The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW:

The control panel on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW has several buttons with specific functions:

1. One Touch Buttons:

Store and recall up to eight fax and telephone numbers. To access numbers 1-4, press the assigned button. To access numbers 5-8, press and hold Shift while pressing the button.

2. Function Buttons:

Redial/Pause: Dials the last number called. Also inserts a pause when programming numbers.

Hook: Press before dialing to ensure a fax machine answers, then press Start. If in Fax/Tel (F/T) Mode, press Hook to talk if you pick up an external telephone during the F/T ring.

WiFi: Launches the wireless installer on your computer. A solid light means connected; a blinking light means connection is down or in progress.

Resolution (certain models): Changes the fax resolution.

2 in 1 (ID) Copy: Copies both sides of an ID card onto a single page.

2-sided: Copies on both sides of a sheet of paper.

Options: Accesses temporary settings for faxing, scanning, or copying.

3. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD):

Displays messages to help you set up and use the machine.

4. Mode Buttons:

FAX: Switches the machine to Fax Mode.

SCAN: Switches the machine to Scan Mode.

COPY: Switches the machine to Copy Mode.

5. Menu Buttons:

Clear: Deletes entered data or cancels the current setting.

Menu: Accesses the Menu for programming machine settings.

OK: Stores your machine settings.

◄ or ►: Scrolls back or forward through menu selections.

▲ or ▼: Scrolls up or down through menus and options. Also used to change resolution in Fax Mode.

Speed Dial Access: Press to access speed dial numbers.

6. Dial Pad:

Use to dial fax/telephone numbers and enter text or characters.

7. Power On/Off:

Press to turn the machine on. Press and hold to turn it off.

8. Stop/Exit:

Stops an operation or exits from a menu.

9. Start:

Starts sending faxes, copying, or scanning documents.

To access Brother Utilities, which provides a convenient launcher for all Brother applications on your computer, follow the steps for your version of Windows:

Windows 7:

Click Start > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

Windows 8:

Tap or click (Brother Utilities) on the Start screen or the desktop.

Windows 8.1:

Move your mouse to the lower left corner of the Start screen and click the up arrow icon. When the Apps screen appears, tap or click (Brother Utilities).

Windows 10:

Click Start > Brother > Brother Utilities.

After launching the application, select your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW model from the list and choose the operation you want to use.

To uninstall the Brother software and drivers for your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW, follow these steps:

1. Open the Brother Utilities application based on your Windows version:

Windows 7: Click Start > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

Windows 8: Click (Brother Utilities) on the Start screen or desktop.

Windows 8.1: Go to the Apps screen and click (Brother Utilities).

Windows 10: Click Start > Brother > Brother Utilities.

2. Select your model from the drop-down list if it is not already selected.

3. Click Tools in the left navigation bar.

4. Click Uninstall in the Tools section.

5. Follow the instructions in the dialog box to complete the uninstallation.

Follow these steps to correctly load paper into the paper tray of your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the size of the paper you are using. Press the green release levers to slide the guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load the paper in the tray with the printing surface facing down.

5. Ensure the paper stack is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling can cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely back into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap on the output tray to prevent paper from sliding off.

When you load a different size or type of paper, you must also change the Paper Size and Paper Type settings in the machine’s menu.

The manual feed slot is used for printing on special media like envelopes, labels, or single sheets of different paper types. Follow these instructions for printing on plain, thin, recycled, or bond paper:

1. Lift the support flap on the output tray.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of your paper.

4. Using both hands, insert one sheet of paper into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up. Push it in until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

5. Send your print job from the computer. Ensure your print preferences are set correctly before sending.

6. After the page prints, load the next sheet into the manual feed slot. Repeat for each page you need to print.

To print on envelopes with your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW, you must use the manual feed slot and adjust the machine for thicker media:

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. Pull down the two green levers, one on the left and one on the right side.

3. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

4. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the envelope.

5. Using both hands, insert one envelope into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up, until its front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

6. Send the print job from your computer. In the print dialog box, make sure you select the correct Paper Size (e.g., Com-10) and Media Type (e.g., Envelopes).

7. After the printed envelope exits the back of the machine, insert the next envelope. Repeat for each envelope.

8. When you have finished printing, return the two green levers inside the back cover to their original positions.

9. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

To ensure your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW prints correctly, you must match the paper settings on the control panel to the paper loaded in the tray. Follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Type] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the paper type (e.g., Plain Paper, Thick Paper), and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Size] option, and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the paper size (e.g., Letter, Legal, A4), and then press OK.

8. Press Stop/Exit.

Your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW has two methods for loading documents: the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for multiple pages and the scanner glass for single or non-standard pages.

Using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF):

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages of your document well.

3. Stagger the pages and load them face up and top edge first into the ADF.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

The ADF can hold up to 50 pages of standard 20 lb (80 g/m²) paper. Do not use curled, wrinkled, stapled, or paper-clipped documents in the ADF.

Using the Scanner Glass:

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document face down on the scanner glass, aligning the top-left corner of the page with the alignment marks.

3. Close the document cover gently.

To use the scanner glass, the ADF must be empty.

To avoid damage to your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW and ensure proper performance, DO NOT use the following types of paper:

• paper that is highly textured

• paper that is extremely smooth or shiny

• paper that is curled or warped

• paper that is coated or has a chemical finish

• paper that is damaged, creased, or folded

• paper that exceeds the recommended weight specification

• paper with tabs and staples

• paper with letterheads using low-temperature dyes or thermography

• multipart or carbonless paper

• paper designed for inkjet printing

Using these types of paper may cause damage that is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement. Always test paper samples before purchasing in bulk.

To cancel a print job that is currently processing on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW, press the Stop/Exit button on the control panel.

If you need to cancel multiple print jobs that are in the queue, press and hold the Stop/Exit button for about four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality, you can print a test page from your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW by following these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Print Options] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Test Print] option, and then press OK.

5. Press Start. The machine will print a Test Print page.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

To make a copy with your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW, follow these steps:

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Place the document you want to copy:

• Face up in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for single or multiple pages.

• Face down on the scanner glass for a single page.

3. Press the (COPY) button to enter Copy mode.

4. Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want (from 1 to 99).

5. Press Start to begin copying.

You can easily copy both sides of an identification card onto one sheet of paper using the 2 in 1 (ID) Copy feature on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW.

1. Place the ID card face down near the upper left corner of the scanner glass. Ensure there is at least 0.16 in. (4.0 mm) of space from the top and left edges.

2. Press the 2 in 1 (ID) Copy button on the control panel.

3. Use the dial pad to enter the number of copies you want.

4. Press Start. The machine will scan the first side of the card.

5. After the first side is scanned, turn the ID card over.

6. Press Start again to scan the other side. The machine will then print both sides on a single page.

You can change copy settings on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW by pressing the Options button in Copy mode. The available options are:

To send a fax from your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW, follow these steps:

1. Press the (FAX) button on the control panel.

2. Place the document you want to fax:

• Face up in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

• Face down on the scanner glass.

3. Enter the fax number using one of these methods:

• Using the dial pad: Directly enter the number.

• Using One Touch Buttons: Press the button assigned to your contact.

• Using Speed Dial: Press the speed dial access button (looks like a book), then enter the three-digit Speed Dial code.

4. Press Start.

If you placed the document on the scanner glass, the machine will scan the first page. The LCD will then ask if you want to scan another page. Press ▲ for Yes to scan the next page, or press ▼ for No to send the document.

Manual fax transmission allows you to hear the dialing and fax-receiving tones to confirm the connection before sending. Follow these steps on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW:

1. Press the (FAX) button.

2. Load your document.

3. Press Hook and listen for a dial tone.

4. Dial the fax number you want to call.

5. When you hear the high-pitched fax tone from the receiving machine, press Start.

If you are using the scanner glass, the machine will scan the first page. Press ▲ to scan the next page when prompted.

The broadcasting feature on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW lets you send the same fax to multiple fax numbers at once. Numbers must be stored in the Address Book (One Touch or Speed Dial) or entered manually.

1. Press the (FAX) button.

2. Load your document.

3. Enter the first fax number (using One Touch, Speed Dial, or the dial pad), and press OK.

4. Repeat step 3 to enter all the numbers you want to include in the broadcast.

5. After entering all numbers, press Start to begin sending the broadcast fax.

The correct Receive Mode for your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW depends on the devices and telephone services you use on the same line. Here are the available modes:

• Fax Only: Choose this mode if you have a dedicated fax line. The machine automatically answers every call as a fax.

• Fax/Tel: Use this mode if you share the line with a telephone. The machine will automatically receive faxes. For voice calls, it will sound a special F/T ring (a fast pseudo/double-ring) to alert you to pick up the call.

• Manual: Select this if you want to answer every call yourself. You must be present to receive a fax by lifting a handset and pressing the required buttons when you hear fax tones.

• External TAD: This mode is for when you have an external telephone answering device (TAD) on the same line. The TAD will answer all calls. The BROTHER MFC-L2690DW will “listen” for fax tones and take over the call to receive a fax if detected. Otherwise, the caller can leave a voice message on your TAD.

The Fax Journal lists information about the last 200 incoming and outgoing faxes. You can set your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW to print it automatically at set intervals.

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display [Fax], and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display [Report Setting], and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display [Journal Period], and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the interval: [Every 50Faxes], [Every 6Hours], [Every 12Hours], [Every 24Hours], [Every 2Days], [Every 7Days], or [Off]. Press OK.

6. If you chose an interval based on time, you will be prompted to enter a start time for printing. Enter the time using the dial pad and press OK.

7. Press Stop/Exit.

If your wireless LAN report shows a connection failure, check the error code and follow the recommended solutions:

Resetting the network settings will restore all network information, including password and IP address, to the factory defaults. Unplug any interface cables before you begin.

1. Press Menu on the control panel.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Network] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Network Reset] option, and then press OK.

4. The LCD will ask for confirmation. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the network settings.

The machine will restart automatically after the reset is complete.

The “2-sided Disabled” error message appears for one of two reasons:

• The back cover of the machine is not closed completely. To fix this, close the back cover firmly until it locks into the closed position.

• The 2-sided tray is not installed completely. To fix this, remove and then reinstall the 2-sided tray, ensuring it is seated firmly in the machine.

The “Cartridge Error” message indicates that the toner cartridge is not installed correctly. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Open the front cover of the machine.

2. Pull out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

3. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.

4. Re-insert the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until it clicks into place.

5. Put the entire drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

If paper is jammed in the paper tray, follow these steps:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Slowly pull the jammed paper out of the machine. Pulling the paper downward with both hands can make it easier to remove.

3. Remove all paper from the tray. Fan the stack of paper to separate the pages, and then reload it.

4. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark and that the paper guides are set to the correct size.

5. Push the paper tray firmly back into the machine.

If paper is jammed inside the machine, follow these steps carefully:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to allow the internal fan to cool the hot parts.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Carefully remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

4. Pull the jammed paper slowly out of the machine.

5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

A paper jam in the back of the machine is located in the fuser unit, which can be extremely hot. Proceed with caution:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down.

2. Open the back cover.

3. Pull the blue tabs on the left and right sides toward you to release the fuser cover.

4. Using both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit.

5. Close the fuser cover.

6. Close the back cover until it locks into place.

When the LCD displays “Replace Toner,” follow these steps to install a new toner cartridge:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

4. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

5. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

6. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back again several times. Return the tab to the home position (▲).

7. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

8. Close the front cover. Do not turn off the machine until the display returns to Ready Mode.

When the machine indicates it is time to replace the drum unit, follow this procedure:

1. Ensure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Push down the green lock lever and remove the toner cartridge from the old drum unit.

4. Unpack the new drum unit.

5. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

6. Install the new toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

7. Close the front cover.

8. After replacing the drum unit, you MUST reset the drum counter.

After you replace the drum unit with a new one, you must reset the drum counter on your BROTHER MFC-L2690DW. It is important that you only perform this reset when you are replacing the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Close the front cover.

3. Hold down OK as you press ▲.

4. Press OK to select [Drum].

5. Press ▲ to reset the drum counter.

To prevent streaks or lines on your scanned documents, clean the scanner components regularly.

1. Turn off the machine by pressing and holding the power button.

2. Lift the document cover.

3. Clean the white plastic surface (2) and the large scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. In the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

5. Close the document cover.

6. Press the power button to turn the machine back on.

When you need to enter text for settings like the Station ID, use the control panel buttons. The characters available may differ depending on the operation.

Using the Dial Pad (for MFC models):

• Press the appropriate dial pad button repeatedly to cycle through the characters assigned to that key. For example, pressing the ‘2’ key cycles through ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’, ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, and ‘2’.

• Inserting Spaces: Press the right arrow key (►) once between numbers or twice between characters in a name.

• Making Corrections: Use the left (◄) or right (►) arrow keys to move the cursor to an incorrect character, and then press Clear to delete it.

• Repeating Letters: To enter a letter on the same key as the previous one, press the right arrow key (►) to move the cursor before pressing the key again.

• Special Symbols: Press the *, #, or 0 key and use the arrow keys to navigate to the symbol you want, then press OK.

Using the LCD Screen (for DCP models):

• Use the ▲ or ▼ arrow keys to scroll through the list of available characters: 0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ(space)!”#$%&'()*+,-./:;<=>?@[]^_

• Press OK to select the desired character.

• Press Clear to delete incorrect characters.
