What should I do before tilling?

  1. Learn all tractor and tiller controls and how 1hey work.

  2. Check the following:

    • Guards and shields fastened in place.
    • Belt tension.
    • Condition of belt and tines.
    • Parts: loose, missing, worn, damaged.
    • Tiller mounting position.
  3. Pick up debris-rocks, cans, sticks-from tilling area.

  4. Cut tall grass and weeds.

  5. Study the tilling area. Set up a safe tilling pattern.

  6. Drive to tilling area with tiller raised to full height and PTO OFF.

  7. Clear the area of people and pets.

  8. Check soil moisture.

How do I check soil moisture?

DO NOT till wet soil: wet soil will form lumps and dry coarse and hard to work.

Squeeze a soil sample in your hand. If soil forms a ball, it’s too wet to till. If soil crumbles, it’s ready to till.

How to plan the tilling pattern?

  • For Forward Tine Rotation: Drive tractor in counterclockwise pattern (A) to remove tire tracks.
  • For Reverse Tine Rotation: Drive tractor in clockwise pattern (B) to remove tire tracks.

How to adjust the leveler door?

  1. Adjust door height for your tilling operation.
  2. Fasten chain link on hook.
  • For Making a Seed Bed: Adjust door to rest on ground. Tilled soil will be fine and level.

    • IMPORTANT: DO NOT back the tractor when the door is on ground.
  • For Mulching or Tilling Sod: Adjust door as high as possible. Tilled soil will be coarse.

How to adjust the tiller depth?

  1. Park tractor and tiller on tilling area

  2. Turn depth control knob clockwise all the way:

    • if you want to till at maximum depth.
    • if tiller has skid shoes.

To adjust tiller depth for other settings:

  1. Start engine. Engage tiller. (See Starting Tiller in this section.)
  2. Push down lift lever button. Push lever forward until tiller is at desired depth.
  3. Stop tiller and engine.
  4. Turn depth control knob counterclockwise until it is tight.

How to start the tiller?

  1. Raise tiller as high as it will go.
  2. Start engine. Put throttle lever in one-fourth speed position.

NOTE: Early 200 series tractors have a PTO clutch lever on the dash.

  1. Pull out on PTO switch lever. Move lever up to ON position to engage tiller.
  2. Move throttle lever to “FAST” position. Operate tiller at full throttle for best tractor and tiller performance.
  • When you raise tiller out of ground or lower tiller into ground, the tractor may surge forward. Be ready to stop PTO and tractor.
  1. Most tilling should be done in first gear. Maximum speed in first gear is 1.4 km/h (0.9 mph). If you till in a higher gear, tiller will not pulverize or penetrate soil as well.

What are some tilling tips?

  • Check tines before you till. Loose, bent, or broken tines will make tilling more difficult.
  • When you till hard soil or sod, till at shallow depth for first pass. Till at a lower depth on each pass after the first pass.
  • If you want a fine seedbed, lower the tiller door until it rests on the ground.
  • When you till a small area, make a pass through the middle, then make passes around the outside of the first pass. This pattern removes all tire tracks.
  • Till in a straight line when possible. This will leave fewer ridges from turning.
  • To make a seedbed, till soil once in the fall. Leaves, stems, and roots will decay during fall and winter and nourish the soil.
  • If tilling area is hilly wait until spring before you till to prevent soil erosion.
  • When you are tilling, keep travel speed slow and steady for a uniform seedbed.
  • To improve steering and stability when you are tilling, install three front weights on your tractor.
  • Adjust rear tractor wheels to maximum width if you till on slopes.
  • When you till soft soil, you may want to tighten the helper spring to make lifting tiller easier.
  • When you till hard soil or sod, you may have to release some spring tension for better tiller penetration.

How to dismount to inspect or unplug the tiller?

  1. Stop tractor.
  2. Raise tiller as high as it will go. Be careful when you work under raised tiller.
  3. Move PTO switch to “OFF” position to stop tiller.
  4. Stop engine. Remove key.

How to transport the tiller and tractor on a trailer?

  1. Drive tractor and tiller onto heavy-duty trailer.
  2. Lower tiller to trailer deck.
  3. Stop engine.
  4. Lock park brake.
  5. Fasten tractor and tiller to deck with straps, chains, or cables. Direct straps down and out from tractor and tiller.
  6. Be sure the trailer has all the necessary lights and signs required by local, state, provincial, or federal laws.
