The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW:

The One Touch buttons on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW are used to store and recall up to eight fax and telephone numbers.

To access stored One Touch fax and telephone numbers 1-4, press the One Touch button assigned to that number.

To access stored One Touch fax and telephone numbers 5-8, press and hold Shift as you press the button.

The Function Buttons on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW have several uses:

Redial/Pause:

Press to dial the last number you called. This button also inserts a pause when programming quick dial numbers or when dialing a number manually.

Hook:

Press Hook before dialing to ensure a fax machine answers, and then press Start. If the machine is in Fax/Tel (F/T) Mode and you pick up the handset of an external telephone during the F/T ring (pseudo double-rings), press Hook to talk.

WiFi (for wireless models):

Press the WiFi button and launch the wireless installer on your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up a wireless connection. When the WiFi light is on, your machine is connected to a wireless access point. If the light blinks, the connection is down or in the process of connecting.

Resolution (for certain models only):

Press to change the Fax resolution.

2 in 1 (ID) Copy:

Press to copy both sides of an identification card onto a single page.

2-sided:

Press to copy on both sides of a sheet of paper.

Options:

Press to access temporary settings for faxing, scanning, or copying.

The LCD on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW displays messages to help you set up and use the machine.

If the machine is in Fax Mode, the LCD displays:

a. Date & Time

b. Receive Mode

When you press COPY, the LCD displays:

c. Type of copy

d. Number of copies

e. Quality

f. Contrast

g. Copy ratio

Mode Buttons:

FAX: Press to switch the machine to Fax Mode.

SCAN: Press to switch the machine to Scan Mode.

COPY: Press to switch the machine to Copy Mode.

Menu Buttons:

Clear: Press to delete entered data or cancel the current setting.

Menu: Press to access the Menu for programming your machine settings.

OK: Press to store your machine settings.

◄ or ►: Press to scroll back or forward through menu selections.

▲ or ▼: Press to scroll up or down through menus and options. In Fax Mode, press to change the resolution.

Speed Dial Icon: Press to access speed dial numbers.

To turn on the BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, press the Power On/Off button.

To turn off the machine, press and hold the Power On/Off button. The LCD displays [Shutting Down] and stays on for a few seconds before turning off. If you have an external telephone or TAD connected, it is always available.

Stop/Exit:

Press to stop an operation.

Press to exit from a menu.

Start:

Press to start sending faxes.

Press to start copying.

Press to start scanning documents.

1. Do one of the following:

(Windows 7) Click Start > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

(Windows 8) Tap or click (Brother Utilities) on the Start screen or desktop.

(Windows 8.1) On the Start screen, bring up the Apps screen and tap or click (Brother Utilities).

(Windows 10) Click Start > Brother > Brother Utilities.

2. Select your model from the drop-down list (if it is not already selected).

3. Click Tools in the left navigation bar.

4. Click Uninstall in the Tools section of Brother Utilities.

5. Follow the instructions in the dialog box to uninstall the software and drivers.

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well.

4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling the paper tray will cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper you are using.

4. Using both hands, put one full sheet of paper in the manual feed slot until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull it in, let go.

Notes:

Load paper into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up.

Make sure the paper is straight and in the correct position.

5. Send your print job to the machine. Change your print preferences in the Print screen before sending the job.

6. After the printed page comes out, load the next sheet of paper in the manual feed slot. Repeat for each page.

To get the best print quality with your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, we recommend using the following paper:

Use the ADF on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW when copying or scanning multiple-page, standard-sized documents.

The ADF can hold up to 50 pages of standard 20 lb (80 g/m²) paper.

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages well.

3. Stagger the pages of your document and load it face up and top edge first into the ADF.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

Width: 4.1 to 8.5 in. (105 to 215.9 mm)

Weight: 16 to 28 lb (60 to 105 g/m²)

To use the scanner glass on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, the ADF must be empty.

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Place the corner of the page in the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is a book or is thick, gently press on the document cover.

Document Sizes Supported:

Length: Up to 11.8 in. (300 mm)

Width: Up to 8.5 in. (215.9 mm)

Weight: Up to 4.4 lb (2 kg)

The following table shows the maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the paper for your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW. Do not attempt to scan, copy, or print in these areas.

To avoid paper jams or damage to your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, DO NOT use the following types of paper:

that is highly textured

that is extremely smooth or shiny

that is curled or warped

that is coated or has a chemical finish

that is damaged, creased or folded

that exceeds the recommended weight specification

with tabs and staples

with letterheads using low temperature dyes or thermography

that is multipart or carbonless

that is designed for inkjet printing

To cancel a single print job on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, press Stop/Exit.

To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold Stop/Exit for four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, follow these steps to print a test page:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Print Options] option, and then press OK.

4. Press the [Test Print] option, and then press OK.

5. Press Start.

The machine will print a Test Print page.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

1. Load your document.

2. Press (SCAN).

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Scan to PC] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Image] option, and then press OK.

5. If the machine is connected over the network, press ▲ or ▼ to select the destination computer.

6. Press OK. If prompted, enter the four-digit PIN for the computer.

7. To use the default scan settings, press Start. To change settings, press Options or Copy/Scan Options and proceed to the next step.

8. Select the scan settings you want to change: [Scan Type], [Resolution], [File Type], [Document Size], [ADF Auto Deskew], or [Remove Bkg. Clr].

9. Press OK.

10. Press Start. The machine starts scanning.

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Do one of the following:

Place the document face up in the ADF (recommended for multiple pages).

Place the document face down on the scanner glass.

3. Press (COPY).

4. Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want.

5. Press Start.

1. Load your document.

2. Press (COPY) and enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Options or Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Enlarge/Reduce], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the enlargement or reduction ratio you want, and then press OK.

If you select [Custom(25-400%)], use the dial pad, or press ▲ or ▼ to enter a ratio from 25% to 400%, then press OK.

6. Press Start.

The N in 1 copy feature saves paper by copying two or four pages of your document onto one page of the copy.

1. Load your document.

2. Press (COPY) and enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Options or Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Page Layout], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Off(1 in 1)], [2 in 1 (P)], [2 in 1 (L)], [4 in 1 (P)] or [4 in 1 (L)], and then press OK.

6. Press Start.

7. If you are using the scanner glass:

a. After the machine scans the page, press ▲ to scan the next page.

b. Place the next page on the scanner glass, and then press OK to scan it.

8. After scanning all the pages, press ▼ to select the [No] option.

1. Load your document.

2. Press (COPY) and enter the number of copies you want.

3. Press Options or Copy/Scan Options.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Stack/Sort], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Sort], and then press OK.

6. Press Start.

7. If using the scanner glass, after the machine scans a page, press ▲ to scan the next page, place it, and press OK. Repeat for all pages.

8. After scanning all pages, press ▼ to select the [No] option to begin printing.

1. Place an identification card face down near the upper left corner of the scanner glass, at least 0.16 in. (4.0 mm) from the edges.

2. Press (COPY).

3. Press 2 in 1 (ID) Copy.

4. Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want.

5. Press Start. The machine scans one side of the identification card.

6. After the machine has scanned the first side, turn over the identification card.

7. Press Start to scan the other side.

To change copy settings on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, press the Options button. Available options include:

1. Place the document face up in the ADF or face down on the scanner glass.

2. Press (FAX).

3. Enter the fax number using one of the following methods:

Using the dial pad.

Using the One Touch Buttons.

Using Speed Dial Codes (press the speed dial icon twice, then enter the three-digit code).

4. Press Start.

If you placed the document on the scanner glass, follow the on-screen instructions to scan additional pages.

Manual fax transmission lets you hear the dialing, ringing and fax-receiving tones while sending a fax.

1. Press (FAX).

2. Load your document.

3. Press Hook and listen for a dial tone.

4. Dial the fax number you want to call.

5. When you hear the fax tone, press Start.

If you are using the scanner glass, press ▲.

Your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW has several receive modes to manage incoming calls:

Fax Only Mode: Automatically answers every call as a fax.

Fax/Tel Mode: Manages incoming calls by recognizing whether they are fax or voice calls. Faxes are received automatically. Voice calls will start a fast pseudo/double-ring (F/T ring) to prompt you to pick up the call.

Manual Mode: Turns off all automatic answering operations. To receive a fax, you must lift the handset of an external telephone or press Hook and then the appropriate button when you hear fax tones.

External TAD Mode: Lets an external telephone answering device manage your incoming calls. Voice messages are stored on the external TAD, and fax messages are printed automatically.

To choose the correct receive mode on your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, follow these steps:

1. Press (FAX).

2. Press Menu.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Fax] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Setup Receive] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Receive Mode] option, and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Fax Only], [Fax/Tel], [External TAD], or [Manual] option, and then press OK.

7. Press Stop/Exit.

The Ring Delay setting sets the number of times the machine rings before it answers in Fax Only and Fax/Tel Modes.

1. Press (FAX).

2. Press Menu.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Fax] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Setup Receive] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Ring Delay] option, and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the number of rings you want before the machine answers, and then press OK.

7. Press Stop/Exit.

If your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW displays an error message, refer to the table below for the cause and recommended action. If you need more tips, you can visit the support website.

Clean the outside and inside of your BROTHER MFC-L2717DW regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the shaded parts of the toner cartridge or drum unit.

WARNING: DO NOT use flammable substances, any type of spray, or an organic solvent/liquid containing alcohol or ammonia to clean the inside or outside of the product. Doing so could cause a fire. Instead, use only a dry, lint-free cloth.

1. Press and hold the power button to turn off the machine.

2. Lift the document cover. Clean the white plastic surface and scanner glass underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.

3. In the ADF unit, clean the white bar and the scanner glass strip underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. Close the document cover.

5. Press the power button to turn on the machine.

If you have print quality problems or the control panel displays a [Drum !] status, clean the corona wire.

1. Open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

4. Be sure to return the tab to the Home position (▲). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. If it is not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover of the machine.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

4. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

5. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

6. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back several times. Return the tab to the home position (▲).

7. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

8. Close the front cover of the machine.

When you replace the drum unit with a new one, you must reset the drum counter by completing the following steps. IMPORTANT: DO NOT reset the drum counter unless you are replacing the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Close the front cover of the machine.

3. Hold down OK as you press ▲.

4. Press OK to select [Drum].

5. Press ▲ to reset the drum counter.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Machine Info.] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Parts Life] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Toner] or [Drum] option, and then press OK.

The LCD displays the approximate remaining toner or drum life.

5. Press Stop/Exit.

Your menu settings are stored permanently and will not be lost in the event of a power failure. However, temporary settings (for example, Contrast) will be lost.

For the BROTHER MFC-L2717DW, during a power failure, the machine will retain the date and time for approximately two hours. The fax jobs in the machine’s memory will be lost.

When text is required, use the dial pad to enter characters. The characters available may differ depending on the operation you perform. The buttons 0, #, and * are used for special characters.

Press the appropriate dial pad button the number of times shown in this reference table to access the character you want:

Inserting spaces: To enter a space in a fax number, press ► once between numbers. To enter a space in a name, press ► twice between characters.

Making corrections: If you entered a character incorrectly, press ◄ or ► to move the cursor to the incorrect character, and then press Clear.
