never allow the user’s head to tilt/recline beyond the horizontal plane to the floor.
How do I operate the two-point positioning belt on the CONVAID FLYER?
To Buckle:
Snap together the two straps at the buckle.
To Release:
Press on each side of the buckle to release and pull away from each other.
Note: Feet must be planted on the footplate and securely anchored. The belt must be snug, but not too tight. You should be able to slide your open hand flat between the belt and the occupant. NEVER use positioning belts as a user restraint, or on an occupant who is comatose or agitated.
How do I adjust the footplates on the CONVAID FLYER?
To determine the correct height, measure from the back of the user’s knee to the bottom of the heel. The soles of the feet should rest comfortably on the footplates.
To Adjust the Height on Fixed Individual Footplates (standard) and Angle-adjustable Individual Footplates (Option):
1. Remove detent pins.
2. Slide the footplate up the leg rest extension tube until the desired height has been reached.
3. Reinsert the detent pin.
4. Repeat on the opposite side.
To Adjust the Height on One-Piece Footplate:
1. Remove detent pins from both sides of the footplate.
2. Slide the footplate up the leg rest extension tube until the desired height has been reached.
3. Reinsert detent pins on both sides.
Note: Caster interference may occur when the seat is in an upright position. The seat must be tilted back at least 5° or legrests must be elevated to allow caster swivel.

To Lock Wheels:
Push the wheel lock bar downwards and roll the wheelchair slightly back or forward so that the lock pins can engage into the hub lock disk.
To Unlock Wheels:
To disengage the wheel lock, pull the wheel lock bar upwards with your toe.
WARNING: Do not use excessive force or stand on the wheel lock bar.
How do I remove and install the rear wheels on the CONVAID FLYER?
To Remove the Wheels:
1. Release the wheel locks (wheel lock bar “up”).
2. Press down on the clip near the center of the wheel hub.
3. Pull the wheel outward to remove it from the chair.
WARNING: Do not remove the silver clip.
To install the wheels:
1. Make sure the wheel lock lever is released (wheel lock bar “up”).
2. Hold the axle and wheel. Align the wheel hub with the axle.
3. Slide the wheel as far as possible onto the axle until you hear a “click”.
4. Ensure the wheel is secure on the axle by pulling outward on the wheel without pressing the clip.
5. The wheel will not come off if the clip is properly engaged.

1. Remove the head support cover by unzipping it on the back side.

1. Depress the spring button on the underside of the armrest until the tray mount tube pops out.
2. Grasp the tray mount and extend it until it is locked into position.
3. While holding the tray with both hands, squeeze the black handles and slide it onto the ends of the tray mount.
4. When returning the tray mount tube inside, maintain alignment of the indent button to secure it into the correct hole.
WARNING: The Upper Extremity Support Surface (Tray) with Flip-Up armrests is not recommended for use in transportation.
What are the instructions for using the CONVAID FLYER Transit Model in a vehicle?
The CONVAID FLYER Transit Model has been crash-tested and complies with RESNA WC4:2012 section 19 requirements.
Weight Capacity for Transit Models:

Instructions for transit use:
1. During transit, the chair must be forward-facing. All non-essential accessories should be removed. The head support must always be used.
2. Use only a tested, proven, and compatible 4-point wheelchair tiedown system (WTORS) and a 3-point occupant restraint system in accordance with WC4-18.
3. The wheelchair tiedowns must be securely attached to the four red anchor points on the chair.
4. The occupant restraints must include a lap and shoulder belt, secured directly to the Flyer mobility base and the vehicle.
5. All floor tiedown straps must be drawn tight in the front and back to eliminate any forward/aft movement.
6. Wheelchair restraint manufacturers’ instructions must be followed precisely.
WARNING: While the wheelchair is in transit, wheel locks must be engaged and the wheelchair must be in a forward-facing position.
How do I troubleshoot the Tilt Adjustment Lever on the CONVAID FLYER?
Before attaching the Seating Module to the frame, check if the Tilt Adjustment Lever cable has been correctly aligned and seated inside the adjustment barrel.
To Adjust:
1. Plug the cable end into the adjustment barrel on the bottom of the Seating Module.
2. Make sure the chrome cable end is fully seated inside the adjustment.
WARNING: The cable on the tilt adjustment lever may be pulled loose or dislodged during transport and/or initial assembly. Please check the cable position. Plug the cable end into the adjustment barrel and make sure the chrome cable end is fully seated inside.
