The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL:

The control panel on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL includes several buttons and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) to help you operate the machine. Here are the main components and their functions:

1. One Touch Buttons:

Store and recall up to eight fax and telephone numbers. To access numbers 1-4, press the assigned button. To access numbers 5-8, press and hold Shift as you press the button.

2. Function Buttons:

Redial/Pause: Dials the last number called or inserts a pause when programming numbers.

Hook: Press before dialing to ensure a fax machine answers. Can also be used to talk on an external telephone in Fax/Tel Mode.

WiFi: Launches the wireless installer on your computer to set up a wireless connection.

Resolution: Changes the fax resolution.

2 in 1 (ID) Copy: Copies both sides of an ID card onto a single page.

2-sided: Copies on both sides of a sheet of paper.

Options: Accesses temporary settings for faxing, scanning, or copying.

3. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD):

Displays messages and settings to help you use the machine.

4. Mode Buttons:

FAX: Switches the machine to Fax Mode.

SCAN: Switches the machine to Scan Mode.

COPY: Switches the machine to Copy Mode.

5. Menu Buttons:

Clear: Deletes entered data or cancels the current setting.

Menu: Accesses the main menu for programming machine settings.

OK: Stores your machine settings.

Arrow Keys (◀, ▶, ▲, ▼): Scrolls through menu selections and options.

6. Dial Pad:

Used to dial fax and telephone numbers and to enter text or characters.

7. Power On/Off:

Turns the machine on or off.

8. Stop/Exit:

Stops an operation or exits from a menu.

9. Start:

Starts sending faxes, copying, or scanning documents.

Follow these steps to load paper into the paper tray of your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the size of the paper you are using. Press the green release levers to slide the guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load the paper in the paper tray with the printing surface facing down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling the tray can cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

When printing on thick paper, labels, or envelopes, you should use the manual feed slot and the face-up output tray at the back of the machine. This provides a straight paper path.

Loading Thick Paper and Labels:

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of your paper.

4. Using both hands, insert one sheet of paper or one label sheet into the manual feed slot until its front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in. The printing surface should be facing up.

5. Send the print job from your computer. Change your print preferences in the Print screen before sending.

6. After the printed page comes out from the back of the machine, load the next sheet if needed.

7. Close the back cover when you have finished printing.

Loading Envelopes:

1. Open the machine’s back cover.

2. Pull down the two green levers, one on the left and one on the right side.

3. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover and adjust the guides.

4. Using both hands, insert one envelope into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up.

5. Send the print job from your computer, ensuring the correct envelope size and media type are selected in the print dialog box.

6. After printing, return the two green levers back to their original positions and close the back cover.

When you change the paper you load in the tray, you must also update the settings on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL. Follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Type] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the paper type you are using ([Thin Paper], [Plain Paper], [Thick Paper], or [Recycled Paper]), and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Size] option, and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the paper size you are using ([Letter], [Legal], [A4], etc.), and then press OK.

8. Press Stop/Exit.

You can load documents using either the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for multiple pages or the scanner glass for single pages or special items like books.

Using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF):

The ADF can hold up to 50 pages of standard 20 lb (80 g/m²) paper.

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages of your document well.

3. Load your document into the ADF face up and top edge first.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

IMPORTANT: Do not use curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, or paper-clipped documents in the ADF. Also avoid cardboard, newspaper, or fabric.

Using the Scanner Glass:

Use the scanner glass for single pages, books, or thick documents.

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document face down on the scanner glass, aligning the corner of the page with the upper-left corner of the glass.

3. Close the document cover. If the document is thick, press down gently on the cover.

The BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL has small margins around the edges of the page that cannot be printed or scanned. The exact measurements may vary depending on the paper size and settings.

To cancel a print job on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL, follow this step:

1. Press Stop/Exit on the control panel.

To cancel multiple print jobs at once, press and hold Stop/Exit for about four seconds.

Follow these steps to make a copy:

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Do one of the following:

• Place the document face up in the ADF (recommended for multiple pages).

• Place the document face down on the scanner glass.

3. Press the COPY button.

4. Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want.

5. Press Start.

You can easily copy both sides of an identification card onto one sheet of paper.

1. Place the ID card face down near the upper left corner of the scanner glass. Ensure there is at least 0.16 in. (4.0 mm) of space from the top and left edges.

2. Press the 2 in 1 (ID) Copy button.

3. Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want.

4. Press Start. The machine scans the first side of the card.

5. After the first side is scanned, turn over the identification card.

6. Press Start again to scan the other side. The machine will then print both sides on a single page.

To send a fax from your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL:

1. Place the document you want to fax either face up in the ADF or face down on the scanner glass.

2. Enter the fax number using one of these methods:

• Using the dial pad: Enter the number directly.

• Using One Touch Buttons: Press the button assigned to your contact.

• Using Speed Dial: Press the Speed Dial access button twice, then enter the three-digit Speed Dial code.

3. Press Start.

If you placed the document on the scanner glass, the machine will ask if you want to scan another page. Press ▲ (Yes) to scan the next page, or press ▼ (No) to send the document.

If your BROTHER MFC-L2690DWXL displays an error message, refer to the table below for the cause and recommended action. If the problem persists, contact Brother Customer Service.

If paper is jammed in the back of the machine, follow these steps:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to allow the internal fan to cool the hot parts inside.

2. Open the back cover.

3. Pull the blue tabs at the left and right sides toward you to release the fuser cover.

WARNING: The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

4. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit.

5. Close the fuser cover.

6. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

If you are experiencing print quality issues, check the following table for common problems and their solutions.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Push down the green lock lever on the drum unit and take the old toner cartridge out.

4. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

5. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

6. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back several times. Return the tab to the Home position (▲).

7. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

8. Close the front cover of the machine. Do not turn off the machine until the display returns to Ready Mode.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the old drum unit.

4. Unpack the new drum unit.

5. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until it locks into place.

6. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

7. Close the front cover.

8. After replacing the drum unit, you MUST reset the drum counter.

It is important to reset the drum counter only when you replace the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and the front cover is closed.

2. Hold down OK as you press ▲.

3. Press OK to select [Drum].

4. Press ▲ to reset the drum counter.

1. Press and hold the Power button to turn off the machine.

2. Lift the document cover.

3. Clean the white plastic surface and the main scanner glass underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. In the ADF unit, clean the white bar and the scanner glass strip with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

5. Close the document cover.

6. Press the Power button to turn on the machine.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Machine Info.] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Parts Life] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Toner] or [Drum] option, and then press OK.

5. The LCD will display the approximate remaining life of the selected part.

6. Press Stop/Exit when finished.

You can reset all machine settings back to the settings that were originally set at the factory. Brother strongly recommends performing this operation when you dispose of the machine.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Initial Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Reset] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to choose the [Factory Reset] option, and then press OK.

5. The machine will ask you to confirm. To proceed with the reset, follow the on-screen instructions. The machine will restart automatically after the reset is complete.
