What is the AUTOOL SDT203 Smoke Leak Detector and how does it work?
Overview
The AUTOOL SDT203 automotive diagnostic leak detector is designed for testing leaks in vehicle pipe systems. It could be used on all cars, motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATV, light trucks, boats, etc. Used in conjunction with a diagnostic scanner, it can quickly diagnose vehicle engine faults.
Working Theory (Low oxygen combustion)
The AUTOOL SDT203 smoke leak detector employs a forced combustion smoke generation method in a low oxygen environment. It is energized by a conductive column to the heating wire, which rapidly heats up to more than 300°C so that the mineral oil reaches the ignition point and enters the state of combustion. Due to the small intake of air flow, it is insufficient to provide sufficient oxygen to maintain full combustion, thus the combustion mainly occurs on the surface of the heating wire. Subject to high-temperature heating, the mineral oil retention object can continue to burn insufficiently around the heating wire, thus producing a large amount of smoke.

| C | Smoke flow control valve | D | Smoke flow meter |
| E | Hook port | F | Power indicator |
| G | Smoke indicator | H | Smoke mode switch |
| I | Power socket | J | Smoke outlet |
How do I prepare the AUTOOL SDT203 for use?
1. Install the hook onto the hook port (E) and hang under the hood.
2. Open the filling cap and drain 10ml of test liquid into the filling port (A).
NOTE: If the smoke oil is overfilled, turn the unit upside down to drain some oil out.
3. Start using the SDT203 after the first two steps.
How do I perform a smoke test with the AUTOOL SDT203?
1. Mount the smoke hose to the smoke outlet (J) and the power cord to the power socket (I).
2. Connect the power cord to 12V vehicle battery.
NOTE: Red clamp to positive (+), black clamp to negative (-). For best performance, the vehicle battery shall be fully charged. Only 12V vehicle battery is allowed to be used as power supply for the unit.
3. When the power indicator light (F) is on, there is air pressure output from the nozzle on the smoke outlet tube.
4. Press the smoke control switch (H), and the work indicator light (G) will illuminate, causing smoke to be emitted from the nozzle on the smoke outlet tube. At this point, the main unit enters a 5-minute working cycle (after 5 minutes, the main unit will automatically stop generating smoke). During the 5-minute working cycle, pressing the smoke control switch (H) again will immediately exit the working cycle and stop the smoke generation.
What is the generic operation procedure for a leak test with the AUTOOL SDT203?
1. Turn off the ignition of the vehicle. Leak test of vehicle systems requires the engine to be off.
2. Dismantle the air filter and the throttle connections.
3. Clean the inner wall of the intake opening to avoid sharp objects and put the universal intake adapter into the opening.
4. Mount the smoke hose to the smoke outlet (J) and the power cord to the power socket (I).
5. Connect the power cord to 12V vehicle battery.
6. Now the power indicator (F) is on and the unit starts generating pressurized air.
7. Introduce the smoke nozzle into the system via the cone adapter.
8. Wait for 30 seconds until the system is pressurized, and check the pressure gauge (B) & smoke flow meter(D) reading for leak status.
9. Pull off the smoke nozzle from the cone adapter. Press the smoke mode switch (H), the smoke indicator (G) will be on. The unit will start generating smoke for an auto-stop 5 minutes working cycle.
10. Plug the smoke nozzle back into the cone adapter, when there’s obvious smoke coming out of the smoke nozzle.
11. The system will be ready for leak check in 2 minutes. Use a bright light torch or working lamp to assist.
12. After test, if the smoke indicator (G) is still on, press the smoke mode switch (H) again to stop the unit from generating smoke.
13. After the test is completed, turn off all switches, recycle and save the remaining test oil, put away all accessories, and confirm that there is no omission.
How do I use the airbag adapter with the AUTOOL SDT203?
Airbag adapters are suitable for non-circular connections. For round and oval ports, please use the inlet tapered adapter for normal cases.
1. Before using the airbag adapter, be sure to clean the inner wall of the intake manifold (or other test interfaces) to prevent sharp protrusions from piercing the airbag adapter.
2. Put the air bag (Z) into the test port.
3. Press the hand pump (X) until the bladder (Z) inflates and fully seals the test port.
4. Connect the cone head on the smoke outlet pipe with the smoke guide pipe (Y), introduce gases and smoke into the duct to be tested.
5. After the test is completed, turn the pressure relief valve (W) counter clockwise, take out the car air inlet adapter from the test port, clean and save it.
NOTE: Airbag adapter can not contact with corrosive oil.
