To ensure safe operation of the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS, follow these safety guidelines:

Use only solid wood or processed solid fuel fire logs. Do not poke or stir logs while they are burning.

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors or liquids in the vicinity of the appliance.

Due to high temperatures, the appliance should be located out of traffic and away from furniture and draperies.

Do not place clothing or other flammable materials on or near the appliance.

Never leave children unattended when a fire is burning in the fireplace.

Do not alter or modify the fireplace or its components under any circumstances, as this may void the warranty and result in a dangerous installation.

Ashes from the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS should be placed in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. The closed container of ashes should be placed on a noncombustible floor or on the ground, well away from all combustible materials, pending final disposal.

If the ashes are disposed of by burial in soil or otherwise locally dispersed, they should be retained in the closed container until all cinders have thoroughly cooled.

The following clearances must be maintained for the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS:

The damper handle for the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS is located inside the firebox at the center towards the back wall. Proper operation is as follows:

To Open the Damper: Pushing the handle back into the keyway slot will free the damper blade to automatically open. The vent damper must be locked in the full open position before operating the fireplace.

To Close the Damper: Push the handle back into the keyhole slot, then pull down and forward to lock it in place.

Note: When using the decorative appliance, the fireplace damper must be set in the fully open position.

If your SUPERIOR WRT2042WS is equipped with glass doors, follow these instructions:

Operation: Doors must be in the fully opened or fully closed position only while the fireplace is in operation. If doors are left partly open, gas and flame may be drawn out of the fireplace opening, creating risks of both fire and smoke.

Warm-up: The glass must be allowed to warm slowly and evenly. Never allow flames to contact the glass directly.

Safety: Do not slam or strike the doors. Discontinue use immediately if the doors are damaged and contact a qualified installer for repair.

Clean the glass of your SUPERIOR WRT2042WS with any commercial glass cleaner or soap and water. Do not use any abrasive material to clean the glass. Do not clean the glass with cool water if the glass is still hot from fire and smoke.

Use solid wood only for fuel in the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS. It is best to use dry and well-seasoned hardwood. Softwoods tend to burn very quickly. When burning artificial logs, follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Never use gasoline, kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid, or similar liquids to start or freshen up a fire. Keep all such liquids well away from the fireplace while it is in use.

Do not burn the following materials in your SUPERIOR WRT2042WS:

Garbage, lawn clippings, or yard waste.

Materials containing rubber, including tires, or plastic.

Waste petroleum products, paints, paint thinners, or asphalt products.

Materials containing asbestos.

Construction or demolition debris.

Railroad ties or pressure-treated wood.

Woods that have been dipped in tar, pitch, pine tar, or creosote.

Manure or animal remains.

Salt water driftwood or other salt water saturated materials.

Unseasoned wood.

Paper products, colored paper, cardboard, plywood, or particleboard.

Coal, charcoal, or grease.

Creosote is formed when wood is burned slowly, producing tar and organic vapors that condense in the cool chimney flue. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited, this creosote makes an extremely hot fire.

Management: The chimney should be inspected at least twice a year during the heating season to determine if creosote buildup has occurred. When creosote has accumulated to 1/8 inch (3 mm) or more, it must be removed to reduce the risk of a chimney fire.

Overfiring is a condition where excessive temperatures are reached beyond the design capabilities of the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS. Conditions that cause overfiring include:

Burning quantities of scrap lumber, pine branches, paper, or cardboard boxes which exceed the volume of a normal log fire.

Burning trash, chemicals, or chemically treated combustibles.

Signs of overfiring include the appliance or chimney connector glowing red, cracking, warping, or burning out of components. Plated accessories may turn color, and the glass may develop a haze that cannot be cleaned.

If the SUPERIOR WRT2042WS continues to smoke, it may be due to the following reasons:

Negative pressure in the house: Air going up the chimney must be replaced. Opening a nearby window temporarily can help determine if there is an inadequate replacement air supply.

Blowers operating: Household blowers like range hoods can draw air out of the house, causing negative pressure.

Wet wood: Wet or tarred wood will smolder and smoke instead of burning properly.

Dirty or blocked chimney: Ensure the chimney is clear and clean using a properly sized chimney brush.

Chimney height: The minimum chimney height is 12 feet. If installed with offsets, the minimum height is 15 feet. A short chimney may not produce adequate draft.

Poor chimney draft: Chimneys installed against an outside wall without protection may generate back draft problems.
