How do I unpack the Brother machine?

Remove the protective tape and film covering the machine. You should also save all packing materials and the box in case you must ship your machine.

What type of USB cable is recommended for this machine?

We recommend using a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) that is no more than 6 feet (2 meters) long. Note that you must purchase the correct interface cable for the interface you want to use, although a USB cable is included with some models.


How do I load paper into the paper tray?

1. Open the output paper tray cover.

2. Adjust the paper guides to fit the paper size.

3. Fan the paper well and load it in the tray.

4. Close the output paper tray cover, and then slowly push the tray completely into the machine.

Additionally, pull out the paper support and unfold the paper support flap so that the printed pages do not fall.

How can I adjust the control panel?

You can adjust the control panel angle to read the LCD more easily.


How do I set the date and time on the machine?

Follow the prompts displayed on the LCD to set the date and time after connecting the power cord.


How do I install the starter ink cartridges?

1. Open the ink cartridge cover and remove the orange protective part from the machine.

2. Before inserting the black ink cartridge, quickly shake it horizontally 15 times as shown in the guide.

3. Follow the steps on the LCD to unpack and install all the ink cartridges. The machine will prepare the ink tube system for printing.


What should I do with the orange protective part after removing it from the ink cartridge area?

Do not throw away the orange protective part. You will need it if you transport the machine.


How do I configure the machine settings after the initial cleaning process?

When the machine has finished the initial cleaning process, follow the steps on the LCD to configure the machine settings. This includes:

– Check print quality

– Set Firmware Update defaults

– Print the installation sheet


How do I connect the telephone line cord for faxing?

Connect the telephone line cord to the appropriate port on the machine. If you are not using your machine as a fax, you can skip this step and proceed to step 8 in the Quick Setup Guide. For more information on using the fax feature, see the Online User’s Guide.


How do I select the language on the machine if needed?

1. Press Settings.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the following:

a. Select [Initial Setup], and then press OK.

b. Select [Local Language], and then press OK.

c. Select your language, and then press OK.

3. Press Stop/Exit.


How do I select the correct Receive Mode for faxes?

If you are using your machine as a fax:

1. Press Settings.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the following:

a. Select [Fax], and then press OK.

b. Select [Set Receive], and then press OK.

c. Select [Receive Mode], and then press OK.

d. Select your Receive Mode, and then press OK.

3. Press Stop/Exit.

How do I set the Station ID for faxes?

To store your name and fax number so the machine prints it on all outgoing fax pages:

1. Press Settings.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the following:

a. Select [Initial Setup], and then press OK.

b. Select [Station ID], and then press OK.

c. Select [Fax], and then press OK.

3. Enter your fax number (up to 20 digits), and then press OK.

4. Enter your name (up to 20 characters), and then press OK.

5. Press Stop/Exit.

How do I check for the latest firmware for my Brother machine?

Brother regularly updates firmware to add features and apply bug fixes. To check for the latest firmware, visit support.brother.com/up4.


How do I connect my computer to the Brother machine?

1. You can either put the installation disc into your CD/DVD drive or download the Full Driver & Software Package from the Brother support website (support.brother.com/windows for Windows®, support.brother.com/mac for Mac).

2. If you are using a recently released operating system on your computer, visit the above websites for updated driver and software information.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts from the installation software.

For Windows®: If the Brother screen does not appear automatically after inserting the disc, go to Computer (My Computer/This PC). Double-click the CD/DVD-ROM icon, and then double-click start.exe.

For Mac: For full driver functionality, it is recommended to choose the CUPS driver when adding a printer.

For USB Connection: Locate the correct port inside the machine as shown in the guide and connect the USB cable.


What should I do if I can’t connect my computer via a wireless network?

1. Restart your wireless access point/router (if possible).

2. If it’s still not successful, proceed to the alternative wireless setup instructions (referred to as step 13 in the Quick Setup Guide).


What should I do if I can’t connect my computer via a USB connection?

1. Disconnect the USB cable.

2. Restart your machine and computer.

3. Try connecting the computer again by following the connection instructions (referred to as step 12 in the Quick Setup Guide).

4. If still not successful, visit support.brother.com for FAQs and Troubleshooting.


How do I perform an alternative wireless setup?

1. First, find your SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password) on your wireless access point/router. You should write this information down. The Quick Setup Guide provides a space for this, typically for:

SSID (Network Name): [Your Network Name]
Network Key (Password): [Your Password]

If you cannot find this information, ask your network administrator or wireless access point/router manufacturer.

2. Go to your machine, and press the WiFi button on the control panel.

3. Press OK to select [Setup Wizard].

4. When the [Enable WLAN?] message appears on the LCD, press ▲ to select Yes.

5. Select the SSID (Network Name) for your access point/router from the list displayed on the machine’s LCD and then enter the Network Key (Password).

When the wireless setup is successful, the LCD displays [Connected].

If setup is not successful, restart your Brother machine and your wireless access point/router, and repeat these alternative wireless setup steps.

Once connected, if you are setting up a computer, proceed to install software (referred to as step 12 in the Quick Setup Guide). If setting up a mobile device, proceed to install apps (referred to as step 14 in the Quick Setup Guide).

Note: Even if you do not have a wireless access point/router, you can connect your device and your machine directly. For additional wireless network support, go to support.brother.com/wireless-support.


How can I find my SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password) for wireless setup?

Find your SSID (Network Name) and Network Key (Password) on your wireless access point/router. If you cannot find this information, ask your network administrator or wireless access point/router manufacturer.

How can I print or scan using my mobile device?

Your mobile device must be connected to the same wireless network as your Brother machine. You have several options:

– For iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch): AirPrint is available. You do not need to download any software to use AirPrint. For more information, see the Online User’s Guide.

– For Android™ devices: Download and install the Mopria® Print Service app from Google Play™.

– Brother iPrint&Scan app: Download and install the free application Brother iPrint&Scan from a mobile application store, such as the App Store, Google Play™, or Microsoft® Store.

– Brother SupportCenter app: For the latest support information for your Brother product, visit the App Store or Google Play™ to download the Brother SupportCenter mobile app.
