Ensure that Airplane mode is turned off before enabling Wi-Fi.

1. Launch the Charms bar.

4. Select a device from the list. Compare the passcode on your Notebook PC with the passcode sent to your chosen device. If they are the same, tap “Yes” to pair.

Airplane mode disables all wireless communication.

To turn Airplane mode on:

• Using touchpad: Launch the Charms bar, tap “Settings” > wireless icon, then move the slider for Airplane mode to the right (On).

To turn Airplane mode off:

Configuring a dynamic IP/PPPoE network connection:

8. Select “Connect to the Internet” then tap “Next”.

9. Tap “Broadband (PPPoE)”.

10. Type your User name, Password, and Connection name, then tap “Connect”.

Configuring a static IP network connection:

1. Repeat steps 1 to 5 from the dynamic IP configuration.

2. Tap “Use the following IP address”.

3. Type the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway from your service provider.

4. If needed, type the preferred DNS server address and alternate DNS server address, then tap “OK”.

Turning Off your Notebook PC:

• From the Charms bar, tap “Settings” > “Power” > “Shut down”.

• From the log-in screen, tap the Power icon > “Shut down”.

• From the Desktop, press `alt` + `f4` to launch the Shut Down window. Select “Shut Down” from the drop-down list and click “OK”.

• If your Notebook PC is unresponsive, press and hold the power button for at least four (4) seconds to force a shutdown.

Putting your Notebook PC to sleep:

• Press the power button once.

• From the Desktop, press `alt` + `f4`, select “Sleep” from the drop-down list, and click “OK”.

Power4Gear Hybrid helps optimize the performance of your ASUS B551L using different power-saving modes.

Launching Power4Gear Hybrid:

• Press `fn` + `Spacebar`.

Running System Modes:

• Performance mode: Use this for high-performance activities like gaming or business presentations. This is the default mode.

• Battery Saving mode: This mode extends battery life. Your PC automatically switches to this mode when unplugged from the power adapter.

System in Sleep Modes:

• Instant On: This is the default-enabled mode. It allows the system to quickly return to its last working state from sleep mode.

• Long Standby Time: This mode allows the battery to last for up to 69 days or more. The PC returns to its last working state in about seven seconds.

You can switch between these modes within the Power4Gear Hybrid application interface.

USB Charger+ allows you to quick-charge devices using the designated USB 3.0 port. By default, this works when the PC is on power adapter mode. You can set a limit to allow quick-charging on battery power.

1. From the taskbar on your Desktop, click the up arrow icon to show hidden icons.

2. Right-click on the USB Charger+ icon (a battery with a lightning bolt) and then click “Settings”.

3. In the “USB Charger+ in battery mode” window, move the percentage slider to set the battery threshold limit for charging devices. The default is 40%, but you can set it from 20% to 99%.

4. Click “OK” to save and exit.

The ASUS FingerPrint app allows you to use your fingerprint for user-authenticated access.

1. From the Windows 8 Start Screen, go to “All Apps” and click on the “ASUS FingerPrint” icon under ASUS.

2. Click “OK” to proceed.

3. Key in your user account password and click “OK”.

4. On the finger illustration, click the “+” on the finger you would like to use for your biometric data.

5. Swipe your designated finger twice on the fingerprint sensor. The numbers 1 and 2 on the screen will turn blue to indicate a successful capture.

6. Click “Next” to proceed.

7. Create a boot key password to serve as a backup access for your fingerprint data. Provide a new boot key, confirm it, add a password hint, and click “OK”.

8. Click “Enable” to activate using your fingerprint for system log on.

Accessing BIOS:

• Restart your Notebook PC and press `F2` during the Power-on Self Test (POST).

Updating the BIOS:

1. Verify your Notebook PC’s exact model and download the latest BIOS file for your model from the ASUS website.

2. Save a copy of the downloaded BIOS file to a flash disk drive.

3. Connect the flash disk drive to your Notebook PC.

4. Restart your Notebook PC and press `F2` during POST to enter the BIOS menu.

5. From the BIOS menu, select “Advanced” > “Start Easy Flash”, then press `Enter`.

6. Locate your downloaded BIOS file in the flash disk drive and press `Enter` to start the update process.

7. After the BIOS update process is complete, select “Exit” > “Restore Defaults” to restore the system to its default settings.

You can access Windows 8 troubleshoot options by pressing `F9` during the Power-on Self Test (POST).

To Refresh your PC (refresh the system without losing files):

1. Restart your PC and press `F9` during POST.

2. Wait for the “Choose an option” screen to load, then tap “Troubleshoot”.

3. Tap “Refresh your PC”.

4. Read the information and tap “Next”.

5. Tap the account you would like to refresh.

6. Type your account password and tap “Continue”.

7. Tap “Refresh”. Ensure your Notebook PC is plugged into a power source.

To Reset your PC (restore to default settings, all data will be lost):

1. Restart your PC and press `F9` during POST.

2. On the “Choose an option” screen, tap “Troubleshoot”.

3. Tap “Reset your PC”.

4. Read the information and tap “Next”.

5. Choose your preferred reset option: “Just remove my files” or “Fully clean the drive”.

6. Tap “Reset”. Ensure your Notebook PC is plugged in and all your data is backed up before proceeding.

The module slot can house a removable optical disc drive, a secondary battery pack, or a 2.5-inch 7mm HDD/SSD module. The general procedure is as follows:

1. Shut down your Notebook PC and disconnect all cables and peripherals.

2. Place your Notebook PC on a flat, stable surface with the bottom side facing up.

3. Loosen the screw that secures the existing module.

4. Slide and hold the spring module lock (A) and push the module latch (B) in the direction of the arrows to release the current module.

5. Gently pull out the current module from the slot.

6. Orient and insert the new module (optical drive, battery pack, or HDD/SSD bay) into the slot. Push it all the way in until the spring module lock and latch click into place.

7. Secure the new module using the screw you removed earlier.

For HDD/SSD Installation:

• After removing the module bay (step 5), turn it over and unlock the module bay’s bracket.

• If replacing an old drive, carefully slide it out of the drive connector.

• Carefully place the new HDD or SSD into the module bay and slide it towards the drive connector.

• Replace the bracket on the module bay to secure the new drive.

• Proceed with step 6 above to insert the module bay back into the Notebook PC.

• Update Windows periodically to ensure your applications have the latest security settings.

• Use an anti-virus software to protect your data and keep it updated.

• Unless absolutely necessary, refrain from using force shutdown.

• Always back up your data to an external storage drive.

• Refrain from using the Notebook PC at extremely high temperatures.

• If you are not going to use your Notebook PC for a long period (at least a month), it is recommended to remove the battery if it is removable.

• Before resetting your PC, disconnect all external devices and have your product keys, backup data, login info, and internet connection information ready.

You can try any of the following suggestions to maximize battery life:

• Use Battery Mode under the Power4Gear application.

• Use the function keys (`fn`+`F5`) to decrease the display brightness.

• If you are not using any wireless connections, switch your system into Airplane mode.

• Disconnect unused USB devices.

• Close unused applications, especially those that consume a lot of system memory.

If your touchpad is not working, try these suggestions:

• Press `fn` + `F9` to ensure the touchpad is enabled.

• Check if ASUS Smart Gesture has been set to disable the touchpad when an external pointing device is connected. If so, disable this function.

• Make sure that nothing is accidentally touching or pressing on the touchpad while you type, as this can cause the cursor to move unexpectedly.

You can try any of the following suggestions:

• Remove all connected devices to your Notebook PC and then restart the system.

• Press `F9` upon startup to enter Troubleshooting, then select “Refresh” or “Reset your PC”.

• If the problem still exists, contact your local ASUS service center for assistance.

• You need to press the power button to resume your last working state.

• Your system might have completely used up its battery power. Connect the power adapter to your Notebook PC and to a power outlet, then press the power button.

Refer to the following steps:

a. Restart your Notebook PC and enter BIOS by pressing `F2` on your keyboard.

b. Go to “Boot” > “Launch CSM” and set it to “Enabled”.

c. Go to the “Security” menu then set “Secure Boot Control” to “Disabled”.

d. Press `F10` to save changes and exit BIOS.

e. Press and hold `ESC` when your Notebook PC restarts to launch the boot menu.
