If you smell gas, follow these instructions exactly:

• Do not try to light any appliance.

• Do not touch any electrical switch.

• Do not use any phone in your building.

• Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.

• If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury when using the KITCHENAID KFGU766 cooktop, follow these basic precautions:

■ NEVER use this appliance as a space heater to heat or warm the room. Doing so may result in carbon monoxide poisoning and overheating of the cooktop.

■ CAUTION: Do not store items of interest to children in cabinets above the cooktop as children climbing on the cooktop to reach items could be seriously injured.

■ Ensure the cooktop is properly installed and electrically grounded in accordance with local codes by a qualified technician.

■ This cooktop is equipped with a three-prong grounding plug for your protection against shock hazard and should be plugged directly into a properly grounded receptacle. Do not cut or remove the grounding prong from this plug.

■ Disconnect the electrical supply before servicing the cooktop.

■ Injuries may result from the misuse of the cooktop such as stepping, leaning, or sitting on the top surface.

■ Keep the cooktop area clear and free from combustible materials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors and liquids.

■ Flammable materials should not be stored on or near surface units.

■ The top burner flame size should be adjusted so it does not extend beyond the edge of the cooking utensil.

1. Push in and turn the control knob counterclockwise to LITE. All surface burners will click, but only the burner with the control knob turned to LITE will produce a flame.

2. Turn the knob to anywhere between HI and LO to set the desired heat level.

Use the following chart as a guide when setting heat levels on your KITCHENAID KFGU766 cooktop:

REMEMBER: When the cooktop is in use, the entire cooktop area may become hot.

During the cooking cycle, if one or more burners power off due to external causes (such as water spillage, wind, etc.), the ignition system will turn on to re-ignite the flame. When the flame comes back on, the system will stop sparking. Sparking may also occasionally occur when using the low setting on a burner.

If the flame does not recover within 4 seconds, the cooktop will lock. The Cooktop Lock indicator light will turn on and a long beep will sound. To unlock the cooktop, turn all control knobs to the Off position, and the Cooktop Lock indicator light will turn off. Before restarting, check that the burners are clean. You may then continue cooking.

The Cooktop Lock on your KITCHENAID KFGU766 helps to avoid unintended use of the surface burners. If a control knob is turned to Lite when the Cooktop Lock is on, you will hear clicking and you may see the igniter sparking, but the burner will not light.

To activate: Turn off all burners and touch the lock key for 3 seconds. When the Cooktop Lock activates, the Cooktop Lock Indicator Light will turn on and 1 long beep will sound.

To deactivate: Touch the lock key for 3 seconds, the indicator light will turn off and 1 long beep will sound.

The tones on your KITCHENAID KFGU766 are audible signals, indicating the following:

One Long Beep: Activation/deactivation of the Cooktop Lock function.

Three Short Beeps: Invalid operation – attempting to lock or unlock the cooktop with 1 or more burners are on.

The Hot Surface Indicator Light will glow as long as any surface cooking area is too hot to touch, even after the surface cooking area(s) is turned off.

If the cooktop is on when a power failure occurs, the Hot Surface Indicator Lights will remain on after the power is restored to the cooktop. They will remain on until the cooktop has cooled completely.

After a power failure, when the power is restored the Hot Surface Indicator Light can stay on for up to 30 minutes. Times when this is most likely to occur:

■ After the cooktop is first installed.

■ After a power failure.

■ After a power failure while the cooktop is still cooling (30 to 40 minutes after cooking).

■ Any time power is disconnected from the cooktop.

Your KITCHENAID KFGU766 cooktop will not operate during a power failure.

For your KITCHENAID KFGU766, ideal cookware should have a flat bottom, straight sides, a well-fitting lid, and be of medium-to-heavy thickness. Rough finishes may scratch the cooktop. Aluminum and copper may be used as a core or base, but can leave permanent marks.

Use the following chart as a guide for cookware material characteristics:

Yes. When canning for long periods on your KITCHENAID KFGU766, alternate the use of surface burners between batches. This allows time for the most recently used areas to cool.

■ Center the canner on the grate.

■ Do not place a canner on 2 surface burners at the same time.

IMPORTANT: Before cleaning, make sure all controls are off and the cooktop is cool. Do not use oven cleaners, bleach or rust removers.

1. Remove the burner cap from the burner base and clean it according to the “General Cleaning” section instructions.

2. Clean the gas tube opening with a damp cloth. Gas must flow freely for the burner to light properly. Keep this area free of soil and do not allow spills or cleaning agents to enter the opening.

3. Clean clogged burner ports with a straight pin. Do not enlarge or distort the port. Do not use a wooden toothpick or clean in a dishwasher.

4. Gently clean the igniter with a damp cloth.

5. Replace the burner cap, making sure that it is properly aligned and centered with the burner base.

1. Gently clean the igniter, including over and under the edge of the metal cap and base, with a damp cloth.

2. Reassemble the center burner. Align the locator pin with the locator hole in the outer burner cap to ensure proper assembly.

3. Replace the inner burner cap. NOTE: The brass parts of the center burner will change color with use. This is normal.

4. Turn on the burner. If the burner does not light, check the cap alignment. If it still does not light, do not service the sealed burner yourself. Contact a trained repair specialist.

To avoid damaging the stainless steel finish, do not use soap-filled scouring pads, abrasive cleaners, Cooktop Polishing Creme, steel-wool pads, gritty washcloths, or some paper towels. Rub in the direction of the grain to avoid damaging the finish.

■ Use liquid detergent or an all-purpose cleaner. Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

■ Use vinegar for hard water spots.

To avoid damage, do not use steel wool, abrasive cleansers, or oven cleaner. Do not soak the knobs or clean them in a dishwasher. To clean, pull the knobs straight away from the control panel to remove them, then wash with soap and water. When replacing the knobs, make sure they are in the Off position and do not remove the seals under the knobs.

To avoid damage to the glass, do not use steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover, or ammonia. Always wipe with a clean, wet cloth or sponge and dry thoroughly to avoid streaking and staining. Use a liquid detergent, glass cleaner, or all-purpose cleaner with a soft cloth or sponge. Apply the cleaner to the cloth or sponge, not directly onto the panel.

Food spills containing acids, such as vinegar and tomato, should be cleaned as soon as the cooktop, grates, and caps are cool, as these spills may affect the finish. To avoid chipping, do not bang grates and caps against each other or hard surfaces like cast iron cookware. Do not reassemble caps on burners while they are wet. Do not clean them in the Self-Cleaning cycle or in a dishwasher.

For cleaning, use a nonabrasive plastic scrubbing pad and a mildly abrasive cleanser once the parts are cool.

To ensure proper placement, position the burner grate feet in the round grooves at the front and back of the cooktop. The position of the feet on each burner grate is different. Locator pins and matching grooves are also located on each burner grate to ensure they are placed correctly.

■ First, ensure the power supply cord is plugged into a grounded 3-prong outlet.

■ Check if a household fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem persists, call an electrician.

■ Verify that the cooktop is properly connected to the gas supply. If it is, you may need to contact a service technician.

■ If this is the first time the surface burners have been used, turn on any one of the surface burner knobs to release air from the gas lines.

■ On some models, check if the cooktop lock is activated. To deactivate, touch the lock key for 3 seconds.

■ Ensure the control knob is set correctly by pushing it in before turning to a setting.

■ Check if the burner ports are clogged. Refer to the “Sealed Surface Burners” section for cleaning instructions.

■ Make sure the main gas shutoff valve is in the on position.

■ The burner ports may be clogged. See the “Sealed Surface Burners” section for cleaning instructions.

■ On models with caps, check if the burner caps are positioned properly.

■ If propane gas is being used, the cooktop may have been converted improperly. Contact a service technician.

The burner is likely wet or dirty. Clean and/or let the burner dry completely.

Even when the KITCHENAID KFGU766 is not in use, it may create a low-level hum that can be noticed in very quiet environments. This noise is a normal function of the cooktop.

This may be occurring because it is the first time the cooktop has been plugged in or there has been a recent power failure. The hot surface indicator can stay on for up to 30 minutes. This is normal operation, as described in the “Hot Surface Indicator Light” section of the “Cooktop Controls”.

The cookware may not be the proper size. Use cookware that is about the same size as the surface cooking area, element, or surface burner. Cookware should not extend more than 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) outside the cooking area.

■ Ensure you are using the proper cookware. Refer to the “Cookware” section for recommendations.

■ Check that the control knob is set to the proper heat level.

■ Make sure the cooktop is level. Refer to the Installation Instructions to level the cooktop.
