To ensure the best performance for your AT&T CL82207, install the telephone base close to a telephone jack and a power outlet that is not controlled by a wall switch. For optimal range and reception, place the telephone base in a central and open location.

Avoid placing the telephone base and charger too close to:

• Communication devices such as television sets, VCRs, or other cordless telephones.

• Excessive heat sources.

• Noise sources such as a window with traffic outside, motors, microwave ovens, refrigerators, or fluorescent lighting.

• Excessive dust sources such as a workshop or garage.

• Excessive moisture.

• Extremely low temperature.

• Mechanical vibration or shock, such as on top of a washing machine or workbench.

If you have high-speed Internet service (DSL), you must install a DSL filter between the telephone line cord and the wall jack to prevent noise and caller ID problems.

1. Plug the small end of the telephone base power adapter into the power adapter jack on the back of the telephone base.

2. Route the power adapter cord through the designated slot.

3. Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the telephone jack on the back of the telephone base.

4. Route the telephone line cord through its slot.

5. Plug the other end of the telephone line cord into a telephone wall jack (or a DSL filter if you have DSL service).

6. Plug the large end of the telephone base power adapter into a power outlet not controlled by a wall switch.

7. Raise the antenna on the telephone base.

The power adapters are intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor mount position. The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under-the-table, or cabinet outlet.

Step 1. Plug the battery connector securely into the socket inside the handset battery compartment. Insert the supplied battery with the label THIS SIDE UP facing up.

Step 2. Align the battery compartment cover flat against the compartment, then slide it upwards until it clicks into place.

Step 3. Charge the handset by placing it face forward in the telephone base or charger. The CHARGE light on the handset will be on during charging.

For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. The battery is fully charged after ten hours of continuous charging.

Note: If you are on a phone call in low battery mode, you will hear four short beeps every minute.

After you install your telephone or power returns after an outage, the handset will prompt you to set the date and time. After setting the date and time (or skipping it), the handset will prompt you to set up the Smart call blocker and then the Answering system using a voice guide.

Voice guide to set Smart call blocker:

If you choose to set up the Smart call blocker via the voice guide, you will hear a prompt. Listen to the instructions and then choose one of the following options on the handset:

• Press 1 if you want to screen calls with telephone numbers that are not saved in your directory, allow list, or star name list.

• Press 2 if you only want to screen calls that do not display a phone number.

• Press 3 if you do not want to screen calls and want to allow all incoming calls to get through.

To skip the setup, press OFF/CANCEL on the handset. You can restart the voice guide later by resetting your handset power.

Your telephone base is ready for tabletop use by default. To mount it on a wall, you will need a standard dual-stud telephone wall-mounting plate.

1. Plug the telephone line into the telephone base. If you are using a DSL filter, plug the other end of the telephone line into the filter. Route the telephone line cord (or DSL filter) through the wall-mount bracket hole.

2. Align the holes on the wall-mount bracket with the standard wall plate and slide the wall-mount bracket down until it locks securely.

3. Position the telephone base so the extended tabs (marked B) of the wall-mount bracket insert into the slots on the back of the telephone base. Push the telephone base down until it is securely in place.

4. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet not controlled by a wall switch. Plug the other end of the power adapter into the telephone base. Bundle the telephone line cord and power adapter cord neatly with twist ties.

1. Unplug the large end of the power adapter from the electrical outlet.

2. If the telephone line cord and power adapter cord are bundled, untie them first. Slide the wall-mount bracket up and remove it from the wall-mounting plate.

3. Unplug the telephone line cord or the DSL filter from the telephone wall jack. Push the telephone base up and away from the wall-mount bracket to detach it.

4. Refer to the standard telephone base installation instructions for tabletop setup.

• Press MENU/SELECT to show the main menu.

• Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to scroll through menu items. The > symbol highlights the selected item.

• Press MENU/SELECT to confirm or save changes to a highlighted menu item.

• Press OFF/CANCEL to cancel an operation, back up to the previous menu, or exit the menu display. Press and hold this button to return to idle mode.

You can set the ringer volume to one of six levels, or turn it off. When the ringer is off, an icon appears on the screen.

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode to enter the main menu.

2. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR to scroll to Ringers, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Press MENU/SELECT again to select Ringer volume.

4. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to sample each volume level.

5. Press MENU/SELECT to save your preference.

You can choose one of ten ringer tones.

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode to enter the main menu.

2. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR to scroll to Ringers, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to scroll to Ringer tone, then press MENU/SELECT.

4. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to sample each ringer tone.

5. Press MENU/SELECT to save your preference.

1. When the handset is in idle mode, press MENU/SELECT to enter the main menu.

2. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to scroll to Set date/time and then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR or the dialing keys to set the month, then press MENU/SELECT.

4. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR or the dialing keys to set the day, then press MENU/SELECT.

5. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR or the dialing keys to set the year, then press MENU/SELECT to move to the time setting.

6. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR or the dialing keys to set the hour.

7. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR or the dialing keys to set the minute.

8. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to highlight AM or PM. Press MENU/SELECT to confirm.

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode to enter the main menu.

2. Use ▼CID or ▲DIR to scroll to Settings, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Press MENU/SELECT to choose LCD language.

4. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to highlight English, Français, or Español, then press MENU/SELECT.

5. Press MENU/SELECT again to save your preference.

Note: If you accidentally change the language, you can reset it to English by pressing MENU/SELECT in idle mode, then entering 364#.

This feature allows the handset and/or base to speak the caller’s name or number. The default setting is On.

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode.

2. Scroll to Settings, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Scroll to Caller ID annc, then press MENU/SELECT.

4. Highlight one of the following options and press MENU/SELECT:

• Set all On/Off – Change the setting for the base and all handsets.

• Local handset – Change the setting for that handset only.

• Base – Change the setting for the telephone base only.

5. Highlight On or Off, then press MENU/SELECT to save.

This feature lets you save your voicemail number for easy access by pressing and holding the 1 key.

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode.

2. Scroll to Settings and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Scroll to Voicemail # and press MENU/SELECT.

4. Use the dialing keys to enter your voicemail access number (up to 30 digits).

• Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to move the cursor.

• Press MUTE/DELETE to erase a digit.

• Press and hold MUTE/DELETE to erase all digits.

• Press and hold REDIAL/PAUSE to insert a three-second dialing pause.

5. Press MENU/SELECT to save. The screen displays “Voicemail # saved”.

Use this feature when the telephone indicates you have new voicemail, but there is none (for example, after you have checked your messages from another phone). This feature only turns off the visual indicators; it does not delete your voicemail messages.

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode.

2. Scroll to Settings and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Scroll to Clr voicemail and press MENU/SELECT. The screen shows “Reset Voicemail Indicator?”.

4. Press MENU/SELECT again to turn the indication off. You will hear a confirmation tone.

Making a Call:

• Press PHONE/FLASH or SPEAKER, then enter the telephone number.

Answering a Call:

• Press PHONE/FLASH or SPEAKER.

• Alternatively, press any dialing key (0-9, TONE *, or #).

Ending a Call:

• Press OFF/CANCEL or return the handset to the telephone base or charger.

On-hook Dialing (Predialing):

1. Enter the telephone number while the phone is idle. Press MUTE/DELETE to make corrections.

2. Press PHONE/FLASH or SPEAKER to dial.

During a call, press SPEAKER to switch between the handsfree speakerphone and the normal handset earpiece. To hang up while using the speakerphone, press OFF/CANCEL or return the handset to its base or charger.

While the telephone is ringing, press OFF/CANCEL or MUTE/DELETE. This silences the ringer for the current call on that handset only without disconnecting the call. The next incoming call will ring normally at the preset volume.

If you subscribe to call waiting service and someone calls while you are already on a call, you will hear two beeps.

• Press PHONE/FLASH on the handset to put your current call on hold and take the new call.

• Press PHONE/FLASH at any time to switch back and forth between calls.

To start the paging tone:

• Press FIND HS on the telephone base. All idle handsets will ring for 60 seconds.

To stop the paging tone:

• Press PHONE/FLASH, SPEAKER, or any dialing key on a handset.

-OR-

• Press FIND HS again on the telephone base.

The shared directory can store up to 50 entries.

Create a New Directory Entry:

1. Press MENU/SELECT in idle mode.

2. Scroll to Directory, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Scroll to Add contact, then press MENU/SELECT.

4. Use the dialing keys to enter a telephone number (up to 30 digits).

5. Press MENU/SELECT.

6. Use the dialing keys to enter a name (up to 15 characters).

7. Press MENU/SELECT to store the entry.

Review Directory Entries:

1. Press ▲DIR in idle mode to see the first entry.

2. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to browse through the directory alphabetically.

Search by Name:

1. Press ▲DIR in idle mode.

2. When an entry appears, press the dialing keys (0-9) to start a name search. The directory will show the first name beginning with the letter associated with that key.

First, display the desired entry by reviewing or searching the directory.

To Dial an Entry:

• With the entry displayed, press PHONE/FLASH or SPEAKER.

To Delete an Entry:

• With the entry displayed, press MUTE/DELETE. Press MENU/SELECT to confirm.

To Edit an Entry:

1. With the entry displayed, press MENU/SELECT.

2. The screen shows EDIT NUMBER. Edit the number using the dialing keys, MUTE/DELETE, and the arrow keys. Press MENU/SELECT when done.

3. The screen shows EDIT NAME. Edit the name using the dialing keys. Press MENU/SELECT to save.

The Smart Call Blocker filters robocalls, telemarketing calls, and unwanted calls while allowing welcome calls to get through. It is on by default and allows all calls through. You can change settings to screen or block calls.

Call Categories:

• Welcome calls: Numbers saved in your allow list or directory, and names in your star name list.

• Unwelcome calls: Numbers saved in your block list.

• Calls without numbers: Calls that are “out of area” or “Private”.

• Uncategorized calls: Calls with numbers not in your lists, or with absent caller ID.

To turn Smart Call Blocker On/Off:

1. Press CALL BLOCK on the handset when it is not in use.

2. Press MENU/SELECT to select SCB On/Off.

3. Press ▼CID or ▲DIR to highlight On or Off, then press MENU/SELECT.

The block list can store up to 1,000 entries.

Add a Block Entry:

1. Press CALL BLOCK, then scroll to Block list and press MENU/SELECT.

2. Select Add new entry and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Enter the number and press MENU/SELECT.

4. Enter the name and press MENU/SELECT.

Review Block List:

1. Press CALL BLOCK, scroll to Block list, and press MENU/SELECT.

2. Select Review and browse the entries with ▼CID or ▲DIR.

Delete a Block Entry:

• While reviewing the list, display the entry and press MUTE/DELETE. Press MENU/SELECT to confirm.

Save a Caller ID Log Entry to the Block List:

1. While reviewing the caller ID log, display the entry and press MENU/SELECT.

2. Scroll to Block list and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Edit the number and name if necessary, pressing MENU/SELECT after each step to save.

When an uncategorized call is screened and your phone rings, the system announces options. You can:

• Press 1: To answer the call once. The number will not be added to your allow list.

• Press 2: To answer the call and always allow this number. The number will be added to your allow list.

• Press 3 or CALL BLOCK: To block this number. The number will be added to your block list.

• Press 4: To send this call to the answering system.

• Press *: To repeat these options.

Turn Answering System On/Off:

• On the telephone base, press ANS ON/OFF. The light next to the button will be on when the system is on.

• On the handset, navigate to Menu > Answering sys > Answer ON/OFF, select On or Off, and press MENU/SELECT.

Play Messages on the Telephone Base:

• Press ►/PLAY/STOP to listen to messages. The system announces the number of messages then begins playback. Press the button again to stop.

Play Messages on a Cordless Handset:

1. Press MENU/SELECT, then select Play messages.

2. If you have new and old messages, you can choose to play new or old messages. Otherwise, playback starts automatically.

On the Telephone Base:

• Press ▲VOLUME+ or ▼VOLUME- to adjust playback volume.

• Press ►►/SKIP to skip to the next message.

• Press ◄◄/REPEAT to repeat the message. Press twice for the previous message.

• Press X/DELETE to delete the current message.

• Press ►/PLAY/STOP to stop playback.

On the Handset:

• Press ▲DIR/VOLUME or ▼CID/VOLUME to adjust playback volume.

• Press 6 to skip to the next message.

• Press 4 to repeat the message. Press twice for the previous message.

• Press MUTE/DELETE to delete the current message.

• Press 5 or OFF/CANCEL to stop the playback.

• Press PHONE/FLASH to call back the number if available.

1. On the handset, press MENU/SELECT.

2. Scroll to Answering sys and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Select Announcement and press MENU/SELECT.

4. Select Record annc. The system announces, “Record after the tone. Press 5 when you are done.”

5. Speak towards the handset to record your announcement (up to 90 seconds). Press 5 to end recording. Your recorded announcement will play back.

1. Dial your telephone number from any touch-tone telephone.

2. When the system answers, enter your two-digit remote access code (the default is 19).

3. Use the following remote commands to manage your messages:

Register a Handset to the Telephone Base:

1. Before you begin, make sure the handset is out of the telephone base or charger and shows “To register HS, see manual.”

2. Place the handset you wish to register on the telephone base cradle.

3. The handset will show “Registering…. Please wait” and the IN USE light on the base will turn on. When registration is complete, the handset will beep and show “HANDSET X Registered”.

Deregister All Handsets from the Telephone Base:

You must deregister all handsets to remove or reassign one.

1. Make sure all handsets are out of the telephone base and chargers.

2. Press and hold FIND HS on the telephone base for about ten seconds, until the IN USE light starts to flash. Then release FIND HS.

3. Immediately press FIND HS again while the light is still flashing.

4. The process takes up to ten seconds. The handsets will then show “To register HS, see manual.” You can then register the handsets you wish to use one by one.

• Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into the base and the wall outlet.

• Make sure the telephone line cord is securely plugged into the base and the wall jack.

• Ensure the battery connector is securely plugged into the handset.

• Charge the battery in the handset for at least ten hours.

• Reset the telephone base. Unplug the electrical power, wait for 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the system to reset.

• You may need to purchase a new battery.

• Make sure you have a dial tone before dialing. The handset may take a second or two to connect to the base.

• Eliminate background noise from a TV, radio, or other appliances that may be interfering.

• If other phones in your home have the same problem, contact your telephone service provider.

• If the charge light does not turn on when the handset is in the base, check that the power cord is plugged in and clean the charging contacts on the handset and base with a pencil eraser or cloth.

• Charge the battery for at least ten hours continuously.

• If the battery is depleted, it may take approximately 30 minutes of charging before the screen shows “Low battery”.

• You may need to purchase a new battery.

• If you have DSL high-speed Internet service, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone line cord and the wall jack.

• Move the telephone base as far as possible from other electronic devices like computers, other cordless phones, microwaves, or HAM radios.

• Try moving the telephone base to a higher location for better reception.

• If the problem persists on other phones in your home, contact your telephone service provider.

• Make sure the ringer is not turned off. Check the ringer volume settings in the handset menu.

• Ensure the telephone line cord and power cord are plugged in securely.

• The handset may be too far from the telephone base.

• The battery may need charging for at least ten hours.

• You may have too many other phones or devices on the same line.

• Move the handset closer to the telephone base.

• Move the telephone base away from other electronic devices like radios, computers, or other cordless phones.

• Move your telephone base to a higher location.

• Reset the telephone base by unplugging it from power for 15 seconds, then plugging it back in.

• Caller ID is a subscription service. You must subscribe to it from your telephone service provider.

• The caller may be calling from an area that does not support Caller ID.

• Both your and your caller’s telephone service providers must use compatible equipment.

• If you have DSL Internet service, ensure a DSL filter is installed on the phone line.

• Make sure the answering system is on. The handset screen should show ANS ON, and the ANS ON/OFF light on the base should be lit.

• Make sure the memory of the answering system is not full.

• If you subscribe to a voicemail service from your phone company, it may be answering calls before your AT&T CL82207’s system can. Try setting your answering system to answer in fewer rings (e.g., 4 rings if your voicemail answers at 6).

If the telephone does not seem to be responding normally, try resetting the system by following these steps in order:

1. Disconnect the power to the telephone base.

2. Disconnect the cordless handset battery.

3. Wait a few minutes.

4. Connect power back to the telephone base.

5. Re-install the battery and place the cordless handset into the telephone base or charger.

6. Wait for the cordless handset to reestablish its connection with the telephone base. Allow up to one minute for this to take place.

Operating time:

• Talk time (cordless handset): Up to 7 hours

• Standby: Up to 5 days

Operating times vary depending on your actual use and the age of the battery.
