The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the User’s Guide for the BROTHER HL-L2395DW:

Brother Utilities is an application launcher that offers convenient access to all Brother applications installed on your computer. To access it, follow these steps:

1. Do one of the following based on your Windows version:

Windows 7:

Click (Start) > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

Windows 8:

Tap or click (Brother Utilities) either on the Start screen or the desktop.

Windows 8.1:

Move your mouse to the lower left corner of the Start screen and click the up arrow (if you are using a touch-based device, swipe up from the bottom of the Start screen to bring up the Apps screen). When the Apps screen appears, tap or click (Brother Utilities).

Windows 10:

Click Start > Brother > Brother Utilities.

2. Select your machine from the list.

3. Choose the operation you want to use from the utility window.

To uninstall the Brother software and drivers, follow these steps:

1. Open Brother Utilities. The steps vary by Windows version:

Windows 7: Click (Start) > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

Windows 8: Tap or click (Brother Utilities) on the Start screen or desktop.

Windows 8.1: Go to the Apps screen and tap or click (Brother Utilities).

Windows 10: Click Start > Brother > Brother Utilities.

2. Select your model from the drop-down list (if it is not already selected).

3. Click Tools in the left navigation bar.

4. Click Uninstall in the Tools section of Brother Utilities.

5. Follow the instructions in the dialog box to uninstall the software and drivers.

Follow these steps to load paper into the paper tray:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper you are using. Press the green release levers to slide the guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling the tray can cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely back into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

Note: When you load a different size and type of paper in the tray, you must also change the Paper Size and Paper Type settings in the machine or on your computer.

To use the manual feed slot for printing on special media like plain paper, thin paper, recycled paper, and bond paper:

1. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face-down output tray.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper.

4. Using both hands, put one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull it in, let go.

Important:

Load paper into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up.

Ensure the paper is straight and correctly positioned to avoid skewed printouts or jams.

5. Send your print job to the machine from your computer. Change your print preferences in the Print screen before sending the job.

6. After the printed page comes out, load the next sheet of paper in the manual feed slot. Repeat for each page you want to print.

When printing on thick paper or labels, use the straight paper path by opening the back cover.

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper.

4. Using both hands, insert one sheet of paper or one label sheet into the manual feed slot until its front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

Important:

Load the paper with the printing surface facing up.

Do not put more than one sheet at a time, as it may cause a jam.

5. Send your print job to the machine. Remember to change the paper settings in the print dialog box on your computer.

6. After the printed page comes out from the back of the machine, load the next sheet.

7. When finished, close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

To print on envelopes, follow these steps:

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. Pull down the two green levers, one on the left and one on the right side.

3. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

4. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the envelope.

5. Using both hands, put one envelope in the manual feed slot until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

Important:

Load the envelope with the printing surface facing up.

Do not put more than one envelope in the slot at a time.

6. Send your print job to the machine. Before sending, change your print preferences in the Print dialog box to the correct envelope settings.

Envelope Settings in Print Dialog:

Paper Size: Com-10, DL, C5, Monarch

Media Type: Envelopes, Env. Thick, Env. Thin

7. After the printed envelope comes out, insert the next one. Repeat for each envelope.

8. When you have finished printing, return the two green levers to their original positions.

9. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

When you change the paper in the tray, you must also update the settings on the machine. The steps vary depending on your model.

For BROTHER HL-L2395DW (Touchscreen models):

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [General Setup] > [Tray Setting] > [Paper Type].

2. Press the up or down arrow to display the paper type you want ([Thin], [Plain Paper], [Thick], [Thicker] or [Recycled Paper]), and then press the option.

3. Press [Paper Size].

4. Press the up or down arrow to display the paper size you want ([A4], [Letter], [A5], etc.), and then press the option.

5. Press the Home button.

To get the best print quality, we recommend using the paper listed in the table.

Use the ADF for copying or scanning multiple-page documents.

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages of your document well.

3. Stagger the pages and load the document face up and top edge first into the ADF.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

ADF Document Specifications:

Capacity: Up to 50 pages (standard 20 lb paper)

Length: 5.8 to 14.0 in. (147.3 to 355.6 mm)

Width: 4.1 to 8.5 in. (105 to 215.9 mm)

Weight: 16 to 28 lb (60 to 105 g/m²)

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, or paper-clipped. Do not use cardboard, newspaper, or fabric.

Use the scanner glass to fax, copy, or scan one page at a time. The ADF must be empty to use the scanner glass.

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Align the corner of the page with the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is thick, like a book, press gently on the cover.

Scanner Glass Document Specifications:

Length: Up to 11.8 in. (300 mm)

Width: Up to 8.5 in. (215.9 mm)

Weight: Up to 4.4 lb (2 kg)

The table below shows the maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the paper. Your output will not reflect anything in these areas.

Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your machine. Using these types of paper is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

DO NOT use paper:

that is highly textured

that is extremely smooth or shiny

that is curled or warped

that is coated or has a chemical finish

that is damaged, creased or folded

that exceeds the recommended weight specification in this guide

with tabs and staples

with letterheads using low-temperature dyes or thermography

that is multipart or carbonless

that is designed for inkjet printing (DO NOT use inkjet paper)

1. Select the print command in your application.

2. Select Brother HL-L2395DW, and then click the printing properties or preferences button.

3. In the printer driver window, ensure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

4. Click the Paper Size drop-down list and select your paper size.

5. In the Orientation field, select Portrait or Landscape.

6. Type the number of copies (1-999) you want in the Copies field.

7. Click the Media Type drop-down list and select the type of paper you are using.

8. To print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper, click the Multiple Page drop-down list and select your options.

9. Change other printer settings as needed.

10. Click OK.

11. Complete your print operation in your application.

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. From an application, such as Apple TextEdit, click the File menu, and then select Print.

3. Select Brother HL-L2395DW.

4. Type the number of copies you want in the Copies field.

5. Click the Paper Size pop-up menu, and then select your paper size.

6. Select the Orientation option that matches the way you want the document to print.

7. Click the application pop-up menu, and then select Print Settings.

8. Click the Media Type pop-up menu, and then select the type of paper you are using.

9. Change other printer settings, if needed.

10. Click Print.

To cancel a print job on the BROTHER HL-L2395DW, press the Cancel button on the control panel. To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold the Cancel button for about four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality, you can print a test page to help diagnose the issue.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Printer] > [Print Options] > [Test Print].

2. Press [Yes].

3. Press the Home button.

The machine will print a Test Print page.

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Place the document you want to copy:

Place the document face up in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

OR

Place the document face down on the scanner glass.

3. Press [Copy] on the touchscreen.

4. To enter the number of copies, do one of the following:

Press [-] or [+] on the LCD.

Use the dial pad on the control panel.

Press the number of copies field to display a numeric keypad on the LCD, enter the number, and then press [OK].

5. Press [Start].

Always remove any remaining paper from the paper tray and straighten the stack before reloading to prevent multiple sheets from feeding at once. The location of the jam will be indicated on your machine’s control panel or the Status Monitor.

Paper Jam in the Paper Tray:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Slowly pull out the jammed paper. Pulling downward can make it easier to remove.

3. Fan the paper stack, check that it is below the maximum paper mark, and put the tray firmly back in the machine.

Paper Jam in the Output Paper Tray:

1. Use both hands to open the scanner.

2. Remove the jammed paper.

3. Push the scanner down with both hands to close it.

Paper Jam in the Back of the Machine:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down.

2. Open the back cover.

3. Pull the blue tabs at the left and right sides toward you to release the fuser cover.

4. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit.

5. Close the fuser cover and then close the back cover.

Paper Jam inside the Machine:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

4. Pull out the jammed paper slowly.

5. Re-install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly and close the front cover.

Paper Jam in the 2-sided Tray:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to cool down.

2. Pull the paper tray completely out.

3. At the back of the machine, pull the 2-sided tray completely out.

4. Pull the jammed paper out of the machine or the 2-sided tray.

5. If paper is not caught in the tray, open the back cover and gently pull the paper out.

6. Close the back cover, and re-insert the 2-sided tray and then the paper tray.

If you have a print quality problem, print a test page first. If the test page looks good, the issue is likely with your document or connections. If the test page has a quality problem, check the following recommendations:

Resetting the print server to its default factory settings will reset all network information, including the password and IP address.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Network] > [Network Reset].

2. A confirmation message will be displayed: [Machine will reboot after resetting. Press [OK] for 2 seconds to confirm.].

3. Press and hold [OK] for two seconds to confirm.

The machine will restart, and the network settings will be restored to their factory defaults.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

4. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

5. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

6. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

7. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back several times.

8. Be sure to return the green tab to the Home position (▲).

9. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

10. Close the front cover.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

4. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

5. Unpack the new drum unit.

6. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until you hear it lock into place. Ensure it is inserted correctly to prevent it from separating.

7. Install the new toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

8. Close the front cover.

9. Reset the drum counter after replacing the drum unit.

When you replace the drum unit with a new one, you must reset the drum counter. Do not reset the drum counter unless you are replacing the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and the front cover is closed.

2. Press the Cancel (X) button to clear any error message on the screen.

3. Press and hold the Toner icon for five seconds.

4. Press [Drum].

5. Press [Yes] to reset the drum counter.

6. Press the Home button.

1. Press and hold the Power button to turn off the machine.

2. Lift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and the large scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

3. In the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) unit, clean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. Close the document cover.

5. Press the Power button to turn on the machine.

If you have print quality problems, such as vertical streaks, or if the control panel displays a [Drum !] status, clean the corona wire.

1. Open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

3. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

4. Be sure to return the tab to the Home position (▲). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. If it is not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover of the machine.

You can check the approximate remaining life of the consumable parts.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Machine Info.] > [Parts Life].

2. The LCD displays the approximate remaining drum life. To see the toner life, press the Toner icon on the LCD.

3. Press the Home button to exit.

Before you begin, you will need to know your wireless network settings (SSID and Network Key/password).

1. Write down your current wireless network settings.

Network Name (SSID):

Network Key (Password):

2. On the machine’s control panel, press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Network] > [WLAN] > [Setup Wizard].

3. When [Switch Network interface to wireless?] appears, press [Yes]. This will start the wireless setup wizard.

4. The machine will search for available networks and display a list of SSIDs. If a list is displayed, press the up or down arrow to select the SSID you want to connect to, and then press the SSID name.

5. Press [OK].

6. If the network requires a Network Key, enter the key you wrote down. When you have entered all the characters, press [OK].

7. The machine attempts to connect to the wireless network. If successful, the LCD displays [Connected].

When you need to enter text on your BROTHER HL-L2395DW, a keyboard appears on the LCD.

Using the Touchscreen Keyboard:

Press the character you want to enter.

Press the A 1 @ button to cycle between letters, numbers, and special characters.

Press the ↑aA button to cycle between lowercase and uppercase letters.

To move the cursor to the left or right, press the ◀ or ▶ arrows.

To enter a space, press [Space].

Making Corrections:

If you entered a character incorrectly, press ◀ or ▶ to move the cursor to the incorrect character and press the backspace key (marked with an X). Then enter the correct character.

Press the backspace key for each character you want to erase, or press and hold it to erase all characters.

When it is time to replace supplies, an error message will appear. The supply order numbers for your BROTHER HL-L2395DW are as follows:

Note: Approximate cartridge yield is declared in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752, based on A4/Letter single-sided pages. The number of pages for the drum unit is based on 1 page per job.
