Please observe the following important safety warnings when using your HAIER BD-478A:

• WARNING: Keep ventilation openings, in the appliance enclosure or in the built-in structure, clear of obstruction.

• WARNING: Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

• WARNING: Do not damage the refrigerant circuit.

• WARNING: Do not use electrical appliances inside the food storage compartment of the appliance, unless they are of the type recommended by the manufacturer.

• Appliance Disposal: If you are replacing an old appliance, it is essential to destroy any existing latch or bolt locks before you put it aside to prevent playing children from locking themselves in.

• Power Cable: If the power cable is damaged, an approved cable provided by a manufacturer or a service agent must be used for replacement.

• Refrigerant: The refrigerant is easily inflammable. The refrigerant circuit is hermetically sealed. An improper intervention can cause an acute fire hazard. Do not create any mechanical influence on the cooling system. Interventions on the cooling system must be carried out by professional and authorized personnel only.

For proper installation of your HAIER BD-478A, follow these guidelines:

• Location: Place your appliance in a cool, well-aired, dry room. Strictly avoid high ambient temperatures and direct sunlight.

• Heat Sources: Installation near a heat source (like a heater or oven) is highly inappropriate. If installation near a heat source cannot be avoided, a suitable insulation plate must be fitted between the appliance and the heat source (do not use asbestos), and the following minimum distances must be observed:

– From a gas or electric cooker: 3 cm

– From a radiator or oven: 5 cm

– From a wall, piece of furniture, or another appliance: 2 cm

• Ventilation: Never obstruct the ventilation grille. If your model has a ventilation grille (F), it can be placed directly against a wall, but not with the side protected by the ventilation grille. For freezers without a ventilation grille, leave sufficient space between the rear of the appliance and the wall to allow warm air to escape.

• Leveling: The appliance must be placed horizontally and on a leveled base to ensure an unimpeded circuit of the refrigerant and optimum function.

Before you start using your HAIER BD-478A, please follow these steps:

1. After placing the appliance in its final position, leave it to stand for at least 2 hours before switching it on. This allows the refrigerant circuit to stabilize and prevents operating problems.

2. Thoroughly clean the interior compartment with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar to remove the typical odor of a new appliance.

3. Do not use washing liquids, sharp or granular cleaning implements, or any cleaning products containing soda.

4. Make sure the inner area, especially the corners, is absolutely dry before connecting the appliance to power.

Your HAIER BD-478A must be connected to a power socket with a grounded connection, which conforms to the respective standards and has been installed by an authorized specialist.

Before you plug the appliance into the power socket, make absolutely sure that the voltage (V) on the appliance’s data-plate corresponds with that of your mains supply. If the voltage differs, do not connect the appliance to the mains.

The rating plate, which contains all technical data for your HAIER BD-478A, is located on the housing (D) at the rear of the appliance. It is recommended to copy the technical data from the rating plate to a convenient location so it is readily available without having to move the appliance.

The temperature control (thermostat) on your HAIER BD-478A switches the appliance on and off and sets the cooling temperature. The control is intentionally resistant to turning to prevent accidental changes. To adjust the setting, it is recommended to use a coin or a screwdriver.

The temperature control is adjustable between:

• Min. / minimum number: for slight cooling.

• Max. / maximum number: for the lowest temperature.

The compressor will stop when the control panel marking is on the “0” or “OFF” position (not all models have this function). We recommend a medium setting for general use.

The indicator lights on your HAIER BD-478A provide information about its operational status:

• Green Light (CONTROL): This indicates that the appliance is connected to the power supply and is operating. The green control light must always be on when the appliance is switched on.

• Red Light (ALARM): This indicates that the interior temperature is too high. It is normal for this light to come on during the first start-up, after defrosting, or when filling the freezer with fresh food. It should go off automatically when the interior temperature reaches approximately -15°C. If the red light stays on for more than 12 to 24 hours, there may be a serious problem.

• Yellow Light (SUPER FREEZE): This indicates that the SUPER FREEZE switch is on. When this function is activated, the thermostat function is disabled, and the compressor cools continuously. This is used for freezing fresh food quickly.

If your HAIER BD-478A is supplied with a buzzer, it will sound an acoustic alarm when the red indicator light (ALARM) goes on, signaling that the internal temperature is too high. The buzzer is silenced automatically when you turn on the SUPER FREEZER SWITCH.

Follow these steps for the initial start-up of your HAIER BD-478A:

1. Fully unpack the appliance.

2. Remove the polystyrene parts in the compressor chamber (if supplied).

3. Remove documents and any accessories from the inside of the appliance.

4. Clean the interior with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar, and dry thoroughly with a cloth.

5. Close the appliance.

6. Insert the plug into the socket.

7. Switch on the appliance by turning the temperature control to the right. For the time being, turn the controller fully to the right to the Max position (the green and red lights will go on).

8. If equipped with a SUPER FREEZE SWITCH, turn it on (the yellow light will also go on).

9. Do not open the appliance for about 4 hours, or for as long as the red light is on, to allow the temperature to drop to the necessary level.

10. You can now fill the appliance with any amount of deep-frozen food (purchased ready-frozen goods).

11. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH again after 24 hours at the latest.

12. If you wish to freeze fresh, unfrozen food, proceed as per the instructions for “Freezing/storage of fresh food”.

To ensure the quality of frozen food in your HAIER BD-478A, follow these best practices:

• Packaging: Almost all fresh products are suitable for freezing. Use suitable packing material like transparent freezer bags. Pack fresh products in portions suitable for your household to prevent defrosting quantities that are too large for consumption in one day.

• Labeling: Label the fresh products clearly as they are not easy to identify when deep frozen. Use commercially available labels and include the following information:

– Product name (e.g., beef fillet)

– Weight of portion

– Quantity (total of pieces)

– Freezing date

– Use-by date (consumption date)

• Important Cautions:

– Do not store any bottles containing liquids, as liquid expands when frozen and the bottle can explode.

– Never keep containers with explosive substances (gas lighters, petrol, ether, etc.) in the freezer compartment.

– Eat deep-frozen ice cream and ice lollies only a few minutes after taking them from the freezer to avoid injury to lips and tongue.

– Avoid touching the inner walls with wet hands.

Follow this procedure to freeze fresh food in your HAIER BD-478A:

a) Place fresh foods in the pre-freezing compartment at the side (I) (if equipped) or on the bottom of the freezer, which is the coldest part. Avoid putting fresh foods in direct contact with already deep-frozen food.

b) Only fill quantities of fresh food suitable for the freezing capacity of your appliance within 24 hours. Refer to the rating plate for this information (XX kg/24h).

c) If available, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH. This is not absolutely necessary when filling with already frozen items.

d) After 24 hours, shift the newly deep-frozen goods from the freezer bottom or pre-freeze shelf to a hanging basket (K). This makes the bottom or shelf available for freezing more fresh food.

e) Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (the yellow light will go off).

f) Set the temperature control according to the filling capacity.

g) Keep the storage temperature at -18°C or colder. You can monitor this by placing a thermometer with a scale range of up to -26°C inside.

When refilling with more fresh food, make sure to do so at least 24 hours after the previous filling, and do not exceed the maximum freezing capacity.

To ensure correct storage of frozen food, never fill the storage shelf (E) up to the edge. Always allow space between the lid and the frozen foods.

To save energy when operating in normal ambient temperatures (+18°C to +22°C), set the temperature control according to the filling capacity as follows:

• Power: Whenever cleaning or defrosting, remove the power plug.

• Lid Opening: After closing the freezer lid, do not open it immediately or force it open. A vacuum is created, which will release after 1 or 2 minutes, allowing the lid to be opened normally.

• Condensation: To prevent condensation and ice forming, allow cooked food to cool down to ambient temperature before closing the container lid and storing it.

• Energy Saving: Leave the freezer lid open as briefly as possible to avoid wasting energy and to prevent an excessive amount of ice from forming.

• High Temperature Alarm: If the red indicator light goes on unexpectedly or stays on for a long period, do not open the lid and take appropriate measures immediately by consulting the troubleshooting guide.

• Ice Removal: Do not use a screwdriver or other metal objects to remove the layer of ice. The interior walls are very delicate. Use only plastic or wooden scrapers.

• Exterior: For the upkeep of the external appearance, occasionally clean with furniture polish or another enamel-protecting product. Never use it on the inside.

• Lid Seal: Clean the seal (B) now and again with warm water, without using any cleaning product.

• Condenser: If your appliance has a condenser (R) on the rear, from time to time remove dirt and dust. Dust and dirt impede the release of heat and increase energy consumption. Use a light brush or duster to remove dust from the condenser.

• Long-term Disuse: If you leave your appliance out of use for an extended period (e.g., on holidays), leave it open to prevent odors from building up. For appliances with locks, when the lid is open, set the lock to the “closed” position and keep the key away from small children.

• Frost Removal: Ice and frost layers that form on the inner walls act as an insulation element. They must be removed from time to time. Use a plastic or wood scraper without sharp edges.

Under normal conditions (3 to 4 openings per day), your HAIER BD-478A should be defrosted once or twice a year. Never use electrical appliances like hair dryers or devices with a naked flame (e.g., candles) to defrost.

Proceed as follows:

1. Provide a suitable non-metallic container (plastic container or wash-basket).

2. Make absolutely sure that you remove the plug from the power socket.

3. Dry your hands thoroughly to prevent skin damage from contact with ice (it is advisable to use gloves).

4. Remove all frozen food from the freezer, roll it firmly in newspaper, put it into the container, and place the container in a cool, dry room.

5. Cover the container all around with a thick blanket.

6. Lift the divider (H) (if equipped) upwards out of the guide rail of the freezer.

7. Use the divider (if provided) as a defrosting dish and push it on the side under the freezer where the defrosting water drain plug is located.

8. Pull the plug (if provided) out of the freezer bottom.

9. Scrape the thickest ice carefully from the freezer inside and put it into the kitchen sink for defrosting.

10. If necessary, speed up defrosting by placing a large pot of warm (not too hot) water on the freezer bottom.

11. In freezers not provided with a drain plug, continuously wipe up the water with a sponge.

12. Thoroughly clean the inside compartment. Rinse it with a mixture of warm water and vinegar, then rinse with clear water.

13. Wipe the freezer with an absorbent cloth thoroughly dry and allow it to air for about 3 to 4 minutes.

14. Replace the drain plug (if provided).

15. Empty the dry defrosting water dish (if provided) and slide it back as a divider into the guide rails.

16. Close the chest and plug it back into the socket.

17. Set the temperature control to the maximum setting (green and red lamps go on) and switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) (yellow lamp lights additionally).

18. Now refill the frozen food, placing the oldest items at the top. Carry out steps 1 to 17 within a maximum of two hours to prevent food from defrosting.

19. When the red lamp goes off, reset the temperature control to a setting suitable for the filling capacity and storage temperature.

20. Switch off the SUPER FREEZER SWITCH (if provided) after about 8 to 12 hours, or at the latest after 24 hours (the yellow light will go off).

If your HAIER BD-478A is equipped with lighting, a switch is built in that turns the light on automatically when the appliance is opened and off when closed. The lamp is protected with a transparent cover. When replacing the bulb, strictly use a 15 W max. replacement bulb.

The compressor (motor) in your HAIER BD-478A does not operate continuously. It is controlled by the thermostat and switches on and off automatically. It is normal to hear noise when the compressor is switched on. This noise is produced by the motor operating and by the refrigerant flowing in the cooling system circuit. These noises are normal and do not indicate any functional trouble.

Additionally, in unheated rooms and in cold weather, condensation can build up on the outer walls of the appliance. This does not mean there is a problem and will disappear when the weather becomes warmer.

If your HAIER BD-478A has no function (is not running), first note that in the event of a power failure, the insulation of the appliance walls provides 10 to 12 hours of storage time for frozen food. If it takes longer to eliminate a problem, the food will begin to defrost. Take prompt action to eliminate the problem and, if necessary, shift frozen food into another freezer.

If you are experiencing cooling issues with your HAIER BD-478A, check the following possible causes and remedies:

• Recent Installation: Did you let the appliance stand for at least 2 hours before switching it on to allow the refrigerant circuit to stabilize? If not, unplug it, close the lid, lift it for a moment, and put it back down. Plug it in after 2 hours and do not open it for another 12 hours, or until the red light goes off.

• Power Connection: Is the plug in good condition and properly plugged into the socket? Is the socket receiving power? (Test it by connecting a small appliance like a hand-mixer).

• Lid Seal: Does the lid of the appliance close properly? Does the seal press firmly? To test, place a piece of writing paper between the seal and the edge of the chest and close the lid. It should be difficult to pull the paper out from any side. If you can pull the paper out without resistance from one or more sides, the seal may be faulty.

• Ice Buildup: Is there heavy ice formation on the inner walls? Excessive ice acts as insulation and reduces cooling efficiency. Defrost the appliance.

• Location and Heat Exposure: Is the appliance exposed to direct sunlight or installed near a heat source (oven, radiator, etc.)? Protect the appliance from direct sunlight and check its distance from heat sources.

• Food Load: Did you fill the freezer with too much food at once, exceeding its freezing capacity (see rating plate: XXkg/24h)? Or did you fill it with warm food?

The following table provides approximate storage times for various foods when frozen in your HAIER BD-478A. For purchased deep-frozen products, always observe the producer’s instructions on the packaging.
