JOHN DEERE LT166 (01) PDF SUMMARY:

What safety precautions should I take when operating the machine?

  • Check brake action before you operate. Adjust or service brakes as necessary.
  • Inspect the machine before operating. Ensure hardware is tight and repair or replace damaged, badly worn, or missing parts.
  • Be sure guards and shields are in good condition and fastened in place and make any necessary adjustments before you operate.
  • Clear the work area of objects that might be thrown and keep people and pets out of the work area. Stop the machine if anyone enters the area.
  • If you hit an object, stop the machine and inspect it. Make repairs before operating and keep the machine and attachments properly maintained and in good working order.
  • Do not leave the machine unattended when it is running.
  • Only operate during daylight or with good artificial light.
  • Be careful of traffic when operating near or crossing roadways.
  • Do not wear radio or music headphones while operating the machine, as safe operation requires your full attention.

How do I park the machine safely?

  • Stop the machine on a level surface, not on a slope.
  • Disengage mower blades.
  • Lower attachments to the ground.
  • Engage the park brake.
  • STOP the engine.
  • Remove the key.
  • Before leaving the operator’s seat, wait for the engine and all moving parts to STOP.

What should I do to protect children while operating the machine?

  • Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them. Stay alert to the presence of children, as they are attracted to mowing activity.
  • Keep children in the house when you are operating the machine.
  • Turn the machine off if a child enters the mowing area.
  • Use extra care when approaching blind corners, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may block your vision.
  • Do not let children or an untrained person operate the machine.
  • Do not carry or let children ride on the machine or any attachment and do not tow children in a cart or trailer.

What steps can I take to help prevent accidents?

  • Be alert at all times and drive forward carefully. People, especially children, can move quickly into the mowing area before you know it.
  • Back carefully. Shut off PTO and look behind the machine carefully, especially for children, before you back up.
  • Do not mow in reverse.
  • Shut off PTO when you are not mowing.
  • Do not operate the machine if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

How can I avoid tipping the machine?

  • Do not drive where the machine could slip or tip.
  • Stay alert for holes and other hidden hazards in the terrain.
  • Keep away from drop-offs.
  • Slow down before making a sharp turn or operating on a slope.
  • When pulling loads or using heavy equipment, use only approved hitches, limit loads to those you can safely control, and use counterweights or wheel weights when required per the manual or your attachment manual.
  • Drive up and down a hill – not across. Be careful when changing direction on a slope.
  • Do not stop when going uphill or downhill. If the machine stops going uphill, DISENGAGE mower blades and back down slowly.
  • Be careful when mowing wet grass, as reduced traction could cause sliding.
  • Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting your foot on the ground.

What type of clothing should I wear while operating the machine?

Wear close-fitting clothing and safety equipment appropriate for the job. If there is loud noise, which can cause impairment or loss of hearing, wear a suitable protective device such as earplugs.

How should I transport the machine safely?

  • Use safety lights and devices. Slow-moving machines when driven on public roads are hard to see, especially at night, to avoid personal injury or death resulting from a collision with a vehicle.
  • Whenever driving on public roads, use flashing warning lights and turn signals according to local regulations. Extra flashing warning lights may need to be installed.

How do I use front and rear weights?

NOTE: Before installing wheel weights on your machine, MAKE SURE that the tire valve stems are facing to the inside.

Install front wheel weights for better stability and steering control when you use equipment such as the rear-mounted grass bagger. Remove front wheel weights when not required.

To use rear wheel weights, see your John Deere dealer. The rear weights are recommended when a front blade is used.

When are tire chains recommended?

Tire chains are recommended for use with the front blade. (See your John Deere dealer for tire chains.)

How do I prepare the tractor for installing chains on tires?

Park the machine on a level surface. Lock the park brake. STOP the engine and remove the key.

How do I install the chains?

  1. Remove chains from the bag and lay them out flat with the cross chain hook ends facing downward. Remove any twists and tangles from the cross chain and rim chain.
  2. Drive the machine onto the chains.
  3. Drape the chain over the tire with the lever fastener on the outside of the tire and cross link hooks facing upward and away from the tire.
  4. Adjust the chain for straightness and an even amount of cross chain links on each side of the tire.
  5. Place the first cross chain (opposite the end with the fastener and inside hook) under the tire.
  6. Pull the inside rim chain tight and hook the inside hook. Pull the outside rim chain tight and hook the outside lever fastener by running the end through a free link. Close the fastener by rotating it back 180 degrees and engaging the hook on the end of the fastener into a rim chain link. Make sure the chain is centered on the tire with approximately the same number of free rim links on the inside and outside.
  7. Tie excess rim chain links back to the rim chain.
  8. The chain should be as tight as possible by hand. Unhook the fastener and repeat Step 5 if the chain is loose.
  9. Drive forward on the chains 30’-40’ and recheck for tightness. Adjust as necessary.

How do I transport the lawn tractor?

  • DO NOT TOW the lawn tractor.
  • Use a heavy-duty trailer to transport your lawn tractor.

  1. Return the mower engagement lever to the OFF position before shifting to REVERSE.

How do I disengage the mower?

Pull the mower blade engagement lever back to DISENGAGE the mower. If you hit an object with the mower while mowing, STOP the mower and engine immediately and inspect the mower for damage.

What blades should I use for the 38-inch mower?

  • LOW-LIFT BLADE: For cutting thin stands of grass and for dusty or dirty conditions. Do not use for bagging.
  • MEDIUM-LIFT BLADE: Standard on the mower. For bagging an average stand of grass regularly and for cutting thicker grass without a bagger attached.
  • HIGH-LIFT BLADE: For cutting and bagging thick, tall grass and/or leaves.

What blades should I use for the Freedom42 mower?

Mulch Blades are standard on the Freedom42 Mower.

NOTE: The Freedom42 Mulching Mower Deck uses two different blades that must be installed on proper spindle. The left and right blades are identified on the bottom surface and arrows are located on the outside edge of the mower as well as the respective blade showing rotation.

What blades should I use for the 46-inch mower?

There is only one general purpose mower blade for the 46-Inch mower.

What steps should I take before dismounting to inspect or unplug the mower or optional bagger?

  1. STOP the machine.
  2. Pull the mower blade engagement lever back to DISENGAGE the mower.
  3. Move the throttle lever to the SLOW position.
  4. Lower the mower to the ground.
  5. LOCK the park brake.
  6. STOP the engine.
  7. Remove the key.
  8. Wait for all moving parts to STOP.

What are some mowing tips?

  • Before mowing, be sure the deck is leveled and the mower wheels are in the proper position.
  • When you mow an area for the first time, travel SLOW and cut HIGH so you can learn the terrain, learn the best mowing pattern, and help prevent hitting objects hidden in the grass.
  • Wet grass may plug the mower and leave a trail of grass clumps. Wet cutting conditions do not adversely affect cutting performance when using the Freedom42 Mulching Mower. However, for best lawn health it is still better to mow when dry.
  • Mow grass often, as short grass clippings will decay quickly.
  • Mow at full throttle for best performance.
  • Use a travel speed that fits the conditions:
    • Travel SLOW when you mow thick, tall grass.
    • FAST travel or sharp turns may produce stripes or an uneven cut–slow down.
    • Travel at MODERATE speed when you mow a thin stand of grass.
  • It is always best to remove only 1/3 of the grass when mowing. Cutting grass too short may kill the grass and let weeds grow easily.
  • Aerate the lawn to help stimulate soil organisms and root growth.

What is a suggested finished cut height range when using the Freedom42 Mulching Mower?

In most grasses and cutting conditions, a suggested finished cut height range is 1 3/4 Inches to 2 3/4 Inches when using the Freedom42 Mulching Mower.

A good approach to cut height selection when mowing with the Freedom42 Mulching Mower is to start by raising your mower deck to the highest position, then use the Mower Height Control Knob to lower the mower deck by 1/4 Inch increments in order to “fine tune” the cut to match your specific lawn conditions.

What factors other than cut height can have dramatic effects on the final lawn appearance?

These include variables such as:

  • Tractor ground speed
  • Amount of grass being removed
  • Type of grass
  • Grass density
  • Moisture level

What should I do to avoid a strip of poorly cut grass down the center when mowing with the Freedom42 Mulching Mower?

  • Avoid mowing Tall Grass; Mow more frequently and do not let grass grow beyond 6 Inches.
  • When mowing Tall, Sparse Grass; Cut at lower heights (less than 3 Inches) to encourage dense growth and cut at slower ground speed.
  • SLOW DOWN your ground speed and maintain FAST THROTTLE.

What are some trimming tips?

  • When using 38 or 46-Inch mowers, turn to the left around trees, bushes, etc. When using the Freedom42, you can trim on either side with equal results.
  • Drive slowly and avoid hitting trees, bushes, etc.
  • If the ground slopes up to a tree or bush, you may have to approach the tree or bush straight-on to avoid scalping.
  • Mow parallel to the pavement extending the deck 2 Inches off the lawn when MULCHING. This will allow clippings to dispense over the grass and not onto the pavement.
  • When using the Freedom42 deck: Mow around the perimeter twice, then mow infield in straight passes. The best cut is achieved when mowing straight.

How can scalping be avoided?

  • Pay attention to the way the tractor is driven.
  • Ensure the cutting height is not too low for ground conditions.
  • Adjust front mower wheels correctly.
  • Drive over ridges and through shallow ditches straight-on, not at an angle.

What should be checked if the lawn cut is uneven?

  • The mower may not be level.
  • Speed may be too fast before turns.
  • Blades may need sharpening.

What are some bagging tips for best performance?

  • Keep the underside of the deck and chute clean.
  • Cut grass high.
  • Mow at full throttle.
  • Clean bags often with water from the outside to the inside and let them dry before use.

What should you do if the mower leaves a trail of clippings or clippings blow to the side?

Check the level of clippings in the bags often, as the bags may be full.

What are the advantages of mulching?

  • Raking or bagging grass or leaves is unnecessary.
  • Lawn holds moisture better during dry weather.
  • Soil temperatures stay down during hot weather.
  • Mulch adds nutrients to the soil and reduces the need for fertilizer.

What problems may occur when mulching wet or damp grass or leaves?

  • Clippings and leaves may build up on the underside of the mower deck.
  • Cut grass and leaves may form clumps.
  • Clippings and leaves may not be cut into small bits.
  • The engine may work harder and use more fuel.

What are the features of the front lip section on a 38-inch mower?

  • Reduces material blown out from the right front of the deck.
  • Helps keep the engine, mower deck, and operator clean.
  • Prevents leaves from blowing away from the deck.
  • Increases airflow from mower to bags.

When is the front lip section not recommended for use?

  • When mowing long, lush, or thick grass where poor cut quality is a problem.
  • When using low lift blades.

What are the features of the side lip section on a 38-inch mower?

  • Reduces material blown out from the left front corner of the deck.
  • Helps keep the engine and operator clean.
  • Eliminates material blown out on the left side of the deck when mowing along sidewalks and roadsides.

When is the side lip section recommended and not recommended for use?

  • Recommended: Used with medium or high lift blades when bagging in dry, dusty conditions.
  • Not Recommended: When mowing long, lush, or thick grass where poor cut quality is a problem or when side discharging.

What are the features of the rear lip section on a 38-inch mower?

Creates a vacuum effect that sweeps the lawn clean.

When is the rear lip section recommended for use?

When bagging leaves, pine cones, needles, sticks, loose bark, after thatching, or when bagging very heavy grass.

What should be done to practice safe maintenance?

  • Understand the service procedure before doing work and keep the area clean and dry.
  • Never lubricate, service, or adjust the machine while it is moving.
  • Keep safety devices in place and in working condition and keep hardware tight.
