How do I assemble the HAKKO 373?

Before assembly, ensure the selected guide pipe assembly or tube unit matches the soldering iron and solder diameter to be used.

Assembly Steps:

1. Install the Solder Dia. Adjustment Ring: Remove the tension gear guide shaft. Attach the solder dia. adjustment ring that corresponds to your solder diameter, then re-attach the tension gear guide shaft.

2. Connect the Feed Nozzle: Insert the feed nozzle into the feed unit on top of the station and tighten the set screw. Do not overtighten, as this may crack the tube.

3. Connect the Mini Plug: Insert the mini plug into the jack on the front of the station.

CAUTION:

• Setup should be done while the soldering iron is cool to avoid burns.

• Do not force the guide pipe to bend or turn, as this may result in damage.

• Do not operate with the tube bent or held at a sharp angle, as this may cause clogging.

How do I attach a top-feed type Guide Pipe Assembly or Tube Unit to the HAKKO 373?

Attaching the Guide Pipe Assembly (for FX-8801, FX-8805):

Attach the guide pipe assembly between the nipple (or nut) and handle, and secure it.

Attaching the Tube Unit (for FX-8801, FX-8805):

Attach the attachment and guide pipe by securing it with the guide pipe locking nut, joint, and clips.

General Attachment Procedure:

1. Attach the Tube to the Guide Pipe Assembly: The tube has a double structure. Insert the inside tube into the joint. Then, pass the outer tube over the outside of the joint so it covers the threaded portion. Do not bend the tube.

2. Attach the Attachment to the Soldering Iron:

a. Decide which side of the attachment (left or right) you will pass the tube through.

b. Position the attachment so the tube connects to the guide pipe as straight as possible.

c. Secure the attachment with the handle and the adhesive tape on the rear of the attachment.

How do I set the solder in the HAKKO 373?

If there is any solder already in the tube, remove it before installing new solder.

(a) Pass the solder bobbin shaft through the solder bobbin and attach the shaft to the rear of the station. The shaft should be attached so that the solder is fed from the top of the bobbin.

(b) Pass the solder through the supply nozzle.

(c) While pressing the release lever, insert approximately 10 mm (0.4 in.) of solder into the feed nozzle, passing it between the tension gears.

(d) Turn the power switch ON and set the mode to MANUAL.

(e) Press the feed switch (or footswitch) to feed the solder.

How do I change the solder diameter on the HAKKO 373?

The following parts may need to be changed to accommodate a different solder diameter or soldering iron: Solder dia. adjustment ring, Nozzle, Guide pipe assembly, and Tube unit.

Procedure:

(a) Turn the power switch off. Open the release lever and roll the solder back to the bobbin.

(b) Remove the tension gear guide shaft. Replace the solder dia. adjustment ring with the one corresponding to the new solder diameter. You may need a spanner or pliers to turn and remove the tension gear guide shaft.

(c) Replace the guide pipe assembly if it is necessary for the new solder diameter.

Can the HAKKO 373 be mounted vertically?

Yes, the HAKKO 373 can be mounted vertically. Use two screws (2-ø4.2) spaced 46mm apart for mounting.

What are the operating modes of the HAKKO 373?

Solder is fed by pressing the feed switch or footswitch. There are two modes:

AUTO MODE: If you press the feed switch, solder will be fed for a set time and at a set speed, regardless of how long you press the switch.

MANUAL MODE: Solder will be fed at a set speed for as long as you are pressing the feed switch.

How do I adjust the nozzle position on the HAKKO 373?

If there is solder in the guide pipe, pull it out before adjusting the nozzle position.

(a) Loosen the pipe securing nut, turn the guide pipe to adjust the nozzle’s position, and then tighten the loosened pipe securing nut.

CAUTION: Do not overtighten the pipe securing nut, as the guide pipe can break. This adjustment must be done while the iron tip is cold to avoid suffering burns.

How do I set the feed time and feed speed on the HAKKO 373?

You should set the speed before setting the time. The speed setting is effective in both AUTO and MANUAL modes. The time setting is only effective in AUTO mode.

How do I adjust the tension on the HAKKO 373?

When adjusting the tension, ensure the gear does not slip during solder feeding. Do not force the solder to feed if the gear is slipping due to a solder clog.

Set the tension gear loosely for fine solder (ø0.6mm, ø0.8mm). Refer to the following chart for the maximum length (ℓ) of the tension spring:

Solder Dia. ø0.6mm ø1.0mm ø1.6mm
maximum 14mm 10mm

How do I adjust the amount of solder return on the HAKKO 373?

After solder is fed, a specified length of solder can be returned. This solder return function may be needed for soldering robots. The amount of solder return is adjustable within 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.2 in.).

Set the amount of solder return to be as small as possible. If the tip of the returning solder reaches the nozzle, flux can easily accumulate on it. Avoid setting the return amount to a value that causes this condition.

To adjust the return amount, insert a driver into the adjustment hole on the side of the station. Turn the driver left for a smaller return amount or turn it right for a bigger amount.

What should I check if the solder is not feeding smoothly on my HAKKO 373?

If the solder cannot be fed smoothly, please check the following points:

• Are you using the proper parts according to the diameter of the solder?

• Did you adjust the tension properly?

• Is the tube bent or transformed?

• Is solder adhered at the feed gear or the tension gear?

• Is the nozzle clogged with flux?

• Is the mini-plug correctly connected?

• Is the fuse blown?

• Is the power cord correctly connected?

What are the handling precautions for ESD Safe products like the HAKKO 373?

This product contains electrostatic countermeasures. Please use the following precautions:

1. Not all plastic parts are insulators; they may be conductive. Be careful not to expose live electrical parts or damage insulating materials when performing repairs or replacing parts.

2. Be sure the product is grounded before use.
