The CANON EOS REBEL SL1 is a digital single-lens reflex camera that includes the following features:

Fine-detail CMOS sensor with approximately 18.0 effective megapixels.

DIGIC 5 image processor.

High-precision and high-speed 9-point AF system.

Continuous shooting at approximately 4 frames per second (fps).

Live View shooting capabilities.

Full High-Definition (Full HD) movie shooting.

The CANON EOS REBEL SL1 can use the following cards regardless of capacity:

SD memory cards.

SDHC memory cards (UHS-I cards supported).

SDXC memory cards (UHS-I cards supported).

When shooting movies, use a large-capacity SD card rated SD Speed Class 6 or higher. If you use a slow-writing card for movies, the movie may not be recorded properly. If you want to shoot still photos while shooting a movie, you will need an even faster card.

Step 1. Remove the protective cover from the Battery Pack LP-E12.

Step 2. Attach the battery securely to the Battery Charger LC-E12 or LC-E12E. To detach the battery, follow the procedure in reverse.

Step 3. For the LC-E12 charger, flip out the prongs and insert them into a power outlet. For the LC-E12E charger, connect the power cord to the charger and insert the plug into a power outlet.

Step 4. Recharging starts automatically. The charge lamp lights up in orange during charging and turns green when the battery is fully recharged.

It takes approximately 2 hours to fully recharge a completely exhausted battery at room temperature (23 degrees Celsius / 73 degrees Fahrenheit).

Step 1. Slide the lever on the card slot and battery compartment cover to open it.

Step 2. Insert the end with the battery contacts first. Insert the battery until it locks into place.

Step 3. Face the card’s label side toward the back of the camera and insert it into the slot until it clicks into place. Ensure the card’s write-protect switch is set upward to enable writing and erasing.

Step 4. Press the cover until it snaps shut.

To attach a lens:

Step 1. Remove the rear lens cap and the body cap by turning them as shown by the arrows in the manual.

Step 2. Align the lens’ red or white index with the camera’s index matching the same color. Turn the lens as shown by the arrow until it clicks into place.

Step 3. Set the lens focus mode switch to AF (autofocus).

Step 4. Remove the front lens cap.

To detach a lens: While pressing the lens release button, turn the lens as shown by the arrows until it stops, then detach it. Attach the lens caps and camera body cap immediately to minimize dust.

Step 1. Press the Menu button.

Step 2. Under the Setup 1 tab (yellow), select Format card, then press the Setting button.

Step 3. Select OK, then press the Setting button.

Step 4. For low-level formatting, press the Erase button to append a checkmark to Low level format, then select OK. Low-level formatting is recommended if the card’s recording or reading speed seems slow or if you want to totally erase all data.

Warning: When a card is formatted, all images and data on the card will be erased, including protected images.

Scene Intelligent Auto is a fully automatic mode where the camera analyzes the scene and sets the optimum settings automatically. It also adjusts focus by detecting whether the subject is still or moving.

Step 1. Set the Mode Dial to the A+ icon.

Step 2. Aim any AF point over the subject. Aiming the center AF point over the subject will make focusing easier.

Step 3. Press the shutter button halfway to focus. The dot inside the AF point achieving focus flashes briefly in red, the beeper sounds, and the focus confirmation light in the viewfinder lights up.

Step 4. Press the shutter button completely to take the picture.

ISO speed represents the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. To set the ISO speed:

Step 1. Press the ISO button.

Step 2. Press the left or right cross keys or turn the Main Dial to select the desired speed, then press the Setting button.

ISO Speed Guide:

ISO 100 – 400: Suitable for sunny outdoors.

ISO 400 – 1600: Suitable for overcast skies or evening time.

ISO 1600 – 12800, H: Suitable for dark indoors or night scenes.

High ISO speeds will result in grainier images. If Highlight tone priority is enabled, the available ISO range is ISO 200 to 12800.

Step 1. Set the power switch to the movie icon position. The reflex mirror will make a sound, and the image will appear on the LCD monitor.

Step 2. Set the Mode Dial to any shooting mode except M for autoexposure shooting. Use M for manual exposure shooting.

Step 3. Focus the subject using AF or manual focus. By default, Movie Servo AF is enabled, so the camera will focus continuously.

Step 4. Press the Live View shooting/Movie shooting button to start recording. A red circle mark will appear on the upper right of the screen.

Step 5. To stop movie shooting, press the Live View shooting/Movie shooting button again.

The CANON EOS REBEL SL1 offers the following movie recording sizes:

1920×1080 (Full HD): Available frame rates are 30p, 25p, and 24p. File size is approximately 330 MB per minute.

1280×720 (HD): Available frame rates are 60p and 50p. File size is approximately 330 MB per minute.

640×480 (SD): Available frame rates are 30p and 25p. File size is approximately 82.5 MB per minute.

The maximum recording time for a single movie clip is 29 minutes and 59 seconds. If the file size reaches 4 GB, a new file will be created automatically.

Step 1. Detach the lens from the camera.

Step 2. Press the Menu button and select Sensor cleaning under the Setup 3 tab (yellow).

Step 3. Select Clean manually and press the Setting button.

Step 4. Select OK and press the Setting button. The reflex mirror will lock up and the shutter will open.

Step 5. Use a commercially-available blower to blow away dust. Do not touch the sensor surface or insert the blower tip beyond the lens mount.

Step 6. When finished, set the power switch to OFF. The mirror will go back down and the shutter will close.

If there is a problem, an error message and a two-digit number will appear. Follow these common countermeasures:

Err 01: Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts on both the camera and lens or use a Canon lens.

Err 02: Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert the card, change the card, or format the card with the camera.

Err 04: Cannot save images because the card is full. Replace the card or erase unnecessary images.

Err 05: The built-in flash could not be raised. Turn the camera off and on again.

Err 06: Sensor cleaning could not be performed. Turn the camera off and on again.

Err 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 99: An error prevented shooting. Turn the power off and on again, or re-install the battery.

If the camera cannot focus (viewfinder’s focus confirmation light blinks), it may be due to the following subjects:

Very low-contrast subjects (e.g., blue sky, solid-color walls).

Subjects in very low light.

Extremely backlit or reflective subjects.

Near and far subjects covered by an AF point.

Repetitive patterns (e.g., skyscraper windows).

In these cases, either focus an object at the same distance as the subject and lock the focus before recomposing, or set the lens focus mode switch to MF and focus manually.
