The DEFY DHG902 hob consists of the following main components as shown in the overview diagram:

1. Control panel

2. Vitroceramic glass

3. Pan supports

The control panel includes knobs for:

1. Cooking Plate Front left

2. Cooking Plate Rear left

3. Wok Burner

4. Rapid Burner

5. Semi-Rapid Burner

Please follow these general safety instructions when using your DEFY DHG902 hob:

• This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction.

• Connect the appliance to an earthed outlet/line protected by a suitable fuse. Have the earth installation made by a qualified electrician.

• If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similar qualified persons.

• Do not operate the appliance if it is defective or has any visible damage.

• Do not carry out any repairs or modifications on the appliance.

• Never wash down the appliance with water! There is a risk of electric shock.

• Never use the appliance when your judgment or coordination is impaired by alcohol and/or drugs.

• The appliance must be disconnected from the mains during installation, maintenance, cleaning and repair procedures.

• Be careful when using alcoholic drinks in your dishes. Alcohol evaporates at high temperatures and may cause a fire.

• Do not use the appliance for heating closed tins and glass jars, as the pressure build-up may cause them to burst.

• Keep all ventilation slots clear of obstructions.

• Do not place any flammable materials close to the appliance as the sides may become hot during use.

• The appliance may be hot when in use. Never touch the hot burner, inner sections of the oven, heaters etc.

• Make sure that the function knobs are switched off after every use.

• When using Gas, ensure that the room is well ventilated.

• Only use the appliance for preparing food. Use a deep pan, large enough to cover the appropriate burner or hotplate.

• Always dry food thoroughly before placing it in hot oil or fat. Frozen food will spit and splatter if added too quickly.

• Never fill a pan more than one third full of fat or oil.

• Never heat fat or fry with a lid on the pan.

• Do not fry too much food at once. This lowers the temperature of the oil or fat.

• Do not leave hot fat or oil unattended. If overheating occurs, these could catch fire.

• Do not use or store inflammable products near the hob.

• WARNING: If the surface is cracked, switch off the appliance to avoid the possibility of electric shock.

• The hot surface indicator light will activate to alert you when the glass surface has reached a temperature that may cause injury. The light will switch off when the surface has reached a safe temperature.

• Electrical and/or gas appliances are dangerous to children. Keep children away from the appliance when it is operating and do not allow them to play with it.

• Accessible parts of the hob will become hot whilst the appliance is in use. Children should be kept away until the appliance has cooled down.

• Do not place any items above the appliance that children may reach for.

• The packaging materials will be dangerous for children. Keep the packaging materials away from children and dispose of them in a responsible manner.

• Any work carried out on gas equipment and systems may only be done by authorised qualified persons who are registered LP Gas installers.

• Prior to installation, ensure that local distribution conditions (nature of the gas and gas pressure) and the appliance adjustment are compatible.

• This appliance shall be installed and connected in accordance with current installation regulations, with particular attention to ventilation requirements.

• CAUTION: The use of gas cooking appliances produces heat and moisture. Ensure the kitchen is well ventilated: keep natural ventilation holes open or install a mechanical ventilation device (extractor hood).

• Gas appliances and systems must be regularly checked for proper functioning. The regulator, hose and its clamp must be checked regularly and replaced within recommended periods or when necessary.

• Clean the gas burner regularly. The flames should be blue and burn evenly.

• Good combustion is required. In case of incomplete combustion, carbon monoxide (CO), a colourless, odourless, and very toxic gas, might develop.

In the event of a pan fire on your DEFY DHG902, follow these steps:

• Switch off the Gas supply.

• Smother the flames with a blanket or damp cloth.

• Do NOT use water to extinguish an oil or fat fire.

• Be aware that burns and injuries are usually caused by picking up the burning pan and rushing outside with it.

If you smell gas, take the following actions immediately:

• Turn off all valves on gas appliances and the gas meter at the main control valve, unless it’s in a confined space or cellar.

• Extinguish all naked flames.

• Do not operate any electrical appliances.

• Ventilate the area. Open doors and windows.

• Check for leaks. Check all tubes and connections for tightness.

• If the odour persists, contact your nearest Defy Service Centre for assistance.

• If you still smell gas, leave the property.

• Warn the neighbors.

• Call the fire-brigade. Use a telephone outside the house.

• If you have doors or gates secured by an electric lock or entry phone, please open them manually.

• Do not re-enter the property until you are told it is safe to do so.

‘Burn back’ is when the flame burns back into the jet. If this occurs on your DEFY DHG902, follow these steps:

• Immediately turn off the control to the affected burner.

• Wait a few minutes and relight the burner in the normal manner.

• If the burn back occurs again, turn off the control knob to the affected burner and consult the nearest Defy service technician for advice.

Good room ventilation is essential for the safe operation of your DEFY DHG902. All rooms require a window that can be opened, or equivalent, and some rooms will require a permanent vent in addition. If there is no window or door available for room ventilation, extra ventilation must be installed.

The ventilation opening requirements depend on the room size:

To use your DEFY DHG902 in an ecological way and save energy, follow these tips:

• Defrost frozen dishes before cooking them.

• Use pots/pans with a cover for cooking. If there is no cover, energy consumption may increase up to 4 times.

• Select the burner which is most suitable for the bottom size of the pot to be used. Always select the correct pot size for your dishes. Larger pots require more energy.

• Your DEFY DHG902 is equipped with Precise flame which gives 9 specifically defined power levels. This allows for the flame size and heat to be adjusted with ease and reliability, giving better defined and more controlled cooking results.

Before initial use, clean your DEFY DHG902 as follows:

1. Remove all packaging materials.

2. Wipe the surfaces of the appliance with a damp cloth or sponge and dry with a cloth.

Caution: The surface may get damaged by some detergents or cleaning materials. Do not use aggressive detergents, cleaning powder/cream or any sharp objects.

Follow these general guidelines for the best cooking experience with your DEFY DHG902 hob:

• Before frying foods, always dry them well and gently place into the hot oil. Ensure complete thawing of frozen foods before frying.

• Do not cover the pot or pan you use when heating oil.

• Place the pans and saucepans in a manner so that their handles are not over the hob to prevent heating of the handles.

• Do not place unbalanced and easily tilting cooking vessels on the hob.

• Do not place empty pots and saucepans on cooking zones that are switched on. They might get damaged.

• Operating a cooking zone without a pot, pan or saucepan on it will cause damage to the appliance. Turn off the cooking zones after cooking is complete.

• As the surface of the appliance can be hot, do not place plastic and aluminum vessels on it.

• Use flat bottomed saucepans or cooking vessels only.

• Put only the appropriate amount of food in saucepans and pans to help prevent overflowing.

• Do not put covers of saucepans or pans on the cooking zones.

• Place saucepans so that they are centered on the cooking zone. When moving a saucepan, lift and place it onto the new cooking zone instead of sliding it.

The size of the cooking vessel and the flame must be suited to each other. Adjust the gas flames so that they do not extend past the bottom of the cooking vessel and ensure that the cooking vessel is centered on the saucepan carrier.

Use the following advised diameter of pots for each burner or plate:

To ignite the gas burners on your DEFY DHG902:

• Push the knob inwards and turn it counter-clockwise to ignite.

• After the gas ignites, keep the knob pressed for 3-5 seconds more to engage the safety system.

• If the gas does not ignite after you press and release the knob, repeat the same procedure by keeping the knob pressed in for 15 seconds.

The large flame symbol on the control knob indicates the highest cooking power, and the small flame symbol indicates the lowest cooking power. In the turned off (top) position, gas is not supplied to the burners.

DANGER: Do not press the knob for longer than 15 seconds if there was no ignition. Wait for one minute and then repeat the ignition process.

To turn off the gas burner, turn the corresponding knob to the off (upper) position.

Your DEFY DHG902 hob is equipped with a gas shut off safety system (thermic component). As a countermeasure against blow out due to fluid overflows at the burner, or should the flame extinguish for any reason, the flow of gas to the burner will be automatically terminated.

Follow these steps to correctly fit the burner cap on your DEFY DHG902:

• Carefully align the hole in the burner body with the flame failure sensor.

• Gently lower the burner body into position.

• Centralise and level the burner cap onto the burner body. The burner cap must be positioned so that it rests centrally on the burner body. Ensure that it is correctly seated.

• Refit the pot stands.

Important: Wrong centralizing of the burner cap may result in a flash back and cause the burner to melt and deform. After cleaning the burner cap, ensure the cap is properly located on the flame spreaders. These user faults are not covered by the warranty.

The hob control knobs are used for operating the electric plates. To obtain the desired cooking power, turn the hob control knobs to the corresponding level.

To turn off the ceramic plates, turn the plate knob to the OFF (upper) position.

The service life of your DEFY DHG902 will extend and problems will decrease if it is cleaned at regular intervals.

• DANGER: Switch off the electricity before cleaning the appliance to avoid an electric shock.

• DANGER: Hot surfaces may cause burns! Allow the appliance to cool down before you clean it.

• Clean the appliance thoroughly after each use to make it easier to remove cooking residues and prevent them from burning during the next use.

• Use warm water with washing liquid, a soft cloth or sponge to clean the product and wipe it with a dry cloth. No special cleaning agents are required.

• Always ensure any excess liquid is thoroughly wiped off after cleaning and any spillage is immediately wiped dry.

• Do not use cleaning agents that contain acid or chloride to clean the stainless or inox surfaces and the handle. Use a soft cloth with a liquid detergent (not abrasive) to wipe those parts clean, paying attention to sweep in one direction.

To clean the gas hob components of your DEFY DHG902:

1. Remove and clean the saucepan carrier and burner cap.

2. Clean the hob.

3. Install the burner cap and make sure that it is seated correctly.

4. When installing the upper grill, pay attention to place the saucepan carrier so that the burner is centered.

Wipe the glass ceramic surface using a piece of cloth dampened with cold water in a manner as not to leave any cleaning agent on it. Dry with a soft and dry cloth. Residues may cause damage on the glass ceramic surface when using the hob for the next time. Dried residues on the glass ceramic surface should under no circumstances be scraped with hook blades, steel wool or similar tools. Remove calcium stains (yellow stains) by a small amount of lime remover such as vinegar or lemon juice. You can also use suitable commercially available products. If the surface is heavily soiled, apply the cleaning agent on a sponge and wait until it is absorbed well. Then, clean the surface of the hob with a damp cloth.

Important: Sugar-based foods such as thick cream and syrup must be cleaned promptly without waiting for the surface to cool down. Otherwise, the glass ceramic surface may be damaged permanently.

Clean the control panel and knobs with a damp cloth and wipe them dry. Do not remove the control buttons/knobs to clean the control panel, as the control panel may get damaged.

Every six months, the gas jets on your DEFY DHG902 hob should be cleaned to ensure continued efficient and safe operation. This can be done using a Gas Jet Cleaning Kit. The kit includes a sliding T-bar (A), a socket (B), and a ‘Classic pin’ (C).

1. Fit the T-bar to the socket and remove the pot stand, burner cap and burner body.

2. Insert the socket into the central tube of the burner so that it locates over the brass gas jet at the bottom of the tube.

3. Gently loosen the brass gas jet by turning the socket in an anti-clockwise direction.

4. Carefully lift the socket and loosened brass gas jet from the central burner tube.

5. Insert the Classic pin into the central hole of the jet and slide it up and down until the jet is free of accumulated dirt.

6. Re-assemble in reverse order.

7. Clean all the burner jets in the manner described above.

If there is no gas to your DEFY DHG902, check the following:

• Main gas valve is closed: Open the gas valve.

• Gas pipe is bent: Ensure the gas pipe has been properly fitted.

If there is no ignition spark, it is likely due to no electrical current. You should check the fuses in the fuse box.

If a burner is not burning properly or not at all, check the following:

• Burner is dirty: Clean the burner components.

• Burner is wet: Dry the burner components.

• Burner cap is not fitted correctly: Mount the burner cap correctly.

• Gas valve is closed: Open the gas valve.

• Gas cylinder is empty (when using LPG): Replace the gas cylinder.

If a burner on your DEFY DHG902 will not light, perform these checks:

• The gas pipe is twisted, bent or kinked: Ensure the gas pipe has been properly fitted.

• The burner is dirty or wet: Clean / dry the burner components.

• The gas cylinder is empty: Replace the gas cylinder.

• The burner cap is not fitted correctly: Fit the burner cap correctly.

• The gas pressure regulator is closed: Check to see if the regulator is open.

• The lighting procedure has not been followed correctly: Follow the correct lighting procedure.

If the flame is yellow and staining your cookware, check the following:

• The burner is dirty or wet: Clean / dry the burner components.

• The gas is running out: Replace the gas cylinder.

• The burner cap is not fitted properly: Fit the burner cap properly.

• The gas pipe is twisted, bent or kinked: Ensure the gas pipe has been properly fitted.

If you smell leaking gas, please check these potential issues:

• Are all the control knobs in the off position?: Check to see the knobs are in the off position.

• The gas pipe is fitted incorrectly: Ensure the gas pipe has been properly fitted.

• The hose clamps require tightening or replacing: Have hose clamps tightened or replaced.

• The regulator is faulty and needs to be replaced: Have the regulator checked and replaced.
