The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user guide for your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

Before attempting any printing or scanning operation with your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, confirm the following:

• Make sure you have installed the Brother software and drivers.

• For USB or network cable users: Make sure the interface cable is physically secure.

If your computer is protected by a firewall and you are unable to network print or network scan with your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, you may need to configure the firewall settings. If you are using the Windows® Firewall and you installed the drivers using the steps in the installer, the necessary firewall settings have been already set. If you are using any other personal firewall software, refer to the User’s Guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

The control panel of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW has several key components:

1. Touchscreen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): Access menus and options by pressing them on the touchscreen.

2. Menu Buttons:

• (Back): Press to go back to the previous menu.

• (Home): Press to return to the Main Home screen.

• (Cancel): Press to cancel an operation.

3. Dial Pad (Numerical buttons): Press the Numerical buttons to enter the number of copies.

4. LED Power Indicator: The LED lights up depending on the machine’s power status.

5. Power On/Off:

• Turn the machine on by pressing the power button.

• Turn the machine off by pressing and holding down the power button. The LCD displays [Shutting Down] for a few seconds before going off.

Press your finger on the LCD to operate your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW. To display and access all the options, swipe left, right, up, down or press the arrow icons on the LCD to scroll through them.

The following steps explain how to change a machine setting. In this example, the LCD Backlight setting is changed from [Light] to [Med].

IMPORTANT: DO NOT press the LCD with a sharp object, such as a pen or stylus. It may damage the machine.

NOTE: DO NOT touch the LCD immediately after plugging in the power cord or turning on the machine. Doing this may cause an error.

1. Press [Settings].

2. Press [All Settings].

3. Swipe up or down or press the up or down arrow to display the [General Setup] option, and then press [General Setup].

4. Swipe up or down or press the up or down arrow to display the [LCD Settings] option, and then press [LCD Settings].

5. Press [Backlight].

6. Press [Med].

7. Press the Home icon.

You can change the LCD on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW to display a specific Home screen or Shortcut screen. When the machine is idle or you press the Home button, the touchscreen will return to the screen you set.

1. Press [Settings] > [Screen Settings] > [Main Home Screen].

2. Swipe up or down or press the up or down arrow to display the screen settings, and then press the setting you want.

3. Press the Home button.

The machine will go to your chosen screen.

Brother Utilities is an application launcher that offers convenient access to all Brother applications installed on your computer. To access it:

1. Do one of the following based on your Windows version:

• (Windows® 7): Click (Start) > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

• (Windows® 8): Tap or click (Brother Utilities) either on the Start screen or the desktop.

• (Windows® 8.1): Move your mouse to the lower left corner of the Start screen and click the down arrow (if you are using a touch-based device, swipe up from the bottom of the Start screen to bring up the Apps screen). When the Apps screen appears, tap or click (Brother Utilities).

• (Windows® 10): Click Start Menu > Brother > Brother Utilities.

2. Select your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW machine (where XXXX is the name of your model).

3. Choose the operation you want to use.

To uninstall the software and drivers for your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Do one of the following based on your Windows version:

• (Windows® 7): Click (Start) > All Programs > Brother > Brother Utilities.

• (Windows® 8): Tap or click (Brother Utilities) either on the Start screen or the desktop.

• (Windows® 8.1): Move your mouse to the lower left corner of the Start screen and click the down arrow (if you are using a touch-based device, swipe up from the bottom of the Start screen to bring up the Apps screen). When the Apps screen appears, tap or click (Brother Utilities).

• (Windows® 10): Click Start Menu > Brother > Brother Utilities.

2. Click the drop-down list, and then select your model name (if not already selected). Click Tools in the left navigation bar, and then click Uninstall.

3. Follow the instructions in the dialog box to uninstall the software and drivers.

To load paper into the paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, follow these steps:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well.

4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▾▾▾). Overfilling the paper tray will cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

To load paper into the manual feed slot of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, use the following procedure:

1. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face down output tray.

2. Open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper you are using.

4. Using both hands, place one sheet of paper in the manual feed slot until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull it in, let go.

• Load paper into the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up.

• Make sure the paper is straight and in the correct position. If it is not, the paper may not be fed correctly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam.

5. Send your print job to the machine. Change your print preferences in the Print screen before sending the print job from your computer.

6. After the printed page comes out from the machine, load the next sheet of paper in the manual feed slot. Repeat for each page that you want to print.

When you change the size and type of the paper you load in the tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, you must also change the settings on the LCD.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [General Setup] > [Tray Setting] > [Paper Type].

2. Press the option you want.

3. Swipe up or down or press the up or down arrows to display the paper type options, and then press the option you want.

4. Press the Back button.

5. Press [Paper Size].

6. Press the option you want.

7. Swipe up or down or press the up or down arrows to display the paper size options, and then press the option you want.

8. Press the Home button.

Use the ADF on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW when copying or scanning multiple-page, standard-sized documents.

• The ADF can hold up to 50 pages and feed each sheet individually.

• Use standard 80 g/m² paper.

• Make sure documents with correction fluid or written in ink are completely dry.

IMPORTANT:

• DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, paper-clipped, pasted, or taped.

• DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper, or fabric.

• To avoid damaging your machine while using the ADF, DO NOT pull on the document while it is feeding.

Document Sizes Supported:

• Length: 147.3 mm to 355.6 mm

• Width: 105 mm to 215.9 mm

• Weight: 60 to 105 g/m²

Steps to load documents:

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages well.

3. Stagger the pages of your document and load it face up and top edge first, into the ADF.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

Use the scanner glass of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW to copy or scan one page at a time. To use the scanner glass, the ADF must be empty.

Document Sizes Supported:

• Length: Up to 300 mm

• Width: Up to 215.9 mm

• Weight: 2 kg

Steps to load a document:

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Place the corner of the page in the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is a book or is thick, gently press on the document cover.

The BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW has maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the paper. Do not attempt to scan, copy, or print into these areas; your output will not reflect anything in these areas.

Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW. For best performance, always test paper samples before purchasing them.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use paper that:

• is highly textured

• is extremely smooth or shiny

• is curled or warped

• is coated or has a chemical finish

• is damaged, creased or folded

• exceeds the recommended weight specification in this guide

• has tabs and staples

• has letterheads using low temperature dyes or thermography

• is multipart or carbonless

• is designed for inkjet printing

Using any of these types of paper may damage your machine. This damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

To cancel a print job on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, press the Cancel button (X icon). To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold the Cancel button for about four seconds.

If there are problems with print quality on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, follow these instructions to do a test print:

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Printer] > [Print Options] > [Test Print].

2. Press [Yes].

3. Press the Home button.

You can send scanned photos or graphics directly to your computer using the Scan button on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW. To make permanent changes to scan settings, use the ControlCenter4 software.

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Scan] > [to PC] > [to Image].

3. If the machine is connected over the network, select the computer name you want to send data.

4. Do one of the following:

• To change the scan settings, press [Options], and then go to the next step.

• To use the default scan settings, press [Start]. The machine starts scanning. If using the scanner glass, follow the touchscreen instructions to complete the job.

5. To scan both sides of a document (MFC-L3770CDW only): Press [2-sided Scan] and select the document type.

6. Select the scan settings you want to change, such as [Resolution], [File Type], [Scan Type], etc.

7. Press [Start]. The machine starts scanning.

To scan documents and save them to a folder on your computer as PDF files from your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Scan] > [to PC] > [to File].

3. If the machine is connected over the network, select the computer name you want to send data.

4. Do one of the following:

• To change the scan settings, press [Options], and then go to the next step.

• To use the default scan settings, press [Start]. The machine starts scanning.

5. Select the scan settings you want to change from the available options.

6. Press [Start]. The machine starts scanning. If using the scanner glass, follow the touchscreen instructions to complete the job.

To copy a document on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Make sure you have loaded the correct size paper in the paper tray.

2. Do one of the following:

• Place the document face up in the ADF. (If you are copying multiple pages, we recommend using the ADF.)

• Place the document face down on the scanner glass.

3. Press [Copy]. The LCD displays the copy settings.

4. Change the copy settings, if needed. You can change the number of copies, or press [Options] to change other settings like density, quality, etc.

5. Press [Colour Start] or [Mono Start].

To select an enlargement or reduction ratio to resize your copied data on the BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Copy].

3. Enter the number of copies.

4. Press [Options] > [Enlarge/Reduce].

5. Swipe up or down or press the arrow keys to display the available options, and then press the option you want.

6. Do one of the following:

• If you select [Enlarge] or [Reduce], press the enlargement or reduction ratio you want to use.

• If you select [Custom(25-400%)], press the backspace icon to erase the displayed percentage, or press the right arrow to move the cursor, and then enter an enlargement or reduction ratio from [25] to [400]. Press [OK].

• If you selected [100%], go to the next step.

7. When finished, press [OK] (if displayed).

8. Press [Colour Start] or [Mono Start].

The N-in-1 copy feature on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW saves paper by copying two or four pages of your document onto one page of the copy.

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Copy].

3. Enter the number of copies.

4. Press [Options] > [Page Layout].

5. Swipe up or down to display the options, and then press the option you want (e.g., 2in1(Portrait)).

6. When finished, press [OK] (if displayed).

7. Press [Colour Start] or [Mono Start].

8. If you are using the scanner glass, repeat the following steps for each page of the document:

• Place the next page on the scanner glass, and then press [Continue] to scan the page.

• After scanning all the pages, press [Finish].

To sort multiple copies so that pages will be stacked in order (1, 2, 3, and so on) on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Copy].

3. Enter the number of copies.

4. Press [Options] > [Stack/Sort] > [Sort].

5. When finished, press [OK] (if displayed).

6. Press [Colour Start] or [Mono Start].

If you are using the scanner glass, place the next page on the scanner glass and press [Continue] to scan it. After scanning all pages, press [Finish].

To copy an ID card on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Place your identification card face down near the upper left corner of the scanner glass. The distance from the top and left edges should be 4.0 mm or greater.

2. Press [Copy].

3. Press the right arrow on the touchscreen, and then select [2in1(ID)].

4. Enter the number of copies.

5. Press [Colour Start] or [Mono Start]. The machine scans one side of the identification card.

6. After the machine has scanned the first side, turn over the identification card.

7. Press [Continue] to scan the other side.

You can reduce paper usage by copying onto both sides of the paper with your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW. This feature works with A4 sized paper.

1. Load your document.

2. Press [Copy].

3. Enter the number of copies.

4. Press [Options] > [2-sided Copy].

5. Do one of the following:

• To make 2-sided copies from a 1-sided document, follow these steps:

a. To change the layout options, press [Layout], and then press [Long Edge Flip] or [Short Edge Flip].

b. Press [1-sided⇒2-sided].

6. When finished, press [OK] (if displayed).

7. Press [Colour Start] or [Mono Start].

8. If you are using the scanner glass, place the next page on the scanner glass, and then press [Continue] to scan the page. After scanning all the pages, press [Finish].

If there is a paper jam in the paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, follow these steps:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Slowly pull out the jammed paper. Pulling the jammed paper downward using both hands allows you to remove the paper more easily.

3. Fan the stack of paper to prevent further jams, and slide the paper guides to fit the paper size.

4. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▾▾▾).

5. Put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.

When the paper is jammed in the output paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, follow these steps:

1. Use both hands to open the scanner.

2. Remove the paper.

3. Push the scanner down with both hands to close it.

If there is a jam inside your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, follow these steps:

1. Leave the machine turned on but do not use it for 10 minutes to allow its internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.

2. Open the top cover until it locks in the open position.

WARNING: The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

3. Remove all of the toner cartridge and drum unit assemblies.

CAUTION: We recommend placing the toner cartridge and drum unit assemblies on a clean, flat surface with disposable paper underneath it in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.

IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration.

4. Gently remove the jammed paper slowly.

5. Reinsert each toner cartridge and drum unit assembly into the machine. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge colour to the same colour label on the machine for all four toner cartridge and drum unit assemblies.

6. Close the machine’s top cover.

If there is a paper jam underneath the paper tray of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, follow these steps:

1. Leave the machine turned on but do not use it for 10 minutes to allow its internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.

2. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

3. Make sure the jammed paper does not remain inside the machine.

4. If paper is not jammed inside the machine, remove the paper from the paper tray, flip it over, and check underneath the paper tray.

5. If the paper is not jammed in the paper tray, open the back cover.

WARNING: HOT SURFACE. The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

6. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out of the back of the machine.

7. Close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

8. Put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.

If you have a print quality problem with your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, first print a test page. If the printout looks good, the problem is likely not the machine. If the test page has a quality problem, check the following examples and recommendations:

If your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW displays an error message, refer to the following table for the cause and recommended action. This table covers the most common messages.

To reset your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW to its original factory settings, which is recommended when you dispose of the machine:

• The network settings, security settings, and address book data will not be reset by the [Machine Reset] option. Use [Factory Reset] to erase all personal data.

• Unplug the interface cable before choosing a reset function.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Initial Setup] > [Reset].

2. Swipe up or down to display the type of reset functions, and then press [Factory Reset].

3. A confirmation message “[Machine will reboot after resetting. Press [OK] for 2 seconds to confirm.]” appears. Press and hold [OK] for two seconds to confirm.

The machine will restart.

Clean the outside and inside of your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When replacing parts, clean the inside of the machine.

WARNING: DO NOT use flammable substances, any type of spray, or an organic solvent/liquid containing alcohol or ammonia to clean the product. Doing so could cause a fire. Use only a dry, lint-free cloth.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use isopropyl alcohol on the control panel. To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustrations on the Toner Cartridge, Drum Unit, Belt Unit, and Waste Toner Box.

To clean the scanner on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW:

1. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off.

2. Lift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.

3. In the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) underneath it with a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. Close the document cover.

5. Press the power button to turn the machine on.

When you need to enter text on your BROTHER DCP-L3550CDW, a keyboard appears on the LCD. The characters and keyboard layout may differ depending on your country and the operation you perform.

• Press the ‘A 1 @’ key to cycle between letters, numbers, and special characters.

• Press the ‘↑aA’ key to cycle between lowercase and uppercase letters.

• To move the cursor to the left or right, press the left or right arrow keys.

Inserting spaces:

• To enter a space, press [Space] or the right arrow key.

Making corrections:

• If you entered a character incorrectly, use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the incorrect character, press the backspace key (X icon), and then enter the correct character.

• To insert a character, move the cursor to the correct place, and then enter the character.

• Press the backspace key for each character you want to erase, or press and hold it to erase all the characters.
