When using your BLACK+DECKER BWAC05MWTB, basic safety precautions should be followed, including the following:

1. To reduce risk of injury, read all instructions before using this appliance.

2. The air conditioner must be connected to a proper electrical outlet with the correct electrical supply.

3. Proper grounding must be ensured to reduce the risk of shock and fire. DO NOT CUT OR REMOVE THE GROUNDING PRONG. If you do not have a three-prong electric receptacle outlet in the wall, have a certified electrician install the proper receptacle. The wall receptacle MUST be properly grounded.

4. Do not operate the air conditioner if the power cord is frayed or otherwise damaged. Avoid using it if there are any cracks or abrasion damage along the length, plug connector or if the unit malfunctions or is damaged in any manner.

5. DO NOT USE AN ADAPTER OR AN EXTENSION CORD.

6. Do not block airflow around the air conditioner.

7. Always unplug the air conditioner before servicing it or moving it.

8. Do not install or use the air conditioner in any area where the atmosphere contains combustible gases or where the atmosphere is oily or sulphurous. Avoid any chemical coming in contact with your air conditioner.

9. Do not place any object on the top of the unit.

10. Do not use the air conditioner near a bathtub, shower or wash basin.

11. This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience & knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.

12. Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

13. If the SUPPLY CORD is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard.

14. The air conditioner shall be installed in accordance with national wiring regulations.

In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. The appliance must be connected to a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

The appliance is for use on a nominal 120V circuit and should be connected to a grounding outlet that looks like the one illustrated in the manual. The use of a temporary adaptor is not recommended. Do not modify the plug connected to the appliance; if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

Your BLACK+DECKER BWAC05MWTB air conditioner is equipped with an LCDI (Leakage Current Detection and Interruption) power cord. The test and reset buttons are used to check if the plug is functioning properly. Test the LCDI before each use.

To test the plug:

1. Plug the power cord into a grounded 3-prong outlet.

2. Press RESET (on some units a green light will turn on).

3. Press the TEST button; the circuit should trip and cut all power to the air conditioner (on some units the green light may turn off).

4. Press the RESET button for use. You will hear a click and the A/C is ready for use.

5. The power supply cord must be replaced if it fails to trip when the TEST button is pressed and the unit fails to reset.

NOTES:

• The RESET button must be engaged for proper use.

• Do not use the power supply cord as an ON/OFF switch. The power supply cord is designed as a protective device.

• A damaged power supply cord must be replaced with a new power supply cord.

To prevent injury and property damage, follow these guidelines:

ALWAYS DO THIS:

• Use your air conditioner where it is protected from moisture (e.g., condensation, splashed water). Unplug immediately if it falls into water.

• Always transport your air conditioner in a vertical position and stand on a stable, level surface during use.

• Turn off the product when not in use.

• Always contact a qualified person for repairs. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be repaired by a qualified technician.

• Keep an air path of at least 12 inches around the unit from walls, furniture, and curtains.

• If the air conditioner is knocked over, turn it off and unplug it immediately.

• Always use the switch on the control panel to start or shut off the unit.

NEVER DO THIS:

• Do not operate in a wet room such as a bathroom or laundry room.

• Do not touch the unit with wet or damp hands or when barefoot.

• Do not press the buttons on the control panel with anything other than your fingers.

• Do not remove any fixed covers. Never use if it is not working properly, or if it has been dropped or damaged.

• Never use the plug to start and stop the unit.

• Do not cover or obstruct the inlet or outlet grilles.

• Do not use hazardous chemicals or use the unit in the presence of inflammable substances like alcohol, insecticides, gasoline, etc.

• Do not allow children to operate the unit unsupervised.

• Do not use this product for functions other than those described in the instruction manual.

• Use the unit in the recommended room size: 5,000 BTU for up to 150 sq. ft.

• Locate the unit where furniture cannot obstruct the air flow.

• Keep blinds/curtains drawn.

• Keep the filters clean.

• Keep doors and windows closed to keep cool air in and warm air out.

A Phillips head screwdriver is needed for assembly.

• The air conditioner is designed to be installed in a standard double-hung window with a window width between 23″ and 34” (584mm – 863mm).

• The Lower Sash (the lower part of the window that moves up and down) must allow for 14.5″ (368mm) of vertical clearance when open.

• All supporting parts must be secured to firm wood, masonry, or metal.

• The electrical outlet must be within reach of the power cord.

• The air conditioner should be tilted about 3° for better drainage of condensate and rainwater.

The top rail must be assembled prior to installing the air conditioner in the window. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver.

1. Remove the air conditioner from the box and place on a hard and flat surface.

2. Remove the top rail from the top of the packaging material.

3. Align the holes in the top rail with those in the top of the unit.

4. Secure the top rail to the unit with the four 3/8″ screws. For safety reasons, all 4 screws must be used.

1. First, install the side accordion panels. Hold a panel in one hand and gently pull back the center to free the open end. Slide the free end into the cabinet, leaving enough space to slip the top and bottom of the frame into the rails on the cabinet. Once installed, slide the top and bottom ends of the frame into the cabinet rails and slide the panel all the way in. Repeat on the other side.

2. Keep a firm grip on the air conditioner. Carefully place the unit into the window opening so the bottom of the air conditioner frame is against the window sill. Carefully close the window behind the top rail of the unit.

3. Extend the side panels out against the window frame.

4. Drive three 1/2″ locking screws through the filler panel frame holes into the window sash on both the left and right sides.

5. Place the frame lock between the frame extensions and the window sill. Drive 3/4″ locking screws through the frame lock and into the sill on both sides. To prevent the window sill from splitting, it’s recommended to drill 1/8” pilot holes before driving screws.

6. To secure the lower sash in place, attach the right-angle sash lock with two 3/4” screws.

7. Cut the foam seal strip and insert it in the window space between the upper and lower sashes.

You should add wood or remove the storm window before the air conditioner is installed. If the storm window frame must remain, be sure the drain holes or slots are not caulked or painted shut. Accumulated rainwater or condensation must be allowed to drain out.

• Turn the A/C off and disconnect the power cord.

• Remove the sash seal from between the windows and unscrew the safety lock.

• Remove screws installed through the frame and frame lock.

• Close (slide) the side panels into the frame.

• Keeping a firm grip on the air conditioner, raise the sash and carefully “rock” the air conditioner backward to drain any condensate water in the base of the unit. Be careful not to spill any remaining water while lifting the unit from the window. Store parts WITH the air conditioner.

To store the air conditioner when it is not in use for an extended period, remove the black rubber drain plug found on the lower left-hand corner of the back of the air conditioner. This will allow you to remove any water that has collected inside the bottom of the unit while it is still outdoors. To make access easier, collapse the side filler panels toward the AC unit.

Once water has been removed, replace the drain plug by aligning the inside of the plug with the cutout in the wall of the unit and push firmly until the plug is completely sealed. Store the air conditioner in a dry environment and cover it with plastic or place it back in the original box.

• If you turn off the air conditioner, wait at least 3 minutes before turning it back on. This prevents the air conditioner from blowing a fuse or tripping a circuit breaker.

• Do not try to operate your air conditioner in the cooling mode when the outside temperature is below 65°F (18°C). The inside evaporator coil will freeze up and the air conditioner will not operate properly.

• In the event of a power failure, your air conditioner will operate at the previous settings when the power is restored.

• POWER: Turn on the unit by rotating the MODE dial to the desired setting.

• COOLING MODE: For maximum cooling, set the MODE dial to HIGH COOL. In this mode, the fan will automatically go to high. The fan will operate on low in the LOW COOL mode.

• FAN MODE: For fan-only modes, choose either HIGH FAN or LOW FAN. The air conditioner will not cool the room when in fan mode.

• THERMOSTAT: Turn the TEMP dial to set the desired room temperature. For maximum cooling, turn the TEMP dial to 7 (max cool).

• DIRECTIONAL LOUVERS: To direct the airflow, use the horizontal wheel to control the horizontal direction and the air deflector to control the vertical direction.

NOTE: To minimize wear and tear, always wait at least 3 minutes before changing modes to prevent the compressor from overheating.

• You may hear a pinging noise caused by water hitting the condenser on rainy days or when humidity is high. This design feature helps remove moisture and improve efficiency.

• You may hear the thermostat click when the compressor cycles on and off.

• Water will collect in the base pan during rain or days of high humidity. The water may overflow and drip from the outside part of the unit.

• The fan may run even when the compressor is not on.

The air filter should be checked at least once every month. To clean the air filter:

1. Remove the filter by sliding it out from the front right side of the air conditioner.

2. Wash the filter using liquid dish soap and warm water. Rinse the filter thoroughly. Gently shake the filter to remove excess water.

3. Let the filter dry completely before placing it back into the air conditioner.

4. If you do not wish to wash the filter, you may vacuum the filter to remove the dust and other particles.

• Unplug the air conditioner to prevent shock or a fire hazard. The cabinet and front panel may be dusted with an oil-free cloth or washed with a cloth dampened in a solution of warm water and mild liquid soap. Rinse thoroughly with a damp cloth and wipe dry.

• Never use harsh cleaners, wax, or polish on the cabinet front.

• Be sure to wring excess water from the cloth before wiping around the controls. Excess water in or around the controls may cause damage to the air conditioner.

• Do not use means to accelerate the defrosting process or to clean, other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

• The appliance shall be stored in a room without continuously operating ignition sources (for example: open flames, an operating gas appliance or an operating electric heater).

• Do not pierce or burn.

• Be aware that the refrigerants may not contain an odor.

• The appliance should be installed, operated and stored in a room with a floor area according to the amount of refrigerant to be charged. For specific information on the type of gas and the amount, please refer to the relevant label on the unit itself.

• The appliance shall be installed, operated and stored in a room with a floor area larger than 4m². It shall not be installed in an unventilated space if that space is smaller than 4m².

• No open fire or device like a switch which may generate spark/arcing shall be around the appliance to avoid causing ignition of the flammable refrigerant used. Please follow the instructions carefully when storing or maintaining the appliance to prevent mechanical damage from occurring.

If your BLACK+DECKER BWAC05MWTB will not start, check the following possible causes and remedies:

• The air conditioner is unplugged: Make sure the air conditioner plug is pushed completely into the outlet.

• The fuse is blown/circuit breaker is tripped: Check the house fuse/circuit breaker box and replace the fuse or reset the breaker.

• Power failure: The unit will automatically restart when power is restored. There is a protective time delay of approximately 3 minutes to prevent tripping the compressor overload. The unit may not start normal cooling for 3 minutes after it is turned back on.

• The current interrupter device is tripped: Press the RESET button located on the power cord plug. If the RESET button will not stay engaged, discontinue use of the air conditioner and contact a qualified service technician.

If your BLACK+DECKER BWAC05MWTB does not cool as it should, check these possible causes:

• Air flow is restricted: Make sure there are no curtains, blinds, or furniture blocking the front of the air conditioner.

• The temperature control may not be set correctly: Lower the set thermostat temperature.

• The air filter is dirty: Clean the filter. See the Cleaning & Care section of the manual.

• The room may be too warm: Please allow time for the room to cool down after turning on the air conditioner.

• Cold air is escaping: Check for open furnace registers and cold air returns.

• The cooling coils are frozen: See the troubleshooting section for “Air Conditioner Freezing Up”.

If ice blocks the air flow and stops the air conditioner from cooling the room, set the MODE dial to HIGH FAN or HIGH COOL and set the thermostat to a higher temperature.

This is normal in hot and humid weather.

The air conditioner is not correctly tilted outside. For proper water drainage, make sure the air conditioner is slightly tilted downward from the front of the unit to the rear.

Moisture removed from the air is draining into the base pan. This is normal for a short period in areas with low humidity and normal for a longer period in areas with high humidity.
